Met the group around 10 am, got off the ship and caught the hop-on/hop-off bus. Rode 2 lines. The hill town electric tram took us through the old neighborhood with very small streets and old houses. The streets are so small that you have to be careful about opening your front door so a car doesn’t hit it. The blue line bus took us around the new city area which took us past the Monument of the Discoveries and the Jesus sculptures and the Belam Tower. Others sites were the President and Prime Minister’s homes and several large churches. Lots of large malls and what looked to be expensive shopping areas. It was raining so we headed back to the ship around 2:30 or so. A few came back earlier. Later in the day, I played ... read more

Met Barb, Gary and Roxie and we walked into town for a little while – probably not much more than an hour or two as it was very hilly with not much to do, but walk around. Did make it up the first hill to see an old church. The town is built into a mountainside so walking was difficult for a couple of us. Had dinner at our reserved table, which Moises ensured that we have for all 10 of us for the entire cruise. Had drink with Barb & Gary in one of the lounges and then turned in.... read more

Relaxing day at sea today. Slept in till about 11 and went & had lunch. In the afternoon went to the movies and saw “Arbitrage” with Richard Gere, Tim Roth and Susan Sarandon. Quite interesting story about the rich and the financial industry. Went to dinner and Moises surprised Barb with a birthday cake for her 65th birthday. It was his last night on board. Went to the 8:30 show and saw “The MacDonald Brothers,” a duo from Scotland. They sang Scottish, Irish and American pop songs. Was strange when they sang the American pop, they lost their Scottish accents. Very entertaining and thoroughly enjoyed them.... read more

2 ½ hour bus ride to tour D-Day landing beaches in Normandy, France. Those soldiers had a very tough time! They came across the English Chanel and then had very high & steep rocks to climb up before even hitting land. 1ststop was La Pointe du Hoc beach and then Omaha beach. At Omaha Beach 34,000 soldiers landed with casualties of 3,000 which included wounded, MIA and dead. The barricades and bunkers that had been made are still visible. Some of the more agile men worked their way through the bunker caves and said they were quite intricate. Then we went to the St. Laurent Cemetery, which is the American cemetery. 9,870 were buried there, but about 2/3 were returned to the USA at the family’s request. UK requires that soldiers be buried where they die ... read more

Today was our last tourist day in Wales. No set wake up time so when we got ready the guesthouse manager called a cab, which took us to Cardiff Castle as the cab driver didn't know about the tea room we were looking for. Once ensuring we knew where to go, we walked back to Pettigrew Tearooms for breakfast. Roxie had a couple of items with coffee and I had hot chocolate with a crumpet and we both had a Welsh cake. I've come to really like these Welsh cakes (http://www.joyofbaking.com/WelshCakes.html). Yum!! Then we walked back to Cardiff Castle (http://www.cardiffcastle.com/), did a guided tour and then walked around on your own. Had a display of falcons and 3 different types of owls. Got very cold and windy so went in the gift shop and browsed a ... read more

We began the tour with a visit to Britain's most preserved Roman town - Caerleon - "Fort of the Legion". Explored the amphitheater where gladiators fought to their death, the bath house around which much of a Roman soldier's life revolved and tried to visit the National Legionary Museum, which didn’t open until late due to a children’s Halloween program. The gift shop had a small display of artifacts we looked at and then we went next door to St Cadoc Church of Wales first started in the 15th century. We also drove by lots of other Roman ruins – this area was occupied by the Romans for some time. We drove through Caerwent, which was once a thriving market town and saw more evidence of invader occupation 1900 years ago. We then went to some ... read more

Left London on train and arrived in Cardiff last night. Very nice guesthouse - Church's Guesthouse - http://www.churchguesthouse.co.uk/ with a very nice looking young man as the manager who talks a mile a minute. Very attentive to our needs and wants to be sure we're happy. Haven't even paid the bill yet. Guess they do that when we check out Friday. Today we went on a tour "Mines & Mountains." Went down into an old coal mine (Big Pit) 300' into the dark. Had to put on hard hats and head lamps. Damp, wet, dark, slippery and sometimes low beams that you had to bend down to get under. Was definitely an experience, but it's one of those "done that - not again." Then we started driving through "Brecon Beacons National Park" which is 519 miles ... read more

Jones and Thornburg's arrived late last night. Roxie and I met them at 9:30 am and walked to the "tube" (train stn). Went and picked up our London Pass tickets and then got on "The Big Bus" (hop-on/hop-off). 1st stop "The Eye." Fun, fun, fun - saw lots of London and surrounding areas. Then got back on the bus and went to "The Tower of London." This is where brutal torture was done and heads cut off. Two of Henry VIII's wives were killed here and are actually buried in the chapel. My first time in the chapel. Saw the crown jewels - WOW - lots of jewels and gold. Got back on the bus and hit the train back to Earl's Court (closest to the hotel) and ate dinner at The Blackbird (http://blackbirdearlscourt.co.uk/food-and-drink). I had ... read more

I arrived in London around noon local time – 3 hours late. We had issues leaving JFK last night and then once we got close to London we had to circle around for about 15 min. as there was a storm between the plane and London. The sun is out here today, but it may be raining tomorrow – cold and very windy today – low 40’s. At JFK one of the engines was leaking oil so they had to fix that first – then we were ready to leave and a couple wanted off the plane – when they got off, security requires that there bags go with them so we waited for men to go through a plane full of luggage and find 2 suitcases. Elderly man and his wife decide they had waited ... read more

Sad day - we had to say goodbye - even knowing we will see and talk to each other again, it was sad for us to go our separate ways. Had lots of luggage so decided to rent a car and drive home to Tampa. I was home before I would have arrived by plane. Stephanie followed me to return the rental and we went to dinner. Today it's Thursday, 10/15, and I finally got my wash done, went through a month's worth of mail, and still catching up on email. It's back to reality now. I love cruising so much; I wish I was a millionaire so I could stay on the seas more. ... read more
