We love catching up with friends and family while we travel and this trip was no different. We then headed to Sonoma County where we stayed with Brad & Meghan plus their 15 month old twin boys, Justin & Logan. We had a BBQ, attended a surprise 30th birthday party and wine tasted around the Sonoma Town Square. We then headed to San Fran where we hiked Muir Woods in Marin County while waiting for our friends John & Julie to get off of work. As many times as we have visited San Fran we had never hiked Muir Woods and it was amazing to see the California Redwood trees. Next, we met up with John & Julie and enjoyed dinner at a German restaurant, Leopold, in the Russian Hill neighborhood. Great food, beer and atmosphere. ... read more

The first thing that comes to mind when we look back on our 2 days spent at Crater Lake National Park...BEAUTIFUL!!! The lake is 5 miles wide, is at an elevation of 6,000 feet, the deepest part of the lake is 1,943 feet deep. Crater Lake is the clearest lake in the world. There are so many unique features to this lake but I won't bore you with too many facts. One of my Leader Mentors at Weight Watchers told us we needed to spend the money and due the boat tour on the lake, so we spent the $39/person and took a 5.5 hr tour of the lake. The boat ride took us out to Wizard Island and we spent 3 hours hiking around the island and taking in the amazing views. There are only ... read more

It has been a while since our last blog and given the fact that our time in the US is coming to an end we figured a new post would help us get back on track in documenting our experiences. I recently went on a few hikes that are blog worthy so there is no time like the present to start blogging again. Next week we leave for a 26 day tour which includes Crater Lake, Sonoma, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Sacramento, Arroyo Grande, LA, Boston, Vermont, Connecticut, NYC, Chicago, and the Mosher family farm in Illinois. Realizing that our time is limited we are trying to take advantage of our proximity to old friends and new places. Elyse’s friend Holly and her husband Jason recently moved from San Diego to Bremerton, Washington. Elyse and Holly ... read more

Some may ask "Why did you get married again?" Or "Didn't you get married on 8-9-10?" The answer is "Because and Yes". Last summer was our civil/legal ceremony to be husband and wife. The ceremony we had last night was our ceremony to God to be husband and wife. I had never wanted a big church wedding ever since I was little but Pete and I also have always wanted to raise our children in the church. In the Catholic Church we hadn't received the Marriage Sacrament. This sacrament allows us to have our children, when we decided to start a family after our return from China, be baptized in the church and it also was one of Scott's wishes. Scott was with us in spirit last night. We set the date just 16 days ago ... read more

This week was such a great time! We picked up Mom from the airport on Sunday evening from her long flight from O'Hare via Seattle arriving in Portland around 9:30pm. We didn't have too much set in stone except for our Marriage Sacrament on Friday, June 10th at 5:30pm. Of course, being the family we are, we seemed to fill it will with lots of fun little outings. It was nice that our Mom's could get to know each other a little more and spend time together as they had only met the 3 days in Santa Barbara during our wedding festivities last August. Monday, I had to work 3 meetings so Mom went along with Pete tile shopping for the master suite bathroom. Tuesday, I awoke Mom at 9:30am since I had to work in ... read more

Friday, late afternoon, we arrived at Staci & Martin's apartment in Spokane, Washington. We lounged around that evening chatting and catching up since we last saw each other on New Year's Day, 4 months ago. Staci & I email, chat/video chat, or text message multiples every week but seeing each other is much more fun. Martin prepared us a Mexican style dinner that was very good and then we decided to go to a local bar to watch the Lakers/Mavericks game. Us ladies were more interested in having a few beers to relax. Saturday morning the 4 of us went to YMCA Central in Spokane as Staci & Martin are members there. Ali Vincent, Biggest Loser Season 5 Winner, recently moved from Arizona to Spokane and was putting on a 30 minute Boot Camp workout. Staci ... read more

It has been 5 months since we blogged last. We arrived back in the US on December 5th and now it is already May 5th. We have grown so much over the past 5 months and really needed a little getaway just the 2 of us. So we headed out for a 5 day/4night escape to Eastern Oregon, Northern Idaho and Eastern Washington. I have had a long time goal of seeing all 50 states by the time I turned 30 but realized when we moved to China in 2009 that I probably wouldn't hit that goal. It is OK though as goals are not meant to be set in stone, they need to change and be able to work with our lifestyles. So instead when I hit 30, I visited my 37th state of Idaho. ... read more

A quick journal of our journey back to the USA. We left our apartment at 7:30am Sunday morning (China time), took 2 cabs to the Hangzhou train station since the 1st cab driver wouldn't let us put suitcases in the back seat of his car. (3 suitcases, 1 large backpack and 2 small backpacks) Nathan and Pete rode in Cab #2 and Crystal and I rode in Cab #1. We both arrived at the train station about 20 seconds apart so it worked out ok. They took us to our waiting room inside the train station as I think they were both very sad to see us leave. We were able to ride the new train from Hangzhou to Shanghai that travels at 350 KPH= 217.5MPH. The journey used to be 90 minutes and now is ... read more

For those of you who follow our blog you may have realized we haven't posted in awhile. In 2009, when we started this blog we posted many times every week as living in China was such a HUGE difference and everyday was something surprising. We also didn't have access to Facebook so it was our way of sharing our photos and experiences. I guess coming back to China for a 2nd year it has not been such a HUGE difference and everyday is not as shocking as it was last year. We also have a VPN service so we have access to Facebook. Pete and I were talking one night while sitting in our apartment and decided that we are "just living" in China this year. We work, we buy groceries, we cook or should I ... read more

Asia » China » Jiangsu » Suzhou November 14th 2010

It is a fact that whenever something is called the something of something else it’s not, otherwise it would just be known for what it is. Suzhou is famous for its networks of canals, stone bridges, old white washed buildings, and plentiful gardens. There are two times it is recommended to visit, Spring and Fall. The first so that one can see all the blooming flowers in any of the dozens of gardens throughout the city and the later to see the typical fall foliage colors. We were happy with the later since we had been living in Southern California and most recently Southern China and neither of which have any well defined seasons. We headed out to the Hangzhou North Bus Station after Elyse’s last class on Friday afternoon. Suzhou is in the neighboring Jiangsu ... read more
