We arrived back in Singapore on Friday evening and headed to Mary's apartment via the subway with no problems this time. We had taken her extra key with us so when we got to her apartment we could get in, in case she wasn't back from work yet. Once Mary arrived home around 9pm we headed out to watch the laser light show on the Marina. This light show happens every night from the Marina Bay Sands Casino and has a water show below in the marina. We took the budget route of buying cans of Tiger Beer (Singapore's local beer) at 7-11 and watched from the Esplande near the Fullerton Hotel. It was a nice evening to see the show, chat about life abroad and people watch. Saturday, we slept in and hung out until ... read more

As you can tell we have become a little lazy on writing our blogs lately. We took the city bus from our hostel in Melaka to the Sentral Bus Station for only 1 MYR a person=31 cents, a much cheaper option for the 2 of us than the 15 MYR taxi ride into town. The little things you learn along the way. Transportation in Malaysia was quite cheap as we arrived at the bus station 40 minutes early for our bus we were switched onto an earlier bus and given some money back from the bus company. The new ticket was only 9.2MYR=$2.85 per person from Melaka to KL on Wednesday morning. The bus ride was around 2 hrs long to KL. When we arrived in KL we could see a storm approaching and the skies ... read more

We knew coming to Malacca was going to be a slower pace of life and that it was. We spent 2 nights there wondering after the first afternoon what we were going to do. We managed to find enough walking around the UNESCO Heritage Village and Chinatown but wouldn’t recommend more than 2 nights here unless you want a lot of relaxation on your trip. We were able to add to our Asian art collection with a handmade wooden Malay mask. This part of Malaysia was settled by the Dutch and Portuguese, all the red buildings in Malacca were built by the Dutch. This is also the first place we have ever been that is a Muslim country, which means we hear prayers on the speakers across town 5 times per day. Highlights of Malacca -Quiet ... read more

Our trip started as we headed to the Hangzhou airport around 11am. We shared a cab with another teacher at our college, Susanna and her husband Johannes who is from Sweden. Our flight departed on time and routed us through a city called Xiamen where we had to get our check bags and re-check into our international leg of the flight. We were scheduled to arrive in Singapore at 10 pm yet were 45 minutes late as there was turbulent weather throughout the entirety of our flight. We read that the last train left the airport at midnight and were on a much tighter schedule to clear customs and find the right train to the city. A few days earlier Elyse and Susanna went to the Bank of China to exchange RMB for Singapore Dollars. China ... read more

The group of us foreign teachers here at HDU is a great group. We have gone out on bike rides and hikes together since arriving. Last Saturday, five of us left at 6:30am to beat the heat for a ride around the West Lake area and Tea field terraces. The ride ended up being 16 miles long. You never would have found me doing this last year but I am excited for how our lifestyles have changed and we are getting out more. Sunday, three of us went out for another bike ride but decided to keep it flat and easier so we went 10 miles instead. Wednesday, I have a day off in the middle of the week so four of us went for a bike ride along with a hike that I am not ... read more

We arrived safely in China after an eleven hour flight from Seattle to Seoul, Korea and a 90 minute flight from Seoul to Shanghai. Once we arrived we got through customs and received our bags quite quickly. We hit our 1st bump in the road when we called the Howard Johnson hotel to pick us up. I had booked it on the Wyndham Rewards website so we could get mileage for Rapid Rewards, they offered “Free Airport Shuttle” and it was the most reasonable in price and proximity to Pudong Airport. Well it seems the website lied as there was no free shuttle and it would take 40-60 minutes to get there. For those of you who know China it was located near Pudong not Hongqiao the airport on the other side of Shanghai. So we ... read more

After celebrating Jimmy & Cali's wedding and seeing Kris & Kelly we now venture our way down from Northwestern New Hampshire to Connecticut to visit Jay & Melissa. Pete went to high school with Jay and now we get to experience their life on the East Coast in East Lyme, CT. (where Lyme disease was identified) Jay works at Foxwoods Casino where many New Yorker's and Bostonian's drive to gamble since neither of those states have gambling. There are 2 large Vegas style casinos in the middle of small town CT which employee many people in the area and entertain thousands from all around. We wandered around the casino to see all the stores, restaurants and new high end bowling alley where Kim Kardashian recently wore heels to bowl. We ate dinner and headed back to ... read more

We were welcomed into New Hampshire by a State Liquor & Lottery store. You may ask why it is such a big deal but New Hampshire only sells liquor in state run stores and has no sales tax, very similar to Oregon. We had to stop as Pete and Kris had a bet on a NBA game that Kris lost so he owed Pete a bottle of whiskey. Plus the town we were headed to may not offer this so we had to stock up. The traffic from Boston to Sugar Hill was a little more than we had expected and I drove through a crazy rain storm that many drivers pulled off the road but I just slowed my speed down and kept on going. We arrived at Pinestead Lodge and checked in quickly as ... read more

After driving 1,850 miles we ended our west coast tour in Los Angeles, CA. There we meet up with my brothers Rob, Tim, and Mike and my cousin Brian who was accompanied by his fiance Erica. We ate at some fancy Mexican restaurant in the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica. It was an early night as Elyse and I had an early morning flight to Boston. Thank God we arrived a few hours before our flight because LAX is just about one of the worst airports we’ve flown in or out of. If you thought the DMV was inefficient the TSA takes it to a new level. We nearly missed our flight as the security lines channeled down to one line so that everyone could go through the body scanners. I miss the old metal ... read more

Another new town visited for me. After living in California for 6 years and many trips up and down the state I had never been to the Lake Tahoe area. Granted I moved to California to get away from the cold and snow and have only snow skied once in my life. But Jared & Kendra's wedding brought us to Truckee and what a fantastic time we had. This was the first wedding we had attended since our own two ceremonies. Jared & Kendra met in Truckee almost 8 years ago. Jared was working in the culinary field and Kendra was doing the ski bum thing after graduating from UCLA. It all started in a little bar in Truckee and in this same town almost 8 years later we celebrated with them for 4 nights of ... read more
