Well, when were in Monteverde we met a guy who had bought this T-shirt, with a cartoon depicting a scary cliff side drive, with Monteverde as the location and a slogan ´´I Survived the road to Monteverde´´ As we had arrived with the Jeep-Boat-Jeep trip we thought that maybe it was the route the local bus took to get there from La Fotuna.....because we had not experienced anything to warrent buying such a Tshirt. We soon realised that it was the route we were now travelling on to the beach! After two hours of bone jarring and a bit of cliff [View Full Entry]

O' look it's the Camel Man

We loved this place! So great being cooler than the beaches (never thought I would complain about being too hot!) and it was loads cooler than La Fortuna too. The Jeep-Boat-Jeep ride was most definitely worth every cent and we arrived cool, calm and collected at a wonderful hostel called Posada Elena. The area was a collection of really great activities and small industries, with a real rural village feel. The first thing you notice is the large old fashion milk tins in front of lots of driveways. We found out latter that the small farm owners milk their cows and leave [View Full Entry]

What a great part of Costa Rica. Even the 6 hour bus trip was beautiful. Lush green cattle farms and rolling hills alternating with forested mountains, the roads lined with bizzy lizzies and tree ferns. Unfortunately the 'direct' bus from San Jose, stopped for anyone and everyone, including the schoolkids on their way home later in the afternoon. Once again on arriving, we were met by loads of touts and 'tourist guides' all promoting their favourite hostel (of course all offering them a kick back). It is my worst part of travelling. Normally by the time we get to our destination [View Full Entry]

Tourists!
Tourists!
No chance of looking like this eating rice and beans in Central America!
We have gone out of our way to avoid the bigger cities (other than horrible Tegucigalpa in Honduras) but headed to the bussling San Jose to give it a chance. One night is more than enough! When we first arrived we were dropped off at a bus stop not to far from the hostel we were going to stay at and thought we would walk. After about 200m we felt so intimidated by the dirty roads, litter and homeless sleeping on boxes that we jumped in the nearest taxi! In hindsight it wasn't that bad....you know how it is: the bus [View Full Entry]

Samara Beach
Samara Beach
Exactly how we pictured Costa Rica!
We left the glowing lights of Tama Gringo behind for the beach town of Samara. Yet another palm fringed warm water perfect beach, WHAT A CRAP LIFE WE HAVE. It was a small town where we found a cute place to stay with a few hammocks and relaxed feel. The idea was to learn to surf, but the waves were not playing along. So we decided to rather relax and eat, as usual. It is hard when sitting infront of the computer to actually remember what we did in some of these places, but it must have been good because we [View Full Entry]

Backpacking lets you be cheap. We snuck into a fancy hotel for a sunset swim.
Bring on the white sandy palm tree swept beaches of Costa Rica!!!! After an altogether painless border crossing.....lets rephrase that....The best and fastest border crossing we have had yet! We arrived in the famously touristy town of Tamarindo. We weren't sure what to expect because most backpackers are not too complementory about the place...most call it 'Tama Gringo', which says it all! Besides the accomodation being on the expensive side (not set up for backpackers at all) as the town caters very much for the smoozy holiday. Mainly Americans flying in for 10 days or so to blow alot of cash. [View Full Entry]

We hit the Pacific coast for the second time this trip, the last time being Puerto Escondido in Mexico. After staying at the disappointing Finca Magdaleina we were really so excited to arrive at the Hostel Casa de Oro and have this fantastically friendly lady greet us with a huge smile and a warm 'Como estas?' Another well run and organised hostel. Even the shared kitched was spotless....As you can imagine, being the fanatic cleaner I am....one of the first things I notice is 1) How clean is the bathrooms 2) How clean is the kitchen? Sad I know !!!! We [View Full Entry]

We managed to get to the Island of Ometepe on the Saturday of easter week end. The prosessions that we had looked so forward to were not that great - damn tourists, never happy. We caught a bus to the port of San Jorge to board the ferry to the island. It was a like new years day on Durban beach front and there were people every where. A quick ferry trip and we were there. The mystical Island of Ometepe, home to two volcanoes, one still active. The finca (farm accomodation) we chose to stay at was on the opposite [View Full Entry]

Well - Granada was most definitely one up on Leon! Much prettier town (sure, more touristy....but hell we are not shy to say that we don't mind that!) Not quite as impressive as Antigua, Guatemala- but there are some really impressive building and incredible homes. I really wish we could transport one of those houses and plonk it down in Cape Town! The homes all had these grand big doors, built right onto the roads (almost like big thick fortess walls)...then inside these gorgeous massive central courtyards, with fountains and plants all intricately placed.....incredible! Granada was just as hot as Leon, [View Full Entry]

Firstly I must apologize. We are about 10 destinations behind on our travel blogs. This is a mix of not having computers at all our locations and pure laziness. We are currently in Costa Rica enjoying the 30 C plus weather. The blog entries are dated correctly, and hopfully we will be able to catch up. Adding photos take a really good internet connection, so we will add more photos to previous blog entries when we are able to. With the help of a our Nica bicycle taxi driver we crossed borders and were taken to the first chicken bus headed [View Full Entry]
