Nazare - Ilha da Berlenga - Lisbon We left Nazare late on the morning of the 13th of September to sail down to the Island of Berlenga, a distance of 20 to 30 odd miles. We dropped our trolling gear over the side, hoping to pick up the odd mackerel. The conditions were incredibly nice for a gentle day sail down to the island and we just enjoyed the casualness of the trip for the first two or three hours. We ended up getting a bit of tide against us and decided that we needed to get to the island with enough light to be able to try and pick out an anchorage as we were advised that the holding ground where we were going was not all that great. On came the motor and we ... read more

September 14 2009 Batalha, Alcobaca and Obidos. We had to catch the bus to the towns of Batalha and then catch a bus back from there to Alcobaca and of course back to Nazare. The Stellermans are brilliant travellers and Haike is very resourceful as far as her research is concerned so all we had to do was basically sit back, relax and be guided as to when and where to be, too easy!!. We caught the bus from the marina into Nazare town, headed to the local markets which open every day from early in the morning to about 1.00pm and where you can buy every form of fresh food available in this part of the world from fruit and veg, seafood and all forms of fresh and cured meats. Mangoes from Venezuela were highly ... read more

Pavoa de Vazim - Aveiro - Figueiro da Foz - Nazare This blog takes in about 150 miles of the Portuguese Atlantic Coast, incorporating the departure from Pavoa de Vazim heading for Aveiro, Figueiro da Foz and Nazare, all of which we sailed in company with A Small Nest. The reason we did this part of the coast this way was primarily due to the spring tides and the times they are occurring at the moment. Our pilotage books indicated we needed to be able to enter Figueiro da Foz at or just before high tide and to go from Pavoa direct to Figueiro to catch that tide meant a 4.00am start, a time that neither we nor the Stellermans were at all interested in. The other option of course was to stop off at Aveiro ... read more

Day trip to Porto - Thursday 3 September 2009 Another good feature of staying at Pavoa de Vazim was the metro link from there to Oporto. We walked to the metro station which was about a 15 minute walk and arrived at the station ready to take on the automatic ticket booths. Well they had us nicely confused in about two minutes flat and then we were rescued by a very friendly Portuguese lady who spoke fluent English. Our little saviour had our tickets organised pronto and we enquired as to the source of her command of our native tongue - simple - she watched television, well everything except soap operas, she didn’t like them at all. We were to find out that most, if not all television shows and movies that are not produced in ... read more

Hola Portugal and Pavoa de Vazim. We left Bayona on the 31st of August with the harbour starting to show signs of a big Atlantic fog rolling in. Sure enough it continued to fill and soon we were heading along very cautiously, eyes paying particular attention to our radar, G.P.S and having Luke and Debs up on the bow keeping a lookout with eyes and ears peeled. We got past Cape Silleiro, the western most point of the Ria de Vigo and after clearing the rocks off the cape we turned south to Portugal. At least our course was easy once we reached our turning waypoint. Simply point the boat at 185’ magnetic and set the auto pilot. As the fog was still thick we continued to plot our position, speed and course in case our ... read more

Bayona - Ria de Vigo North West Spain Well after getting into Bayona and seeing our old British chum in safe and sound we entered the Monte Real Yacht Club Marina which has to be in one of the most picturesque settings in this part of the world. The Marina is beneath the very impressive Monte Real Yacht Club Building which is perched up nice and high, built of sandstone and smacks of gin and tonics and big fat Cuban cigars and very pukka Spanish yachties and power boaties. All of this sits below the ramparts of centuries old Castle ramparts enclosing the 18 hectares of buildings and grounds and now the home of a very impressive hotel and restaurant. Evidently the Monte Real Yacht Club is a big favourite of Northern European Yachtsmen (and women) ... read more

The Three Rias we visited - Muros, Pontevedra and Vigo So many people we had spoken to told us how beautiful the Rias of north west Spain were. In all honesty, we had no idea of what to expect in real terms but essentially they are like big, long and wide areas of water, a bit like Pittwater near Sydney in some ways. They have towns and villages dotting the coastline in some of them and in others such as Ria de Vigo, the city of Vigo takes up a big chunk of the coast. Our first port of call was of course Portosin in the Ria de Muros where we sailed to from La Coruna. Portosin is a small seaside town with a pretty active fishing fleet. The marina is not all that large and ... read more

We had the boat well and truly prepared for what had the potential to be a long day trip down the coast. We had set our passage plans to stay quite wide off the coast to stay away from any potential lee shores and try and avoid any fishing nets that might be laid out. We had spoken to quite a few yachties that had come from the south who had had nets caught in their prop and by all accounts, not a good experience and one we always try as hard as we can to avoid at all costs. We left the marina at 8.30am after getting the latest weather forecast which showed we might get a bit stronger winds around the Cape but at least they were pointing us in the right direction. We ... read more

Hola from La Coruna - N.W Spain - The Galician Coast Well we did sleep rather well on our first night in La Coruna, originally having plans of going out for dinner with John and Sue; we decided we might wait until we were all feeling more alive to do so. The Marina a Coruna has only been opened for a couple of months and so all the staff are very keen to make everyone feel very welcome and help in anyway they can. On top of that, they are doing great opening specials and so to stay here is incredibly reasonable compared to other marinas we have stayed at. We really didn’t have any idea as to how long we were going to stay and typical of the Sunboy crew we decided to just take ... read more

Crossing the Bay of Biscay - Saturday the 25th of July to Monday the 27th of July 2009. Pretty excited getting up about 6.00am to be ready for the 7.00am kick off. We were all up and dressed, had a quick brekkie and checked the boat again and off we headed with Swagman in the lead. We went down the north coast of Belle Ille with the sea in a very calm state indeed. Nikki was at the helm as we motor sailed down the coast and as we turned the corner we were hit with a real tide over shallow water experience and the sea was quite turbulent with short sharp waves with occasional quite large rollers coming in. Nikki took them on with real confidence and determination and rolled the boat over the waves ... read more
