Our tour guide Dinesh instructed us that we would need to leave for the train station some three hours prior to its departure. The traffic in Delhi is always heavy and unpredictable as to how long the journey will actually take; so better safe than sorry. Arriving at the train station in old town Delhi we were faced with quite a different atmosphere than the stations in China. We’ve seen our fair share of run down sketchy train stations but this one seemed to be unlike any other we’ve encountered. For one there were monkeys running a muck and were likely at any point to try to forcefully take your food. Second, there were no indoor waiting areas so we sat near the train tracks that had a strong stench of nothing good. There were of ... read more

We had a good flight on Kingfisher Airlines including on demand English movies granted they were older movies but it kept us entertained for the 6 hour flight from Hong Kong to Delhi. We exited the airport and got into a cab as we knew it was supposed to be about 400-600 rupees. Once the driver quoted the rate of 785 rupees we knew it was too much and hopped out and found the pre pay police stall which we were quoted 400 rupees. It was around 12:30am and the driver didn’t seem to be sure of exactly where our hotel was but knew the Karol Bagh metro station it was near. I had the sense that he wanted to drop us at the metro but I wasn’t about to have that as it seemed to ... read more

Laura, Pete and I flew from Hangzhou to Shenzhen in order to save money on the "International" flight from Mainland China to HK. When we arrived at the Shenzhen airport we could see lots of construction on expanding the current airport. I also was excited that the subway now was open at the airport so we could take it directly to the Futian Checkpoint and cross into Hong Kong without getting on a bus. I believe the subway ride took us a little over an hour and cost us 8RMB=$1.27. Laura finally would get to experience the highly secured border crossing between Mainland China and HK. Plus she would get to experience HK for herself as she has heard us rave about HK ever since we first went there ourselves in 2009. During our border crossing ... read more

I wanted to share these photos from Laura & Laurence's time in Mainland China with our friends and family as now I have time to update them after our 5 weeks of travel around Hong Kong, India and Southern China. Looking book on our time with Laura and Laurence we are grateful they were able to experience China but sad it was so cold and we didn't have longer to show them more of China.... read more

We have been on the go since 6am on Friday, December 23rd traveling between Hangzhou, Shanghai and Suzhou showing Laurence and Laura what life is like in China and some touristy things of course since is their 1st time to China. We successfully met Laurence at his hotel in Shanghai and found Laura at the correct subway stop and exit after her flight from southern China after her overnight train from Hanoi. A great feat, as neither of them speak Chinese and China isn't easy to get around due to the language barrier, although the Chinese would say differently. It was VERY cold in Shanghai during our 2 night stay which took the fun out of sightseeing but we had sun the whole time, which is a 1st for Pete and I. It seems the few ... read more

Christmas is only 4 days away and we are quickly preparing for the end of the term, guests to arrive, move to a new apartment and leave for 5 weeks of travel. You make ask "How do you have time to write a blog?" Well, I need some time to decompress as these next 10 days will be very busy. We will travel to Shanghai on Friday to meet up with Laurence, Pete's friend traveling from Indianapolis, and Laura, Pete's sister, who has spend the last 2 weeks traveling around Cambodia and Vietnam. This is our first time having guest in China and we are looking forward to it. I hope we can live up to being good hosts in such a different country. I look forward to showing them all the things that are our ... read more

Today, we have been in China for 3 months and sometimes I wonder where the time has gone and other days it seems to not go by quick enough. This last month, we lost my Grandma Mosher at the grand age of 95. She was quite the woman and it brings tears to my eyes as I type this. I have so many great memories of her as she only lived 5 minutes away from us as I grew up. Every time I came home from China, CA or NIU I would go visit her to say hi and catch up on her stories. I learned so much about our family history from her. Grandma loved playing cards, gardening, knitting and making warm blankets for us all. When we were kids we would dress up in ... read more

We realize we haven't been blogging as much as we had the past 2 years living in China. I think part of it is the novelty of living here has worn off and things just aren't as shocking anymore. Don't get me wrong though everyday is still an adventure living here. For example, when we returned from our trip to Singapore and Malaysia and started teaching again we found out on Day 1 of being back that we would have the following 2 days off of work due to the 8th National Disabled Games being held in Hangzhou from October 10-19th. I highly doubt the officials planned this event over the National Day break but that is how information is kept on the totem pole. Higher ranked officials now the plan and the lowest ranked (foreign ... read more

Our International Department of Affairs took us 9 foreign English teachers and 22 international students on a field trip to Wuzhen. It was only an hour bus ride from the college campus where we teach and the international students live. We live about 35-45 minutes from that campus so we had a longer day. We had been warned by 2 previous teachers that these trips can be quite horrid as the Chinese love to travel in tour groups with matching hats, a tour guide waving a flag and speaking into a microphone. We don't like to be paraded around like cattle at big tourist traps within China so we were ready for an adventure to say the least. We went with open minds and enjoyed our day trip. When we arrived we pulled into a parking ... read more
