Dinner in the Vineyard.... Kirsten nudges me gently, not tonight honey I’m tired. Wake up its time to take Bea to the airport. Bea who? It’s 4:30 am and I’m using toothpicks under my eye lids to keep them open. Kirsten and I are driving Bea to the airport, remember she’s catching a flight today to Amsterdam to meet up with the Jarrett’s. I load Bea’s suitcase into the car and enter our destination into the Navi. It’s a 30-minute drive, Kirsten, Bea and I are off to the airport. I fell asleep last night thinking what is Bea’s plan “B”. I’m not asking, I look at Kirsten and she reads my mind. I get the “shut up” look, I return the “What” look, she returns the “If I have to” look. I sink into my ... read more

It’s 7:30 ...I rollover, Kirsten is already up. I pull the covers over my head and hope no one finds me. It’s 8 am and I finally get up and stumble into the kitchen. Breakfast is on the patio table Kirsten, Bea and Omi are all buzzing around the kitchen like bee’s. I slide through the kitchen and grab a cup of coffee and sit down at the table. I don’t believe I was even noticed. I guess I have my stealth mode on. Kirsten comes out to the table, I look up and she looks at me and says, here is your list of chores. My chores include feeding the mule, the sheep, taking out the trash, helping Bea with the vacuum and bringing all my laundry to her to be washed and finally put ... read more

We’ve got the breakfast routine down pat. We have what I would call the perfect German breakfast. Cheeses, meats, bread, coffee and yes, soft-boiled eggs. Today’s agenda ... Chateaus. Bea requested seeing some Chateau’s before leaving us to be with the Jarrett’s. So last night after dinner, Kirsten put together an agenda that included three chateaus. We all pile in the car and make our way to Angers. I’ve got the Navi loaded. I have Google Maps loaded and I have Apple Maps as my backup. I’m barking instructions along with Helga (our Navi) telling Kirsten when and where to turn. Yes, I have made the transition to the digital maps. Now, if I can get Kirsten to listen to me. We pull into Angers and Helga puts us right into the center of town. The ... read more

Breakfast is being served sleepy head. Kirsten wakes me up from a deep sleep, I stumble out of the bed with my hair going in all directions. I pull myself together and come out to the patio where Kirsten, Bea and Omi are having breakfast and are busy talking back and forth, planning their shopping list for the grocery store. I haven’t even finished my first cup of coffee and they are in the car and gone. It’s quiet here, I love it. I sip on my coffee and enjoy the peace and quiet. Well, that all ended after an hour or so. Kirsten requested that I not add it to the blog, but it involves, the rental car, concrete and a tow truck. Everyone is ok, the rental car is ok. All is good, however ... read more

Everyone had a great night sleep, we’re all up and sitting around the patio table enjoying breakfast and listening to Kirsten give us todays agenda. She has today outlined, including bathroom breaks. We’re all loaded in the car and ready to go. Stop, I need to go to the bathroom, Sorry. Ok, now that I’m back into the car we’re off and heading to our first stop. Vertou, is having a market day, so we are stopping here first and getting some items for picnic lunch. We arrive quickly and are walking and enjoying the market. Me, I’m looking for the chicken man. The market is surrounding the cathedral. Mass is going on inside, I slip in and listen to the music and readings. It’s meditating and after 15 minutes, I wander back outside looking for ... read more

Well, our first night started off with a challenge. I couldn’t figure out how to lock the doors. You would think as landlord I could solve this. Nope, an hour later and with Kirsten’s help we did it. Actually, Kirsten solved the mystery. I now know how to lock French doors. Another restful night, I wake up before anyone else and slip out into the kitchen. I fix myself a cup of coffee, open the patio doors to a bright and comfortable 70-degree morning. WOW! This is vacationing, the birds are singing, my coffee is delicious. As I sit down and look out toward the field, I see Leonarda is staring at me, the donkey. I wonder what she’s thinking. Well, it doesn’t matter because I’m not feeding her, Kirsten will when she gets up. I ... read more

Again, another great night of sleep. Had I known this vacation would be this restful, I’d been here earlier. Kirsten and Omi are up showered and dressed before me. I’m moving as fast as I can through the bathroom knowing Kirsten has the car keys this morning. We are out of the hotel, loaded into the car and looking for a café for our first French breakfast. Kirsten finds a cute café close to the cathedral. We’re having coffee with croissants sitting on a bench in the cathedral courtyard listening to the bells. Once were done, we go into the cathedral for our blessings. Now this cathedral was built for one purpose. And you ask why did they built this cathedral? Because someone brought the head of John the Baptist back from the crusades. I can ... read more

It’s 8 am and I rollover for the first time, it’s pitch black and really, I don’t even know that it’s 8 am. I gently get out of bed so not to disturb Kirsten, I hear Kirsten say...not so fast there Mr. Stealthy. Woh, are you awake? Yep, we are leaving by 10 AM, you’d better be showered, fed, packed and loaded in the car or I’m leaving you like a bad habit. I’m thinking that sounds pretty strong coming from someone who doesn’t know where the car keys are........ I’m showered and down stairs having breakfast with Uli & Gudrun when Kirsten and Omi show up. No sooner than they sit down..... Claudia’s husband Tommy comes in. He just flew in from NYC and wanted to visit us before we left. We sat there for ... read more

I wake up after a great sleep, it’s up there with the top 3 best nights. They have these shutters; all European houses have these nifty shutters. They totally block out the sun. I mean it’s Mammoth Cave dark and if you don’t know what that means... then talk to someone from Kentucky. I wake up, Kirsten is still passed out. I get up and make all kinds of noise, she doesn’t move. I grab my stuff, PC, Hearing Aids, clothes .... you know, stuff. I drop half of it while trying to get through the door. Kirsten is still OUT! I go down stairs and check my emails and start blogging. In about an hour, Uli comes down and asked if I slept well. Yes, I did thank you. In the next hour, Kirsten and ... read more

I wake up after an OK night’s sleep, well as good as it can be flying 30 thousand feet over the pond. That’s Kentuckian for large body of water. We land and make it through customs, well Kirsten and Omi are, I truly think they like messing with me. I get the 3rddegree and by the time I make through Kirsten and Omi are discussing leaving me. Kirsten gives me the WHAT THE look and I just shrug and shake my head. We wind our way through the airport and pick up the car. Kirsten goes to the garage and gets the car; Omi and I decide to wait in the pick-up zone with the luggage. In less than 5 minutes, Kirsten comes up to a screeching stop in front of Omi and says .... Uber? ... read more
