What an adventure! From January 6-18, Tom and I were down in the southern hemisphere of Africa, "overlanding" with Africa Travel Company (ATC) from Vic Falls to Jo'burg--meaning we travelled in a 23-passenger truck, pitched and slept in tents (often in the rain because it was the rainy season down there), and ate outdoors, helping the cook and cleaning up afterwards. The other members of the group were mostly young Aussies and New Zealanders who'd actually started in Nairobi and gone through Tanzania and Malawi. Our guide was a Belgian; the driver and cook were South African. ATC provided the transport, the food, and the tents; we brought along our own sleeping bags and air mattresses. We began our journey in Paris on January 4th, flying to Heathrow to catch our overnight British Airways flight to ... read more

Last weekend, the colors of the trees in Portland, especially those in the Japanese gardens, were, I must admit, just as lovely as those "back east." And, once, from atop the City Grill Restaurant, we were able to catch a glimpse of Mt. Hood through the clouds. I didn't travel to Portland for the scenery, however, but for the wedding of my eldest son Eric and his fiancee, Patti. The ceremony, which took place on Saturday, November 3rd at Portland's quaint Oaks Pioneer Chapel, was officiated by an older American friend of Eric's who did a marvelous job and even uttered a few words of French at the end. The groomsmen were either French or Quebecois and included my two younger sons, Sebastien and Marc, who'd flown over from Paris; Patti's sister was among the bridesmaids. ... read more

Washington, Maryland and Virginia showed us their fall colors from October 16-28. We were fortune to have lovely weather as well --it was "the calm before the storm" of Hurricane Sandy. The main purpose of the trip was to attend Tom's 55th class reunion from his high school, the Landon School, in Bethesda, Maryland. We attended events there, but we were also able to visit Washington, in particular the Mall, with its great monuments and memorials, as well as the very impressive Holocaust Museum and George Washington's house in Mt. Vernon. While Tom was at the school Saturday afternoon, I also got to the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian's American History Museum. While in D.C., we stayed with my college friend (thank you, Suzy!) and were able to have dinner with my oral history ... read more

The fall in the San Francisco Bay Area has been gorgeous. Blue, sunny skies, with the occasional morning and late afternoon fog rolling in through the Golden Gate. September and October are really the Area's loveliest months. It can be a bit chilly in the morning and the evenings, but people are still going around in cotton,f lip-flops and Bermuda shorts during the day. I've already posted a few photos on Facebook , but I thought you'd enjoy some other ones related to my activities here, esp. if you don't "do" Facebook. In a week or two, I'll post some other ones—this time of Tom's and my trip "back east" to Washington D.C. and Virginia, followed by those of my son Eric and his fiancée Pati's wedding in Portland, Oregon in early November. (Congratulations Eric and ... read more

Well, I got back to the San Francisco Bay Area and am getting acclimated again to life here. Tom and I have had two lovely weekends since my return: one camping for 3 nights at the City of Berkeley's camp at Echo Lake (near Lake Tahoe in the Sierras); the other a wedding in Healdsburg (Sonoma wine country) and a half a day at Bodega and Bodega Bay on the Coast. I hope you enjoy the photos!... read more

I left Dorset on Saturday, August 4th, taking the train from Wareham up to Waterloo Station in London. From Waterloo I transferred to Euston Station by tube and then took a Virgin train up to Penrith in Cumbria. I'd found the Virgin train online. It was actually cheaper going 1st class on Virgin than 2ndclass on National Rail, AND I had free WIFI and snacks! From Penrith I took a bus to Keswick and then a taxi on to Hassness House on Lake Buttermere. It was a long day. I'd heard of the British group "Ramblers", which I thought was the equivalent of the American Sierra Club group. Although founded about 60 years ago, Ramblers has since split in two, and I discovered (after the fact) that I'd actually booked, not with a Ramblers walking group ... read more

Following my stay in London, I took the train from Waterloo Station down to Wareham in Dorset. Sandra, my British friend, was waiting there in her black sports car to get me, and we drove to her home in Swanage, a lovely beach resort town on the coast. I'd been there to visit her two years previously and was delighted to be back for a 3-day stay. The weather was cool and windy. It would rain, and then all of a sudden the sun would come out, and then it would rain again. The sea was much too cold (for me,at least) to go swimming as I had last time, but I nevertheless took full advantage of the sea air and very much enjoyed my walks, not only in Swanage, but also further along the coast ... read more

When I got the opportunity to do an apartment exchange with a British couple living in London during the first few days of the Olympic games, my family and friends all exclaimed: "What a time to go! You'll be over there with all the crowds." Well, it was a great time to go, and I very rarely encountered crowds. Granted, I visited London "on the fringe" of the Olympics and only saw the Olympic Park from afar, but I felt the Olympics atmosphere and talked to people about their Olympics experience, and this, coupled with taking advantage of all that London has to offer, made for a unique trip. Day 1: Arriving at St. Pancras Railroard Station on the Eurostar from Paris on Friday, July 27th--about ten hours before the Olympics opening ceremony—everything seemed very organized ... read more

To my mind, nothing boosts the morale as much as sun and surf. After living near San Francisco Bay from January till June, I have been feeling "land-locked" back at my place in Paris. I've also missed seeing the sun. So, when a bit of summer weather finally came to northern France a few days ago, yesterday I headed to the coast. I couldn't get away for more than a day, but that was plenty of time to have a "change of ideas", as the French say. My destination was Deauville and its neighboring town, Trouville, in Normandy. I chose them because they are easily accessible from Paris (only a two-hour train-ride away) and because they both have wide, sandy beaches. In addition, Deauville has amenities that I really appreciate: wooden planks or "planches" ... read more

First off, please enjoy a few scenes of some of my favorite places in Paris... You will probably notice, however, upon reading the text and the captions of the other photos (39 in all), that rather than an actual "travelog," this particular blog entry is quite personal. Hopefully, it will give you an idea of the life of a Franco-American living in Paris and "the flavor" of this beautiful city. As my friends and family know, Paris has been my "adopted home" for more than 40 years. I returned here from San Francisco in early June, and I must say that it's nice to be back for the summer, even though the weather has been rotten. There have been grey skies and showers for weeks on end;you can count the days on one hand where the ... read more
