As you can tell we have become a little lazy on writing our blogs lately.
We took the city bus from our hostel in Melaka to the Sentral Bus Station for only 1 MYR a person=31 cents, a much cheaper option for the 2 of us than the 15 MYR taxi ride into town. The little things you learn along the way. Transportation in Malaysia was quite cheap as we arrived at the bus station 40 minutes early for our bus we were switched onto an earlier bus and given some money back from the bus company. The new ticket was only 9.2MYR=$2.85 per person from Melaka to KL on Wednesday morning. The bus ride was around 2 hrs long to KL.
When we arrived in KL we could see a storm approaching and the skies opened up in a very heavy rain storm. We made it to our hostel without too many bumps and we were very happy. The Rainforest Bed & Breakfast in the Bukit Bintang section of town was quite lovely. We had a soft bed and our own bathroom for 2 nights the cost was around 200 MYR=$65 including breakfast.
We set out on
the town and walked around the KL Tower park and Petronas Towers. Pete took some amazing photos and we actually had dinner at a Lonely Planet suggested restaurant without even knowing it until we got home that night. The food was good and reasonably prices as Malaysia has been more expensive than we had expected.
The next day we did the Hop On/Hop Off tour of KL which didn't come close in comparison to the one we did in Singapore. We like these tours because you get a good idea of the city and can ride around and get off when you like. The full loop took over 2 hours as the traffic congestion is so bad in KL.
While we were in KL Steve Jobs died and we experience how much he has impacted our lives around the world. People from Australia, Europe and Asia were all glued to the TV watching the coverage on CNN. To think 10 years ago there were no IPod's, IPhone's and IPad's. Now during our travels there isn't a country we go to that travelers don't have these items or that the local countries aren't trying to imitate a fake product
just to say they have one also.
My memories of KL a week after we left aren't that lasting so I wouldn't say it is a must see place on our list of travels. In our eyes it was just another large Asian capital city. We were told this before we went there but we haven't experienced Bangkok or Jakarta. It was more developed than Vietnam and Cambodia. It still amazes me though that countries in Asia can build these massive skyscrapers but haven't figured out how to not have open sewage or straight/functioning sidewalks.
The highlights of our stay in KL where seeing the Petronas Towers (tallest building until 2004 when Taipei 101 opened), going to the KL Bird Park, seeing the National Mosque and eating Banana Roti(Indian crepe like dessert with sugar and condensed milk). Malaysia was pretty easy to get around as English was widely spoken in the parts we traveled.
