The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades
While I was working in Antarctica our theme song was from Timbuk3....The future's so bright I've gotta wear shades. Loved it. So this blog brought back pleasant memories. One of my friends lost an expensive bracelet. I was out cross country skiing and found it. What is wrong with you? You are a world traveler and you need to get your mind right about the travel thing. Seriously! We love, love, love hanging out in airports, people watching, reading, writing blogs, wandering. Our jobs are tough and we are tied to phones and beepers so when we are in an airport we don't have to deal with any of that . Guess our perspective is different. Airport = new adventure. Get your mind right my friend. Don't fight it.

Not that bad really
Get a grip indeed! Airports aren't that bad. It's just I always seem to be hauling three bags and gear for other folks too. Often tight connections... I think it's the anticipation of the longhauls that daunt me. Once I'm on the plane it's not that bad.. Always good to hear from you guys.

Fantastic Voyage
I would love to take this trip.

Canadian Artic
We've traveled to some pricey places but this one sounds even higher. Thanks again for going where few go and let us have a look at what is going on in the frozen tundra of Canada. Amazingly beautiful.

Amazingly beautiful
Thanks for the many comments you've left throughout the seasons! The arctic does have a special place in my heart - I am pleased that you enjoy the blogs about this amazing region.

Fox

Fabulous wildlife!
Glad you were able to stay with a friend in that hyper-remote, expensive, and exotic island. And the last voyage of the season, so back home to hang with polar bears or down to the ends of my continent and Antarctic--such fabulous choices!

Officially bi-polar
Bears for now but penguins in a couple of weeks... That makes me bi-polar I think? It's nice to be home even if it's just for a few weeks.

Greenland
This is a location we both loved and long to go back to! What a great blog. Thanks for sharing. I don't like licorice so I won't try that ice cream...but I'm sure they have others I would like. MJ

Nunavut
Disco Dave chasing the kid with the radio. Imagine the thrill of the chase...both blowing steam in a frigid wasteland. Evocative image to be sure.

Ice-choked

An icy green(land) adventure!
Ice, two miles thick and a glacier moving 20 meters a day--rather as mind blowing as licorice ice cream! I visited fiords in Alaska and Patagonia that were so chocked with icebergs that they were no longer navigable--in both, global warming was causing additional calving to take place. Good for Lisa for portraying traditional life! I love dog sleds, but I wonder if sadly, the Inuit use more snow mobiles these days?

Off the beaten track Canada
Untouched, silent and complete....sets the setting. Whale blubber and walrus...you make it sound so appealing. The world looks different from the water. Always good to have land and sea vision. Plenty of contrast and views. I laughed as you described isolated communities..... I'm currently working in LA so my idea of isolated is different from yours. MJ

Fogbow

The dead dub made me sad but it is the way of nature.
Wow, this is a fantastic photo. I'm always excited by the world you are sharing with us. The arctic fall has arrived..... I would think the summer lasted a day or two. I experienced the never setting sun when working in Antarctica. It is an experience. The wildlife looks amazing. I love the raw nature that you have described.

Musk Oxen

Peace, quiet and sights rarely seen!
Magical journey--witnessing the extremes of the natural cycles hidden from city dwellers--sun and moon, life and death, musk oxen and polar bears. Your camping in the Arctic sounded extreme (though your cat duvet was clearly the best), until I saw though that brekkie with tropical treats. I see how you thrived, but how did those Thules manage it? I'm off to wifi-less towns in the Bolivian Andes for a bit. I'll have to catch up later! Thanks for sharing your unique explorations!

Exposure to a hostile environment
"The silence and emptiness was overwhelming"....your word pictures say it all...."etched on the headstones" ..... sounds like a good place to toast, even if it is with water. Thanks for giving this spot a moment of silent contemplation. Historical events do open our hearts, minds and lives. MJ

The Terror remains lost...
Personally, I'd never want to set sail on a ship named Terror--what were they thinking? I've a friend from Uruguay whose older brother was on that rugby team lost in the Andes who survived through cannibalism. I guess you do what you have to do.

Beechey Sea cliffs

Desolate, dark and freezing
Hard to really wrap my head around how formidable it is up there, and how awful must have been the last days of these men. Curious that the bones of the uninterred were never found since it seems unlikely that wolves or other carnivores would be up there.

Beechey Sea cliffs

bones
Hey Tara. There were a few bones found on King William Island of some of the crew. The three crew buried on Beechey died on the ship not on the island - Beechey was where they were buried. Many of the human bones that were found on King William had been cut by knives, suggesting cannibalism. The HMS Erebus was discovered two years ago in shallow water in an undisclosed location in the Arctic, there were several bodies and many clues aboard. The Terror remains lost.
