Happy Birthday Omi Oct 8, 2022 We were up early .....the bed was as hard as the floor. Neither of us slept well, but we showered and out the door we went. Our Zimmer didn’t provide breakfast, we knew that and we’re off to find a bakery/café. The folks at the Zimmer told us Um de Ecke (around the corner). Well up the street we found the bakery. We each had a brochen and coffee. Back in the car, off we go toward Wangen. So, this trip was thrown together very quickly. Why you ask? Today is Hedy Hancock birthday. As everyone knows, our dearest Mutti, Omi passed recently. Maria, James, Eva and Swen decided weeks ago to meet today (Hedy’s Birthday) at Maria’s house to spread Hedy and Bill’s ashes in Maria’s garden where Hedy ... read more

On The Road Again Oct 7, 2022 I woke up around 7:30 am Kirsten was finishing her shower and coming out of the bathroom. Hurry up sleepy boy we got a busy day ahead of us. YA, YA, YA, I stumble to the shower. Even the walk to the shower felt like it was uphill. When I’m done, Kirsten is packed and heading downstairs for breakfast. Better hurry or there will be no eggs left. I hustle and get dressed, out the door and heading toward the breakfast dining room, which happens to be a wine cellar. Weak to no WIFI or cell coverage. Kirsten has planned our day. We are leaving Brauneberg and heading toward Dornstetten. I have been assigned to find the most scenic route which includes the German Wine Strasse and the Black ... read more

Turf and surf Oct 6, 2022 Oh, my body aches, I literally rolled out of bed onto the floor and crawled to the bathroom. Yes, we’re feeling it this morning, after riding all those miles yesterday. Kirsten is ready to go downstairs for breakfast before me, I’m still trying to get my pants on. While at breakfast we decided to take a nice relaxing walk to village of Traben-Trarbach. The lady at the i told us to go up the Mosel to BernKastel and hike over the vineyards and take the boat taxi back down the Mosel. What could possibly go wrong! We arrived in BernKastel, parked the car, and found the trail. It was well marked like all trails in Germany. The problem was, It was straight up as in 90 degrees straight up. Kirsten ... read more

Good morning, I had my first German breakfast it’s been a long time, brochen, meats, cheeses and a 4 min egg. Did I forget.... German coffee! For our first couple of nights, Kirsten and I decided to stay in the Mosel River valley. It has Bike trails on both sides of the river along with hiking trails. We have always wanted to bicycle along any of Germany’s rivers. So as we were flying across the Atlantic, Kirsten decided that we were going to do it. At breakfast, Kirsten found that the i located in Brauneberg. Americans know it as the Chamber of Commerce. Basically, it’s where you get all the info you want about the village, you’re staying in. Yes! we rented eBikes for the day and off we go toward Trier. We first came into ... read more

WOW!!!! I can’t believe it .... We’re leaving on a jet plane....... This is our FIRST! Trip we have taken in three years. Yep... Three years.... Ok, we’ve gone to the beach and to Pine Mountain for Thanksgiving. But we haven’t gotten on a jet plane in a long time. Hurricane Ian has come and gone, we didn’t lose power nor did any of our houses have major damage; mostly cleanup and Ernie had that under control. Mandy drove us to Orlando airport very early Monday morning, thank you Mandy. I have been monitoring the counts and created a spread sheet with a formula to help pick the best airport to fly out of and get into Frankfurt Germany. The decision was to fly out of DTW (Detroit). We got on the first flight to Detroit ... read more

Christmas Market Day 4.... & coming home It’s St Nickolas Day...... It was the night before St Nickolas day and all through the Zimmer, not a creature was stirring, not even Kisty. You get my point.... I wake up to a squeal from Lori’s room, I’m thinking, someone has come in and got her, so I immediately lock my door. Sorry Lori, Yes, I finally came out and everyone is safe. St Nickolas came last night; gifts were hanging from our doors and our breakfast area was totally set with an AWESOME German breakfast. We all sit down to breakfast asking each other did you do it? No, I didn’t, did you? It was a wonderful breakfast. YEAH! I Believe, I Believe...... However, today is also a sad day, all things must come to an end. ... read more

Christmas Market Day 3.... It’s St Nickolas eve It’s 8 am and the covers have just been pulled off of me, good thing I was in my toasty PJ’s. Kirsten says get up Tinker Bell, we have a full schedule today. I roll out of bed clinging to any warmth within reach. Kirsten smiles and says You know what today is? Before I can even think of an answer, she squeals it’s St Nicolaus Day eve! Ok, for all you NON-Germans, this is a big day, mark your calendar for next year. Again, as I float from my room pulled to the kitchen by the aroma of German coffee all the way to another awesome German breakfast. Everyone is sitting around the table very excited if not more than yesterday. Yes, it’s hard to believe but ... read more

Christmas Market Day 2.... WOW, I wake up to someone rubbing my foot, it’s Kirsten. She smiles and says good morning sleepy head. I rollout of bed and get ready for another day of chasing after St Nicolaus. As I walk from my room to the kitchen, the aroma of German coffee is leading me all the way to an awesome German breakfast. Everyone is sitting around the table talking about yesterday and where we’re going and what we’re doing today. Me... I’m smiling knowing all I need to do is get my navigational orders keyed it into the MAPS and operate the Apple Car app. And you thought I was important, LOL. Today we will be visiting two Christmas Markets. The first one is Bamberg, our second is Nuremburg. Lots of driving today, however the ... read more

I wake up around 1 AM, Kirsten is still sleeping; well I think she is. After an hour of trying to fall back asleep I get up and hang out in the kitchen and do some paperwork. Around 3 AM I’m starting to get tired and head back to bed. Around 8 AM I wake up and Kirsten is already up and dressed, get up sleepy head we have a busy day ahead of us looking for St Nick. Ok, Ok, I roll out of bed at the very moment my feet hit the ice-covered floor, I let out a squeal and fall back into the bed retreating to the warmth of my covers. Yes, its freezing over here and yep, I’m awake now. Kirsten walks out of our room shaking her head saying, “such a ... read more

It’s 6 am and Kirsten is up and showering, I’m next. We have just got home last night from Thanksgiving at Pine Mountain like we do every year. And we are already loading the car for Christmas Market, yes.. you read it correctly. We have planned to join Lori and Sam in Germany this year and enjoy Christmas Market with them. Lori and Sam left Thanksgiving Day and flew to Dusseldorf. They have a head start on us but were all meeting at the house Kirsten rented, close to Fulda. We packed our Thanksgiving suitcases along with our Germany suitcases before going to Pine Mountain so to make it easier to get out the door this morning. So, the adventure begins.... The car is loaded, and we are pulling out of the condo, I don’t think ... read more
