We had to back track to the main transportation town of San Pedro Sula, which was about 2 hours form the port of Le Cieba. We changed buses and off to the capital Tegucigalpa, (7 hours) The reason for being in the capital was purly to get to Nicuragua as it was not possible to get to the border in time. So a night in a city that looked more like Bangdad than I care to remember. We found quite a decent place to stay for the night, and a great pork stir fry type meal from a street vendor outside [View Full Entry]

On board food service

Before we get to the sun and sand, must tell you about the trip there. We left Livingston on the 4am ferry (you can only get to Livingston by boat).... it was about a 1 hours boat ride in the blackness of early morning. We got to the port town of Puerto Barrios where we were acousted by taxi drivers offering to take us to a town to catch the bus to the border. We have figured out how the scheme works: the closer the people are to the boat or bus you are getting off from, the more expensive the [View Full Entry]

Well after our whilstle stop tour of Tikal, we spent one more night at Tortugal....although this time not in as much comfort! We arrived in Rio Dulce and called the manager of the hotel to fetch us in the boat. When he arrived we were told that there was no room at the inn for us! John the manager felt bad for us and put us up in the half finished hotel extention at the very back of the property! Kind of him and after the hard ground of camping in Tikal...it was easy to accept a mattress! The next morning, [View Full Entry]

Well first sorry for the long delay, its tough dragging ourselve to a hot internet cafes when typing 10 lines take me about half an hour. But in the spirit of Sharing is Caring I will suffer along. Well we left Rio Dulce for a day to head 3 hours North for a bit of culture taking in the Mayan ruins of Tikal. The Chicken bus was a cultural exprense in itself. No need to pack "pad kos" because at one of the many bus stops people get on and sell food, anything from sliced green mangos covered in chilli sauce to [View Full Entry]

We were at Rio Dulce before leaving to Tikal, we just got to typing order incorrect, please forgive us. We left Lanquin and made our way to Rio Dulce. Trip was rather uneventful except for the immense heat and dry desert scenery. Arriving at Rio Dulce and feeling that warm fresh air was fantastic. Rio Dulce town itself is not much to see. A real "one horse town" consisting of a road running parallel to an edge of the river. BUT ! Oh my word does it sell everything!!! They are really equipped for the big fancy boats that obviously sail [View Full Entry]

A tough life!
Hi all !! After three days in Antigua we thought it was high time to get moving again. We have discovered that both of us rather like being in one place for a while . This whole ' living out a backpack thing' is seriously over-rated! Weird how we have this overwhelming desire to unpack our bags and feel like we belong somewhere....be it only for 2 or 3 days. We caught yet another bus, again at sparrow's fart in the morning... first to Guatemala City and then onto a place to called Coban. From Coban we caught a combi (packed [View Full Entry]

The last hardcore trek up!
On the road again. We left San Pedro, on lake Atilan early morning, with a 30 min boat ride across the lake we arrived in small town called Panajachel, to find a bus to Antigua (not one of the Caribean islands) We had to wait about an hour for our first Chicken bus ride.It turned out to be quite a nice bus, no chickens, and it took about 4 hours to get to Antigua. After we looked at a few hostels, we chose one about 6 blocks from the center of town. Antigua is VERY touristy with loads of American students [View Full Entry]

Lovely Antigua

Hi ! We are in Guatemala at the moment. We had a really pleasant border crossing and were lucky enough to meet up with an Italian couple and travelled the whole way with them. We decided against the gruelling chicken bus journey and paid the more luxury option and caught a mini van (almost door to door!). We headed down to Panajachel, to catch a boat across the lake to our next planned week long stop. We have now at the lake side village of San Pedro. Lake Atilan is a massive lake around 17km wide, clear (quite cold waters) with [View Full Entry]

Chi Chi market, Guatemala
Zoolas. San Pedro

It was sad to say good by to Puerto Escondido and if you ask Mel, she would have changed the ticket and stayed another week or two..... Just because we got eat fresh fish every day, swim at the best beaches we have ever seen, there was pure white sand and turquois water that seemed to be just the right temperture to cool you off. Talk about being unrealistic! Well it was a "quick" 12 hour bus ride through the night to get to San Cristibal Del Casas, a town up at about 2000m in the Southen Mexican highlands. the claim [View Full Entry]

San Cristobal market
Chumula, near San Cristobal

We had a nightmare bus journey from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido, on the bus we have now nicknamed the ´´Vomit Comet´´!! For obvious reasons. Man !! It was probably the most windy road I have ever been on !!! 9 hours of it too!!! I sat in front with the driver the whole way, staring fixed at the road ahead.....although that too was quite scarey. The driver drove like a maniac and every now and again I thought he had misjudged a corner. This is all while Ken slept in ignorant bliss!! Puerto Escondido is lovely. Much smaller than we had [View Full Entry]
