I am currently on my way back home from Bonn, where I spent a weekend with my friends Simone, Katrin, Anke, and Tom. On Friday, I was invited to my former employer’s summer party in Bonn. The party started off in the afternoon in the garden of the villa the company is based in. Some of my former colleagues still work with that company, but my friend Simone, for example, started working with a company that is based not far from Frankfurt, so she came all the way from there to attend the party. It was good to see my friends and former colleagues, and of course there were a lot of stories to tell. There was a great buffet, and a saxophone quartet played for us. Very nice. Some of us ended up in the ... read more

I am at the airport in London at the moment, just returned from Melbourne and waiting for my connecting flight to Hamburg. In Melbourne, I attended the International Congress of Applied Psychology. The congress is huge, there were almost 3,300 delegates. It covers many different areas, including work and organisational psychology. I conducted three presentations on different topics from work. One was on a special measurement technique my company developed a couple of years ago, one was on the trainability of intelligence and its implications for psychological assessments, and one was on a learning and careers advice project we run in Ireland. We also had a poster there, which was on other learning and careers advice projects we run, but that did not need to be presented. I was just there and could be looked at. ... read more

I just arrived in Melbourne, after a wonderful week with friends in Newcastle. I stayed with Monica and Scott, and it was just great to spend time with them. Monica had taken the whole week off work, and Scott, who is self-employed at the moment, took time, too. On Sunday night, we had a barbecue and sat around a fire that Monica had lit. Camo, Adriaan, Donny, and Tinks came over. So good to see them! Monday was a pretty active day. In the morning, I went to gym with Monica, afterwards we had lunch with Tinks. In the afternoon, Monica, Scott and I tried out the new bike path that runs from Belmont North (where Mon and Scott live) to downtown Newcastle. In the evening, we were invited to Camo’s place for dinner. And we ... read more

Yesterday night, I arrived back in Australia. Yay! And they even let me into the country . I had a lot to do last week after coming home from Copenhagen on Sunday night. I still had to finish my preparations for the congress in Melbourne, and there was a lot of other work to do. Apart from that, I had two appointments with trainers, one on Monday and one on Thursday evening, because I would like to start personal training. More on that soon. Besides, I had some paperwork that I needed to finish, and, and, and… Thursday night, I went for a barbecue with my colleagues, on the beach of the river Elbe, which feels almost like being by the sea. After four hours of sleep, I got up, packed my suitcase and went to ... read more

Last week, I attended the European Conference on Positive Psychology in Copenhagen. I left on Tuesday afternoon, and we flew in a tiny little airplane which we could only access on the airfield as it is too small to be accessed straight from the terminal. Bo came to pick me up at Copenhagen airport, which was pure luxury for me and really nice anyway. He took me to my hotel, where I checked in, and then we went for a nice little walk around the city centre. Bo explained me a lot about the city. It reminds me a bit of Hamburg as it is traversed by many canals just like Hamburg is. There are beautiful old houses, and the Danish successfully combined the ancient with modern architecture. They have a very modern opera house, theatre, ... read more

I’m all back into work. A lot of things are happening at the moment. I had written that one of my projects here in Hamburg is to write my doctoral dissertation. The dissertation will be on a topic in the field of Positive Psychology. Positive Psychology is quite a new branch of psychology. Some researchers thought that it was about time to do research not only on the question how mentally ill people could be helped, but also on the issue how “normal” people could be happier and make more out of their lives. One astonishing thing I found was that researchers seem to confirm many of the assumptions Buddhism made more than 2,000 years ago. I had read a lot about Buddhism after the European Buddhist Youth Festival that I had attended in December, and ... read more

As you might recall, Mike Harker flew from Tegelberg last month. He said it was going to be his last flight. He sent me two pictures, one that shows him when getting ready for launch, and one that shows him in the air with the Seedwings Space. There was a little documentary on that last flight on German TV, nice one. Have a look url=http://www.zdf.de/ZDFmediathek/hauptnavigation/startseite/#/beitrag/einzelsendung/1054186/SPORTreportage-vom-23-Maihere. Go to the bottom of the screen and click on "Sport Aus Aller Welt" and then in the time line to about half way. His flight flim is the last minute of the broadcast. There is also an interview with him and a report on his flight from Zugspitze in 1973 and his bad accident in 1977 url=http://www.br-online.de/bayerisches-fernsehen/suedwild/schwangau-aktuelle-sendung-20100518-ID1274206253452.xmlher... read more

I must confess, it took me a couple of days to get used to being back here in Hamburg. It was just great to see good friends, I was so happy about that. Some say that the Worlds at Tegelberg were, as a competition, a disaster. As far as the weather is concerned, I think they are absolutely right. A competition without a single task is of course the worst that pilots and organisers can imagine. On the other hand, would like to express my respect for the way the organisers and also the pilots dealt with the situation. They all had taken time off. The pilots had put a lot of effort into preparing themselves for a world class comp. They had spent a lot of money. The organisers had put a lot of effort ... read more

Yesterday, we finally had a task. The sky was already blue in the morning, the sun was out. I could not believe it. One day before the Worlds - good weather. One day after - good weather. Who on earth made the weather gods so angry? As it would not have been a valid World Championship with only one task, but the pilots were of course eager to fly, the organisers decided to set a fun task for the women and rigids. The tasks were up and down the ridge, around 50 km for the women and 90 km for the rigids. It took us a while to get all the pilots off the mountain because the wind kept on changing. And the ground is still very wet, so clouds built up quickly, and conditions were, ... read more

I’ll just give you a quick update on the results of the World Championships 2010. We had set tasks for the women and the rigids, but cloudbase did not lift, so we had to cancel the day again - after waiting until almost 5 p.m. But there was a task for the Swifts. None of them made goal today, so it must have been pretty difficult. So the results for Class 2 are: 1st Manfred Ruhmer (AUT), 1878 points 2nd Steve Cox (CHE), 1860 points (that was close!) 3rd Bob Baier (GER), 1435 points 4th Jacques Bott (FRA), 1210 points 5th Brian Porter (USA), 1186 points 6th Johannes Rengeling (GER), 411 points 7th Günther Tschurnig (AUT), 259 points 8th Günther Obweger (AUT), 204 points 9th John Bonvin (CHE), 105 points I’m off to the party now. ... read more
