The entire group of 10 went on a private tour to Giant’s Causeway. Along the way we saw some beautiful countryside and lots of sheep. We went through several small villages along the way. One village named Cushendall is the heart of an annual glens festival (1st week in August). They also have “hurling” games here quite frequently. Another village known as Lockarema (the vanishing lakes) is 1100 feet above sea level. Another small fishing village was Bally Castle which has a rope bridge and as of 2002 there is no more salmon. Finally, arrived at the Giant’s Causeway. Very strange geological formations! The causeway was formed by volcanic action under the sea and what has been created is tall columns of stone which look to be man made, but in reality were formed by the ... read more

Roxie and I toured the Irish countryside by traveling to the Wicklow Hills and visiting Glendalough (the valley of two lakes), which is renowned for its early medieval monastic settlement founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century. The relics which remain are the gateway to the monastery, a very small church, the remains of a larger church (floors & walls), a 98 foot high round tower that was probably used for storage and a place of refuge in times of attack, and a graveyard with tombstones dating back to the 6th century. ... read more

Up around 9 a.m. We were in the North Atlantic and the seas were pretty rough - lots of rocking & rolling. Roxie not feeling well again so she took some Dramamine and rested. I went to breakfast with Judy & Diana and then took my computer to the Explorer Lounge and worked on my logs. As we move closer to land, the seas seem to be calming down. We’re all at the art auction now which should start in a few minutes. Nothing for me today. The frozen marguerites are wonderful so I just ordered one as we wait for the auction to begin. If you’re interested in buying art, the place to do it is on the ships at sea. They have all the known and unknown artists and the prices are typically ½ ... read more

Lazed around all morning and then took the tender (smaller boat- in disasters used as lifeboats) to shore. Took a tour of the City of Edinburg and then Edinburg Castle. They wouldn’t let us take pictures in some places - not sure why they just didn’t say “no flash.” Most museums allow photos. Quite interesting. There is a roadway known as “The Royal Mile” leading up to the castle, which originally housed the peasants and their businesses. Now it is all shops, restaurants & bars. Roxie, Rodger and Joe have Scottish ancestors so they bought items depicting their “colors” or “crests.” Some bought cashmere scarves, clothing and blankets. We had a long, steep, winding road to go to the top. Rodger and a couple of others took a personal ride to the top and back down ... read more

Slept until 9:30 a.m. again - the rocking motion of the ship is wonderful for sleeping well. Then I went for a seaweed wrap and massage. While I was wrapped up like a cocoon I got a foot/ankle (trying to help the swelling) and scalp massage. She used frangipani oil on my scalp so I got that service for free - usually has a price all its own. After I showered got a back massage and I felt better for the rest of the day. Read a while and saw “The Proposal” with Sandra Bullock. Absolutely the funniest movie I have seen in a long time. I would recommend to everyone. Formal night for dinner. ... read more

Europe » Norway » Eastern Norway » Oslo September 24th 2009

Arrived in the rain and fog again, but by 10 a.m. the sun was out and no more rain. We went to the sculpture park (Roger, Roxie and I stayed in the bus - in fact I took a little nap) and ski jump again, but did drive on a few different streets and got a very detailed description of Oslo people and their lifestyle. They are every active and like most Europeans they walk and bike just about everywhere. Cross country walking and skiing are everyday events. Don’t think I saw an overweight Norwegian. We in the U.S. could learn a lot from other countries. We finished up our tour with a trip to the Viking Ship Museum where artifacts from 4 Viking ships were displayed. The earliest from the year 800 something (9th century)! ... read more

Back in Copenhagen this morning; our first Baltic Sea cruise completed. So many memories! St. Petersburg is absolutely amazing and many times it’s hard to express in words what we saw. Russian nobility sure knew how to live the rich and opulent lifestyle. Roxie & I and Judy & Rodger moved all our stuff to our new cabins just a few doors down. We had 4 cabins in a row - Roxie & I, Barb & Gary, Judy & Rodger, Rick and Diana and Joe & Michelle were just across from us on the other side of the ship. We wanted to have both sides covered in case the aura borealis can only be seen on one side or another. After breakfast & moving our stuff, Judy and I got off the ship and got a ... read more

Arrived in the rain and fog, but by 10 a.m. the sun was out and no more rain. We have been so lucky with weather. Roxie and I took a tour which included the old & new town, the Vigeland sculpture park and an open air folk museum. The Vigeland park contains 214 sculptures with more than 758 figures, all modeled in full size by Gustav Vigeland without the assistance of pupils or other artists. He also designed the architectural setting and the layout of the grounds with their expansive lawns and long, straight avenues bordered by maple trees. Then we went to the open air folk museum, which is a recreation of old and new structures representing southern Norway. http://www.norskfolkemuseum.no/default.aspx?epslanguage=en We saw the “Stave Church,” a farmer’s house, storage shed and animal barn, as well ... read more

Judy, Roxie and I met with the “future cruise” planner and pre-booked additional cruises which allows us to put less down and receive ship board credit. Went to a 75% off sale - what a mad house. Stood in line longer to pay than it did to find items I wanted. Worked on my log and at then went to the final art auction. Didn’t buy anything this time. Tonight’s formal night so have to dress up a little more. ... read more
