Hey!!! Well I guess this will be my last blog as I´m going home on Friday...boooo!!! The last part of the South America trip has definately been the best! Brazil is officially my favourite country! Well the city tour in Montevideo wasn~t the best...in fact about 5 people out of our group managed to fall asleep on it!!! Its not the most exciting city! We went out in the evening though and had a pretty big night so I guess that made up for it! We went to a bar that had a live band playing salsa music so we all tried our hand at some salsa moves! :) The following day we had a 5 hour bus rise to a place called Salto...When we arrived in Salto a lady came up to me at the ... read more
Hola chicos! (thats hello guys for those of you that don't speak spanish!) I've had a busy few days so lots to tell you all about! When I left you last I said we were going out in Sydney for a pub crawl in rave gear...well the selection of rave equipment in Sydney wasn't the best so we did what we could and went as rave chavs instead! Anyway it was a great night...although a bit messy! (see pics!) Sunday was supposed to be a day of rest but Kate got me up and persuaded me to come shopping in Bondi with her. It was actually worth it cos otherwise I would have just wasted the whole day. We didn't make it to the beach cos the weather was miserable but we went to the huge ... read more
Hello! I know I said I'd write more often but I feel like I've been dead busy. Looking back on it though, haven't really done much! I guess I'm just lazy! Last Last Thursday we went to Prison Island. Its called Prison sland because the Zanzibarians started to build a prison there. When it was finished, however, there was a massive outbreak of cholera on the mainland so the building was used as a quarantine facility for people showing symptoms coming across to the islands. Now the building is a very expensive restaurant but the island is also home to a giant tortoise sanctury. The giant tortoises were brought over to the island from the Seychelles in return for some Zanzibari fauna. The Seychelles is the only place where these tortoises live in the wild because ... read more
Hey guys! Sorry I haven't written in a while but have been quite busy here so got loads to tell you....you might want to get yourself a cuppa because this could take a while! The first Monday I was here was Easter Monday so no-one went into the hospital. It was also Brian's (one of the medics) birthday so to celebrate we had a sunset dhow ride from Stone Town. It was really nice and there was a band playing as well as lots of wine! When we came back we had a bbq and a house party (which involved 6 litres of spirits and a lot of sambuca!) It was a really good night and I think Brian enjoyed himself. I think we were supposed to have our Stone Town orientation on Tuesday but because ... read more
Hey eveyone! Happy Easter! Hope you're all ok. I've been a busy bee this week so I'd better get started!!! To be honest, my week started off pretty quietly. Monday we went to Coco Beach, the hotel and beach resort and sunbathed all day (got a nice top-up to my tan!) Monday night we all went out for a chinese because Matt was leaving Tuesday and I was leaving Wednesday. After driving around for about 20 minutes in the taxi trying to find the place (the taxi driver insisted he knew where he was going!) we sat down and ordered our food...I had sesame chicken and noodles :) It was probably one of the first meals there that I properly enjoyed but I was stuffed after!!! Anyway when the bill came they had added on all ... read more
Hey everyone! Wow this has been a pretty long week looking back on it but it seems to have flown by! Last Saturday was a really good day. we went into Osu, which is a part of Accra that is quite touristy and I got a pizza from the food court...let me tell you now...after not having any dairy for 3 weeks that cheese was heaven!!! In the afternoon we all went to Accra stadium to watch the world cup qualifier between Togo and Cameroon! Apparently Togo can't play their home matches in Togo because there is too much fighting so they have to play them in a neutral ground which suits me down to the ground!!!! The atmosphere was brilliant and each team has a band with drummers and singers and trumpet players and clappers ... read more
Hey everyone!!! Well I think I left you last time with the news that our company had gone bust and we had to pay our money again to stay in the compound...well a lot of people couldn't afford to do this so they were told that they had to leave on Tuesday...it was pretty sad and it meant that there were only about 10 of us left out of about 30! I'm just glad that it wasn't me because I'm not sure how well I would have coped after being in Ghana for only a week. Anyway I went back up to the academy on Tuesday and I got a lift which was good and saved me about an hour and a half traveling! There were a couple of injuries from the weekend but nothing serious, ... read more
Hey everyone!!! Well....what a week!!!! There won't be any photos on this blog cos I'm at an internet cafe but will try to put some in the next one! On Monday night we went out for a few drinks to a bar about 20 mins from where we're living...it was pretty much like being in Spain or Greece drinking outside and its still so hot at 1am its crazy!!! Plus its like 1.5 cedis (75p) for a pint so it makes it even better!!! Anyway I didn't think I was too drunk but we left for the academy on Tuesday and on the 3 hour tro tro ride up there I felt soooooo bad!!! I had to hang out of the window to get some breeze cos I felt so ill!!! Lesson learnt there....don't drink the ... read more
Hey everyone! Well when I last left you I was just abot to set off for Ghana and I wasn't too apprehensive about it...well when I got off the computer that night I just thought to myself "Jane, what the hell are you doing?!?!". Anyway my flight from Manchester to LHR was good and I managed to meet up with a few people who were going out with the same company so that helped to relax me a little bit as it seemed like we all had no idea what to expect! The only other girl going out with me was called Charlotte and she'd just spent 6 months in Madrid teaching Engligh but she's origonally from the US so I can hear my accent coming back out a little!!! We also met up with two ... read more
Hello everyone! Well its the night before I leave for Ghana so I thought I'd try my first blog! Naz I'm copying you on this one but I enjoyed reading yours so much that I thought I'd do my own! I'm not sure how I feel at the moment. I don't think I'm really scared or apprehensive but it hasn't really sunk in that I'm leaving tomorrow for a year! (Ok maybe I am a little bit scared!) For those of you who don't know exactly what I'm doing, I'm going to do 4 weeks physiotherapy volunteering in Ghana, 6 weeks in Zanzibar then I'm going to stay with my friend Daniela in South Africa for 10 days before I head to Oz to (hopefully) do some physio work for 5-6 months and traveling after. On ... read more
