I had been looking for things to due around the Hangzhou area as I have gotten a case of cabin fever with this dreary, gray, wet and cold weather we have been experiencing. Ms. Gao told me last week Hangzhou is famous for plum blossoms and that we should go view them at the Hangzhou Botanical Garden. Since this is our last term teaching in China I really want to take advantage of everything that is offered to us. I found a link online and discovered the entrance fee was only 10RMB=$1.59 per person. I emailed Sean and Galyna, Oral English teachers at our past school HDU, to see if they would like to join us on the adventure. Sure enough they did and we had a splendid time on Sunday afternoon. We told them to ... read more

Spring semester day 2, but really Pete's day 1 as he didn't have any teaching duties yesterday. I woke up around 9:45am...yep you read that correctly. We have had horrible sleeping schedules since returning to Hangzhou, we go to bed between midnight and 1am then get up around 10am. The way I look at our schedules is we have no where to be so why not go with how your body feels. This morning, I needed to be in Ms. Gao's office "anytime after 10am" so I took that as within the 10 o'clock hour would be fine. I quickly got showered, ate some corn flakes and headed out to Ms Gao's office, a quick 5 minute walk away. I LOVE living on campus, no more 45-80 minute bus commutes for us this term. When I ... read more

China always keeps me on my feet. I knew that we would get our schedules 4-5 days before the new term; I had requested them about 10 days before the new term and Ms. Gao, Head of Business English Dept, told me we would have plenty of time to prepare with 4 or 5 days before the term started. I was looking forward to last Thursday as I thought maybe today would be the day we got our new teaching schedules (5 days before the term). Then I received an email after 10:30pm from Ms. Gao stating Peter and I could pick up our teaching schedules on Friday. Pete could get his from the 6th floor office and I could get mine from the Business Adminstration Dept (my newly assigned dept). I quickly responded to the ... read more

We had bought some gifts in India for our families which we needed to ship home. But knew this was no adventure to do on our own. While we have had plenty of time since we returned from our trip but we needed the help of a Chinese person to aid us on our big, bad voyage to China Post. School will begin on Monday, February 20th so I knew the students would be returning to school any day. I had Pete text his former student, Ash, who Pete taught during Fall 2010 term at Hangzhou Wanxiang Polytechnic (WXY for short) to see when he would be returning to school so he could help us out. Ash, loved hanging out with us while we lived here before and was always a great help, even though he ... read more

Dali (dah lee) Dali is one of Yunnan's most popular tourist destinations; both for its historic sites and the Foreigners' Street that features western-style food, music, and English-speaking business owners, making it popular among both western and Chinese tourists. It is situated on flat farm land between a high mountain rage and Lake Er hai (R Hi). On the opposite side of Er Hai are more mountains yet these lack any trees. I was not able to determine if this was a natural phenomena or a result of man-created deforestation. It is home to a group of ethnic minority Chinese called Bai and Yi (Bye and Yee) Our bus ride to Dali was 4 -1/2 hours on a very comfortable bus, yet the drive could have been faster. After 90 minutes of driving we stopped for ... read more

Yunnan (you non) & Kunming- (coon – ming) We landed in Kunming at 4:45 am and I didn’t sleep at all on the 2-1/2 hr flight. I had a nervous feeling about landing this time since we switched employers and were depending on our last school not to cancel our Resident Permit cards. After our experience leavingIndiaI was almost counting on trouble getting back intoChina. Fortunately for us there were no issues and we cleared customs relatively quickly. After getting our bags we saw a lot of people either waiting for their flight or waiting for the cab line to open. Our flight wasn’t the only one to have landed in that hour, yet for some reason the airport goes out of their way to shut down the cab service at this time. Our solution was ... read more

Pete has always thought we should make a packing list but I have never gotten around to doing it and neither has he. This trip I really wanted to take the least amount of clothes with me to last our 5 weeks in cooler weather. Reason 1: to have more room to purchase items in India Reason 2: we would be on the move so I would be hauling my backpack around Reason 3: to see if I could really do it No matter how hard I try to underpack I ALWAYS have clothes that I never wear on a vacation. When I started packing, Laura was here in Hangzhou with us and she had just spent almost 3 weeks on the road traveling around Cambodia, Vietnam and China. I was shocked at how Laura was ... read more

I am writing this blog a week after our departure from India in order to cool off from our eventful departure. If I would have written this the day after the events occurred I don’t know if I could have kept a level head and I am the calm/mellow one in our relationship, so here it goes. It all started at 5pm when we shared a cab with Carole to the airport. She had prearranged the airport transfer with Intrepid Travel at the cost of $36 Australian Dollars as this was her 1st time traveling outside of Australia and New Zealand and she was a solo traveler. The fee was based on per person so Pete and I knew we could get it much cheaper on our own. Carole let us ride for free as she ... read more

Our last stop in India was the once British capital of India. Pete instantly liked this city better than any other city in India but he couldn’t pinpoint why. We finally decided it was due to the tree lined streets, wider boulevards, no cows wandering the city meaning no cow pies to avoid stepping in and all the yellow cabs instead of tuk tuks. When we arrived it was Republic Day, the day India no longer was under British Rule. We walked to the parade route but due to the amount of people we only saw one float and decided it wasn’t worth standing there too watch. During our time in India Pete had developed an infection of some sort in his nose and it was really bothering him. He decided it would be better to ... read more
