South America » Colombia » Cartagena March 8th 2010

Cartagena, Colombia After holding our breath and getting through the gap over the ancient stone wall that was used to protect the harbour of Cartagena, we headed up past the skyline of the city of our first visit to South America. It was bloody exciting to be here and it seemed so strange to see the high rise apartment blocks and international hotels that we had not seen for months and months. We didn’t know a great deal about the city except that it was deemed to be one, if not the most beautiful cities in all of South America. We motored up through the harbour to where the two marinas were and finally found our way to the Private Yacht Club called Club de Pesca where we had been so fortunate to have found a ... read more

Having far too much of a good time to get of my butt and get into some serious blogging so apologies (once again) for being slack and not keeping up to date in blog world. So much so, we are now in Cartagena in Colombia and I am in catch up mode. So back to Bonaire and the story of the three plus weeks we had there. We arrived on Bonaire on Australia Day (the 26th of January for you non Aussies) and caught up with the crew of Nika who had very kindly made Anzac Biscuits for us. They were leaving the next day so we spent as much time as we could with them and they introduced us to some new friends they had made from the boat Allways Sunday, Ricky and Robin and ... read more

South America » Venezuela » North-Eastern January 31st 2010

We had not done any extended passages for quite a long time so the thought of heading our for a couple of nights at sea brought some mixed emotions. We had really been enjoying the short island hops and now we had to get the boat ready for a bit more a serious sail work. We planned to sail to the A.B.C’s, being the islands of Bonaire, Curacao and Aruba, via the islands off the Venezuelan coast. Unfortunately, due to piracy issues, a lot of the Venezuelan coast we had hoped to cruise in had been classed as a no go zone and there were some concerns being raised about the islands off that coast as well. About three weeks before we were due to leave, yacht had recently been boarded and robbed by armed pirates ... read more

Well what a slacky I have been, here we are sitting in the True Blue Marina in the suburb of True Blue (No Australian association that I can find of) and getting ready to set sail tomorrow for the Venezualan Island of Los Roques and thus ending our time in the Caribbean. We have been here over a month already and while I had all good intentions of blogging more regularly, a couple of things got in my way, the usual being the lack of internet and the second thing has been this settling into the Caribbean lifestyle, that is to say, take it easy mon, you don wanna rush dis ting called life mon, you gotta relax brother, tings will get done man. And so that is the way of the word. So I have ... read more

December 12 2009 Crossing the Atlantic Ocean Hello Everyone, well this blog is a bit of a mixed bag to say the least. The first section is by Debs and recounts her memories of the trip across and the second section is copies of the logs we sent to Rally Control during our trip across. A fait bit of reading but seeing you all will have some time off over Christmas, you might be able to get through it!!! Just over 24 hours ago we arrived on the beautiful Caribbean Island of St Lucia after 18 days sailing from Las Palmas. We all survived the crossing well with food and water left over!! (Mainly because we had only one shower the whole crossing, a few sponges baths and some baby wipe washes!!! We all still love ... read more

Europe » Spain » Canary Islands » Gran Canaria November 21st 2009

Hi everyone, sorry for the lack of blogs recently but we have been just a tad busy getting ready to cross the Atlantic. We have been in Las Palmas on the island of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands for the past 12 days. There are 218 yachts and crew here and everyone has been running around like blue a#@^ed flies getting their boats ready to go. We leave here tomorrow at 1.00pm for the official start of the crossing. The "Canaries are sensational and I will post more about our time on the islands of Isle Grasciosa and Lanzarotte when we get across to St Lucia as well as the time we have been here in Las Palmas. There are 218 yachts taking part in the rally, some in the racing division and the rest ... read more

Porto Santo - Madeira - Canary Islands (300 nautical miles) We left Porto Santo on Friday the 16th of October, heading out about 10.30am for a very leisurely sail to Madeira, about 30 miles away to the south. We had met up with a couple of Aussies while we were at Porto Santo, Mano and Shelley who hail from Brisbane and we really enjoyed their company and learning from their experiences as well. All being well we were going to see more of them on our trip to the Canaries and across to and through the Panama. It was a beautiful morning that we left, lots of sun, clear skies and a nice breeze, perfect for trying out the new headsail and hopefully being able to hoist the gennaker for the first time as well. We ... read more

Lagos to the Island of Porto Santo - 450 nautical miles. We spent our last day at the Sopromar Boat Yard getting the boat readied and the last few glitches with the windows being sorted out at last. Final provisioning was done for what we had anticipated was going to be about a four day passage. Debs has been very busy cooking up lots of individual meals that we just have to slip into the oven and half an hour later, voila!! Instant meal. We tried this out on our Bay of Biscay crossing and it worked a treat and I am sure it will be just as successful on this passage. We met up with Kel and Kerry from a Hanse 470 called Freedom. We had spent some time with Kel in the Hamble at ... read more

SUNBOY IS HEADING HOME Well after getting the boat tied up and sorted Willem and I headed off to one of the local bars that has wi fi to check emails. The very exciting news we received is that Sunboy is now an official starter in the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers 2009, along with 225 other cruising and racing yachts. Wahoooo. Our elation was soon quashed when the technicians told us that Hanse had sent the wrong windows and just as I was about to ring up the factory for a few quiet words, Debs rushed up to tell me that they hadn’t sent the wrong windows, it was just a mistake on the technicians part - whew!!! So here we are in the Sopromar boat yard. It is Sunday the 4th of October and our ... read more

Lisbon (Oeiras) - Sines - Sagres - Lagos - LATE BREAKING NEWS We tied up in Oeiras Marina, smack bang next to a boat called Solitude, a very large and beautiful looking Hanse 54. Small Nest was a couple of boats away and, as usual, saw a few other boats we had shared marinas with since we struck Portugal, a few of them being British and Northern European Yachts heading south to make the Canary Islands for the start of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers which leaves from Las Palmas on the island of Grand Canarias for the 2800 mile crossing of the Atlantic to St Lucia in the Caribbean. We had been talking to Willem and Haike about their arrangements of doing the A.R.C and making their way through the Panama and across the Pacific ... read more
