My first day exploring Door County has been enjoyable. The official visitor guide (which is also available online at www.doorcounty.com) says inside the front cover - One of the Top Ten Vacation Destinations in North America according to Money Magazine. One of the speakers at Grandfather Mountain earlier this month had Door County on his list of must see travel spots in North America as well. So I had extremely high expectations as I set out this morning. Early on I was very under whelmed. I guess with all I heard about this area, I expected to see a magnificent farm, water, beautiful shoreline, unique building or lighthouse around every turn and not knowing what to photograph as everything was going to be spectacular. I spent the day in the northern half of the county ... read more

I “packed” a lot in to today (pun intended)! I visited one of the most storied venues in the NFL - Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Today’s stop was one where I didn’t have to worry about finding a place to park. I figured I could easily maneuver around in the stadium parking lot and I was correct. I learned today they are celebrating 50 years at Lambeau Field this season. I also discovered some other interesting tidbits about my favorite NFL team. The Packers are the only team in professional sports owned by a community and operated as a nonprofit organization. I also learned that Earl Lambeau was the founder, VP, head coach and player. He coached for 31 years and won 6 championships. It was a fun time taking a tour of ... read more

This has been a marvelous evening. I FINALLY had an “RV” evening. By that I mean after Chessy and I took a little stroll along the lake (no I didn’t let her take a swim), I pulled out my portable gas grill and cooked dinner. After a hot day it was cooling off nicely, so I got Chessy’s outdoor leash, attached it to the picnic table and ate dinner outside. I then pulled out my folding chair, relaxed and read the USA Today I purchased this morning as I was departing Two Harbors. The icing on the cake was leisurely reviewing the some of the Wisconsin travel material I had received prior to my departure. I even mapped out my exact route to the Door County Peninsula for tomorrow. We sat outside for about an ... read more

Sunday June 24th - Two Harbors, MN I thought I was going to enter an update from the motel where our workshop was held after we wrapped up. But for some reason the internet connection has been challenging since I arrived in Minnesota. What a great week here in Minnesota. Wish I had planned on another week here. Can’t even begin to recap all the fun things I’ve seen, done, and learned. The weather the first days here was cool (almost nippy at times) and windy. The last two days have been almost hot by comparison. I drove down to Duluth after we finished and it was HOT. I felt like I was in a big city after having been here along the North Shore where towns are few and far between and the population ... read more

Another beautiful day here along the North Shore of Lake Superior. 3:35 came early and the best photo op seemed to be as we were driving to Gooseberry Falls State Park about 40 minutes BEFORE sunrise. The lake was awash in the pastel colors you see before sunrise. But there were no overlooks to stop and capture that moment. We spent a little over an hour along the lake shore during sunrise and then went up along the falls for another couple of hours. The time just flew by. On the way back into town, one of our classmates (who lives here in Two Harbors) took two of us to a Pileated Woodpecker’s nest. What a cool experience. I saw two babies (I believe they are called fledglings as they are about to fly). I ... read more

I had a laid back day and did a little sightseeing. I first went down to the harbor and saw a cargo ship being loaded. While driving through town, a deer came walking around the corner of the street on the sidewalk. Of course my camera was in the back of the Jeep! I turned around and captured her but not with houses in the background. I then drove up to Gooseberry Falls (where we are going for sunrise tomorrow along the lake and then the falls later) and to Split Rock Lighthouse - probably the most photographed location on the North Shore. The beginning of the workshop was good, but a 4:15 departure tomorrow for sunrise will be early so I’m going to upload this and call it a night. ... read more

Hello from the North Shore of Lake Superior. What a glorious day today. After the rain on Monday, Tuesday dawned sunny and 60 degrees. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky as we departed Story City, IA. The countryside is absolutely beautiful. The crystal blue sky contrasted with the dark rich green of corn as far as the eyes could see. Dotted along the corn, soybeans, and wheat fields were farmhouses and barns decked out in their red and white splendor. Silos would appear on the horizon as silent sentinels standing watch. I also passed by 3 or 4 wind farms. As we headed north the winds picked up considerably. The sky remained a rich blue with occasional streaks of icy cirrus clouds and later puffy cotton like clouds rolled by. The wind really rocked ... read more

Hello from Iowa, Two leisurely days on the road from Tulsa. Sunday I discovered I would be driving right by “The Little House on the Prairie” where Laura Ingalls Wilder lived for a year. So I took the couple of mile detour to check it out. The gift shop/museum didn’t open until the afternoon so I just wandered about for a few minutes. I know the log cabin is a replica of the one they lived in. I’ve not had the opportunity to research the authenticity of the other buildings located at the sight. Here's a link to the website. http://www.littlehouseontheprairie.com Monday I encountered quite a bit of rain, heavy at times, but otherwise the drive was uneventful. I arrived in Story City, IA about 5:30. I had an enjoyable visit in Atchison, KS touring ... read more

The Mother Road North America » United States » Oklahoma » Tulsa By Cruzn4Photos June 16th 2007How about taking a little visual trip down memory lane with me. I spent the day getting my kicks on Route 66. I started in Tulsa and drove down to Kellyville stopping at the Hickory House Bar-B-Que in Sapulpa for lunch. I then hopped on the turnpike (I-44) and drove northeast to Vinita. From there I got back on the Mother Road and took it back down to Tulsa stopping along the way. The images will tell the story from today. Enjoy! ... read more

Tonight was a somewhat anti-climatic ending to the day. Overall it was a good program and I’m glad I was able to attend. Part of it may simply be the pace I’ve kept the past few days and exhaustion setting in. The car did not “age” well during its 50 years underground. As I sort of thought all along and especially today after seeing it on the trailer up close, it is severely rusted. Basically nothing that was placed in the vehicle survived. The true time capsule - which was steel and welded shut - did quite well. The contents were in very good shape. I guess the most disappointing part for me was the way they treated the American Flag. A flag that had flown over the Capital was buried in the time capsule. ... read more
