The Ice at Pleneau Bay

Little bits of magic!
Flying on the open deck, southern winter already approaching while the rest of the south still basks in summer, observing the antics of both questionable human behavior and of the only native terrestrial resident of Antarctica, and getting to cross the fabled Drake passage over and over and up and down again. Magical life you lead!

Emperors on Sea Ice

Anticipating Antarctica
It is one of those places that once you've been once is not enough and when you have been you long to go. I hope to get there again, sooner than later. Keep the blogs coming.

Antarctic Adventures
As usual, thanks so much for sharing such a unique experience. The penguins are adorable, but being surrounded by giant, playful humpback whales is incredible. Congrats on having a smooth Drake crossing--you deserve it after all the wild ones. You really do have the best job in the world!

The Two Towers
Not really Tolkienesque but stunning that Nature would exhibit them this way. Love that the flora of this harsh landscape can move you in such a way. Beautiful walk and pics in the gardens of Greenland. Thanks Dave.

Dryas at Botanikerbugt

Wild, Weird and Wonderful!
Fantastic shapes of the icebergs and dryas, and what an amazing life the natives live. Months of winter darkness and living underground then--everything is so different! Not many trees, so I wonder if they use musk-ox dung for fires in that freezing land? How reassuring that there are still people living in traditional ways--I do hope the sea ice holds, so their way of life, as well as that of the walrus and polar bears can continue.

Arctic Iceland
I hope you get the opportunity to venture on the Island of Surtsey Disco Dave. I've climbed Anak Krakatoa that rose from the sea in the 1930s and is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. I can vouch for the thrill of seeing life eeking a footprint on that ever growing island sending smoke signals. As the Island of Surtsey rose from the sea in 1963 I can feel your awe. What shape is it and is it an an active volcano as well?
30th September 2015

What a great Question!
I love that question - what shape is the island? It is roundish when viewed from above, but looks like a craggy slope when viewed from the side. The island is not visually remarkable - but its story is. It is still active, although not a lot has been happening for a couple of decades. It really is a magical place - to see land so new on a planet so old is captivating.
