Dan and Danielle turn the tables on the great immigrant pioneers and leave the Midwest for Scandinavia. Who knows what hijinks they'll encounter but one thing is for sure: they will be expensive.

For some reason updating this travel blog seems really daunting to us. I started writing about the trip to Finse, but only got halfway through. Oops... And now it's the end of the semester, plus we've had visitors for two weeks straight. It's madness I tell you! But I promise that once next week rolls around and we get a moment of peace, we will try to bring you up to speed. Until then, check out my Flickr page, it's a photo website that's really easy to navigate. All my photos (that I've uploaded so far) are organized for your (and my) convenience. More on the way, too. http://flickr.com/photos/43441665@N00/collections/ --This link will bring you to my "Collections" page. The one on the left ("The Great Northern Adventure") contains the sets of photos from our trip. (The ... read more

The Cabin Trip

We had our cabin trip with Filologisk Forening (the humanities college student society that we're members of--they even let Dan the scientist in!). It was a pretty good time, save for a few bumps in the road--the first being the icy cold downpour that drenched us as we left to catch the T-bane (tay-bahnuh, i.e. metro) to Nationaltheatret. It seriously rained HARD for 5-7 minutes, the very same 5-7 minutes that we were outside. Funny how that works. So I spent the bus ride there quite damp. We arrived in Bærum after about an hour on the buses, and my how the scenery changed! Suddenly we were in a hilly, rural area, one that also happens to be the richest and most expensive municipality in Norway. Go figure. (Camilla's family lives here, but she swears they ... read more

I keep tryin' to get Dan to update but he's not having any of it. Well...first off I haven't been trying that hard. And secondly, he is swamped with classwork (guy can't get a break even in Norway). I was trying to quit hogging the blog, but I guess it's best I send a little shout out so you know what's up over here. Dan is trying to finish up a lot of stuff (including a take-home final exam--he's already done with one class!) before Friday so we can go on the cabin trip without worrying. I have stuff to do, too, but it's less pressing (as usual). This week ends one of my classes as well, but I have a long paper to write for it by December, and then a test. Hopefully I can ... read more

Thanksgiving (already!)

We've already celebrated Thanksgiving more than a month before most of you will! Our Canadian friend Kate hosted a very nice Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday at her home because Monday is Canadian Thanksgiving. Her mom is the Canadian ambassador...and they live in the superfancy ambassador's house. That made it all the more exciting. Since Dan and I are the other two North Americans in our buddy group, we helped out by cooking a bunch and bringing the food to Kate's. We made two pumpkin pies, vanilla-nutmeg whipped cream, apple and onion stuffing, sweet rolls, Weber family corn pudding and roasted butternut squash and beets. Other people in our group helped Kate prepare the food at her house. Cooking all that food really made us realize how amazing it is that our moms and grandmothers could possibly ... read more

Well I don't think Camilla will end up having people over to her house for fårikål. But that's ok, I think I will make some myself, actually! I just found some videos showing how to make it. Looks simple and tasty! Here's a link to a video of a Norwegian couple making a huge batch and showing you how to make it. Also there's a cute kitty. :P (I thought I could put the video right in here but it won't let me, boo.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pw6B76PqdRU You can try it too, if you want to try something authentically Norwegian. The name literally means sheep in cabbage. It was voted the national dish sometime in the 1970s. Basically...get a head of cabbage and a couple pounds of bone-in lamb or mutton stew meat, in chunks. You will also ... read more

I know some of you are wondering, "What happened to Dan & Danielle's blog? I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what crazy adventures they got into next!" Or maybe you were just waiting for us to get into one crazy adventure. Well, now that Dan's gonna be gone for the next four days (Booo, field trips! But I hope he has fun.) I have some peace! Or...I have nothing better to do than to curl up on my bed by my window with a cup of instant cappuccino and a bowl of oatmeal. Plenty of time to make a post. I did get to have an adventure, as a matter of fact. But, it wasn't very fun. At least I learned a lesson. Basically, I got lost in Oslo in the ... read more

So we resolved to take some trips. Little did we know how stressful it would be. Honestly. Worrying about money and school and timetables and destinations is too much for me. I know we need to JUST GO (as my friend Sam pointed out--lucky for him this is his general life philosophy, and it doesn't come so easy for others among us). It was particularly frustrating last night when we managed to decide on going to Stavanger, found really cheap tickets for next week, and then couldn't buy them online for a mysterious reason. I thought maybe it was the American credit cards, but that wouldn't make sense for a travel company, right?? Who knows, but I hope we can still get the inexpensive fares. Of course it is hard when you're on a budget--especially one ... read more

Some resolutions

Upon reviewing our pictures from the last couple of weeks, Danielle and I were kind of dismayed but not at all surprised to discover that most of them were of food we had cooked. Certainly homemade farfalle and magenta curry are more photogenic than your average meals but the fact remains: we've become a bit too cloistered. It seems understandable, mostly a reaction to the price of food and entertainment here; the cheapest activity we can engage is cooking (mostly) from scratch. It really accomplishes a lot: cuts down on food costs, allows us to eat things we otherwise can't find here, challenges to cook with minimal gadgets, space, utensils, etc., kills a good deal of time probably otherwise spent obsessively reading about the election, and on occasion serves as an excuse to interact with people ... read more

Art and Akershus Fortress

Last week we spent an afternoon at the National Gallery of Contemporary Art. It was really nice, took only a few hours to see the current exhibits, which included some interesting stuff. Of course much of it went over my head, being modern art and all. But it was free, which was the important part. :) My most favorite piece was part of a series from an artist who worked as a hotel housekeeper. It wasn't clear whether she had to take that job out of desperation, or if she did it for the sake of art (haha). But anyway, she would basically rifle through the rooms she cleaned and document what she saw. Take pictures. Write a little commentary. It was funny and interesting and perfectly appealed to my nosy side. Which I must say, ... read more

Got my computer at last. Pictures to come. We can use our skype phone now, so call us if you like!!! :) WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Though it was definitely a travail getting the computer. Got a mysterious letter in the mail from the post, said a bunch of Norwegian stuff I had to interpret. And then getting to the customs office was a bit tough. But we made it and here I am in my own room and getting to listen to music and call our parents. Such a relief. -danielle P.S. THANKS DAD.... read more
