July 25, 2023 – Cinderella Castle It’s Tuesday morning and its raining. After breakfast we loaded the car and off, we go. Today we are heading to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. On the way we plan on stopping to see the Cinderella Castel, Neuschwanstein Castle. This is the true castle that Disney’s castle was modeled after. It rained all day off and on, we arrived at the Cinderella Castle and started up the mountain. But we were rained out so we turned around and took pictures for a distance. We arrived in Garmisch and found our house Kirsten rented for us and brought all our stuff in. It’s still raining so we ducked into this Italian restaurant for dinner. Once back at the house we were all tired and wet and it was 10 pm. Yea! This was a ... read more

July 23, 2023 – Eagles Nest I wake up the morning sun light is reflecting off the mountain into our room. I feel this gentle touch nudging me. Wake up we are leaving in an hour with or without you, wow is that my loving wife speaking to me? YES! Ok, I hear you without even having my hearing aids in. WOW! talk about an alarm clock. I’m up showered and dressed in under 30 minutes. I get to the breakfast table and Caroline is just now getting up. What’s up with this? At breakfast Kirsten reviews today’s agenda. It’s as tight and regimented as yesterdays, not that I’m complaining. First, we are visiting the Eagles Nest our tickets are for 10:30 AM. NOT, 10 AM and NOT 11 AM but 10:30 AM. July 22, 2023 – Exploring Berchtesgaden I wake up fresh and roll over, Kirsten is gone. Are you shocked she has already walked to the bakery and returned with breakfast bread. I’m thinking she might be an honorary member of the Elf community. They are still warm from the oven; I can smell them as I’m walking into the kitchen. Kirsten and Bea make us another perfect German breakfast. Bread, meats, cheeses, coffee, and cutup vegetables and most important soft-boiled eggs. A German breakfast isn’t complete without soft-boiled eggs. At breakfast, Kirsten reviews with us today’s agenda, broken down by the hour. Yea, when in Germany everything must be planned and scheduled to the last degree. Ja Vol! First, we are walking through the Klamm, WHAT’S a Klamm you ask? It’s a German gorge but BIGGER. ... read more

July 21, 2023 – Going to Berchtesgaden We’re up.... well, that could be debated. Our breakfast bread is waiting for us beside the door. Another perfect German breakfast is on the table and I’m thinking the elves were here, you know I could get used to these elf’s taking care of me. After breakfast and everyone is showered and dressed. We load the car and were off to Berchtesgaden. You know... where Adolf partied with Eva Brun at the Eagles Nest. Today is going to be a long drive day. But first, we stop at Nuernberg and walk around and check out all the sights and have lunch. After leaving Nurnberg, we drive thru fields upon fields of HOPS! We thought of our hometown brewery Grove Roots. Finally, after multiple bathroom stops, we arrive in Berchtesgaden, ... read more

July 20, 2023 – Vondering the Fulda Gap We wake up our breakfast bread is waiting for us beside our door. I think the bakery elf’s deliver the breakfast each morning. Just saying.... After breakfast and everyone has showered and dressed were off to meet up with Eberhart and tour the areas around Fulda. First, we arrive at the Wasserkuppa mountain where the gliders take off. We walk the paths up to the top. It’s very windy, no wonder they fly the gliders here. Opa was stationed here in 56-58. Ask Kirsten, Bea or Mandy about his time in Germany, there are GREAT stories. This is the highest mountain in the area and there is a weather station on top. Caroline and I ride the Rodel bahn.... it’s like a sled on rails it fast and ... read more

July 19, 2023 – Vondering through Fulda We wake up our breakfast bread is waiting for us beside the door. Oh, I forgot to mention the landlady takes our breakfast bread order each evening and by 7am, it is outside our door. That’s what I call service. Kirsten and Bea prepare us the perfect German breakfast. Bread, meats, soft boiled eggs and cheese. After breakfast and everyone is showered and dressed were off to see Omi’s hometown where Opa met Omi while stationed in the military. Just a quick note, Bea was born in Fulda. Another great story to ask her about. We toured thru the Fulda Dom, the village of Fulda was setting up for a concert in front of the cathedral which took away from the beauty of the outside of the cathedral. But ... read more

July 18, 2023 – Time to say goodbye. We all wake up and have a wonderful breakfast with Swen, Eva, Mark, Savannah, Bea, Caroline, Kirsten, and me. Wow! what a table full of folks, it was great listening to all the German and English and Germglish being spoken. I just sat and smiled and nodded yes when I was asked a question. I have no idea what I agreed to. I probability sold my soul. That’s ok, its only when they come to collect that you need to worry. Around 10 am, we begin the goodbyes, hugs, and kisses. Mark and Savannah are off to visit Maria and James in Wangen. We’re heading to Fulda; Kirsten has a house rented just outside of Fulda. Big thanks to Eva and Swen!! They took all of us in ... read more

July 17, 2023 – Mark and Savannah arrive I wake up early, I know you are shocked. I arrive downstairs and a wonderful breakfast welcomes me provided by Swen and Eva. Yes, Kirsten and Bea are already having their breakfast. But I did beat Caroline. Ok, today Mark and Savannah are arriving around 12 pm from Düsseldorf by the end of breakfast that has now grown to 1 pm. I always thought those German trains were so punctual….I guess not. We discuss what to do this afternoon and we all decide to rent e-bikes and ride through the vineyards close to Karlsruhe. Done! Kirsten has reserved six e-bikes and we are to pick them up around 1:30 pm. Now we just must wait on Mark and Savannah. Swen picks up Mark and Savannah from the train ... read more

July 16, 2023 – Caroline Welcome to France It’s Sunday, everyone is sleeping in except Kirsten. I roll over, it’s quiet and dark, maybe no one is missing me. I close my eyes and drift off. Not for long, Kirsten is gently shaking me. Wake up sleepy head breakfast is ready, and you are late as usual. Ugh! I rollout of bed, dress and trip down the stairs. Everyone is at the table all awake and ready to go except me. Eva has prepared a fabulous breakfast. I chow down and was making my sneak away sandwich and Kirsten leans over and reminds me we don’t have to sneak around family. Oh Yea, I forgot. Breakfast is over and we are all outside and loaded into the cars. We’re off to Strasbourg, as in France. We ... read more
