The Best Job in the World!
Exploring the rarely-visited ends of the earth, climbing extinct volcanoes and islands and getting paid for it--not bad. How exciting to be in the presence of both the ancient, the extinct Great Auks, and the new, the newly plant-populating island of Surtsey. Amazing that people live in some of those tiny, isolated villages, and I wonder if young people stay or not. Seems wise to have some Hidden People around, so they're not so alone.

Chile reflections
Thanks for sharing Crannie and Dave. I think this was one of my favourite blogs - from the history, poetry, art, food it made me much wiser, richer and fulfilled... with the reflections about being home, it made me more thankful for what I have .... and yet strangely, conversely nostalgic for the freedom of the simplistic sparseness of being on the road. Thanks People. xoPS

Chili reflections
Thanks, Pammie! We are really trying to focus good writing these days! We both felt that it was a great blog this time as well. Much of the greatness of the blog was the inspiration we were blessed with. Your comment was also well written and quite poetic!

Happy endings and embracing home
Glad you enjoyed the foods of Santiago. "We adapt to what is in front of us for survival" I'd love to come see your beluga whales....and will someday. There is a lot to be said for clean sheets and a warm shower. Loved following your adventures. Now ready to see the polar bear blogs and northern lights that will be just around the corner.

Happy endings
Thanks, D and M for following us. Always a pleasure to read your comments! We were going to do some kayaking with the belugas tonight, but the bugs are so bad, we decided not to. Lots of rain has made us a mosquito haven. Hopefully their short lifespans allow us to do some kayaking in the weeks to come. Cheers! Faithful bloggers!

Fabulous last blog from the south!
I'm so glad you liked Santiago! Brilliant to get to know Neruda--his poetry of the sea, love and human/nature rights is so fab--thanks for including some. You'll have to return to visit his other two wild houses in Valparaiso and Isla Negra. The Museum of Memories and Human Rights is one of the best I've seen, and you showed its work so well.Unfortuntely, the coup was backed by the pig government of my country, and I wish everyone would correlate our 9/11 with the one we caused in Chile. And then, markets and life on the road. For the last five years, I've been buying my groceries in those wonderful markets where in each town, I have my fave fruit, veg, cheese and olive ladies (almost always women) with whom I chat. I'm sure in your little hometown, you have that community in your stores--hard to just run in and out. How lovely that you're home with all those amenities that people take for granted. Wow--hot water, drinking water from a tap, old friends--I'm so happy you are enjoying these luxuries before you next big adventure! While you're home, I'd love to read a blog on your exotic hometown, you polar bears!

Fabulous last blog
Hi Tara! We love hearing from you! I miss the markets already, and the freshness and wonderful tastes. Living in the sub-arctic, things are not as fresh as they travel much farther. We have some older blogs of the belugas and bears, if you did not know already. Feel free to rummage into our older entries! The beluga photos we have published already are the best we've taken so far!

Politics
Politics seemed to be involved even on isolated remote islands and that breaks my heart. Sounds like we'd better get there sooner than later. This is an amazing island. So glad you shared it with us. Beautiful.

Seeing it all
You really are taking the time to get out and embrace every opportunity.

Prickly and pretty

Castor bean plant
Beautiful photo of the castor bean plant that we have in CA and here in lowland Peru. The seeds are highly poisonous, but are the source of castor oil.

Rano Raraku

Isolated wonders of the world!
From the freezing Antarctic and Manitoba to the arid Atacama to subtropical Easter Island--you two certainly choose extreme, exotic places! What a great visit filled with the mystery of the place--how wonderful that you had Paul to explain some of the theories. Glad too, to hear that you stayed in a wooden house surrounded by trees because when the Europeans arrived, the island had been deforested. Since the trees have been reborn, hopefully, the horse grass will be controlled, and the Rapa Nui people will be able to preserve their heritage for the future.

Incredible
GREAT pix and thanks for sharing your visit to this very remote, fascinating and mysterious island. I am beginning to think you two are on a mission to visit everyplace on earth. You are off to a great start.

Arica

Excellent adventures and great photos!
I love the way you two really explore--climbing up to get overviews of towns and valleys, biking around to get the close perspective and to have that otherworldly Valle de la Luna to yourselves. Good thing your Andean blood was supercharged down here at the very hot sea level. I was just in Arica this weekend, and I fried as I climbed El Morro--quite a change from your usual polar climate! Looking forward to your next adventures!

Desert Biking

Desert Biking
Gotta admire the tough souls on bikes in the Atacama. We saw them suffer the climbs in February...some not getting off to push up the steep hills...possibly 'cause we were watching! Gotta admire you if you were such hardy souls albeit a couple of months later. Love this pic...the scenery around there is stunning.

Llama on a Trail
I can't imagine how cold your cabin was at night. It is always good to keep a close eye and a bit of distance on those llamas. As you say they have their own agenda. Your hiking and the thermal pool sounds great.

How to pass a Llama on a trail
Thanks for the laugh guys, and as always a pleasure to read about your adventures. Thanks for letting us all know where you are, how you are doing and that you are still ticking and tickling our funny bones. Miss yous lots, keep on trecking, love Pammie :)

Titicaca

Wise adventurers!
How fabulous that you spent several days exploring my beloved huff and puff Isla del Sol and its many trails, treasures and tranquility! And what a way to get to Chile--certainly the road less traveled. On my next exit from Bolivia to Chile, I had been planning to go through Park Lauca, but this stop off in Sajama Park sounds fabulous--I may follow your footsteps, intrepid explorers. However, I must admit I chuckled hearing you polar explorers talk of the (very real) cold in Bolivia. Enjoy your return to the land of polar bears, Churchill, Canada.

The very real cold in Bolivia...
Hi Tara! Hee hee. Yes, indeed! We are so used to having our specialized warm clothes and heated houses in Canada, that when confronted with the same temps in Bolivia, without our special clothes and heated housing, the challenge becomes apparent! We love hearing from you as always! Theresa :)

The Llama Incident

Don't pass a cow on a trail.
Wise Teresa letting the llama pass while I was kicked down a cliff by a cow. A couple of months ago, I was on my daily walk in the mountains behind Arequipa when I tried to pass cows grazing on a narrow, 2/3 meter trail (steep sides and no place to jump off to let them pass as I usually do). The cow didn't want to share the trail and kicked me down the cliff. I lost consciousness for 1/2 hour, lost my new glasses, stumbled a couple of hours back to town and ended up with massive casts on both arms, and I'm still in a sling. So glad your llama passed you without incident! I'll not try passing a cow again.

The Llama Incident

Dangerous wildlife
Wow! That's quite the story about the cow Tara! Glad you're OK! We had a friend who hiked the Colca Canyon a couple of years ago and he got squashed between a donkey and a cactus on the trail. He ended up with only a few scratches and a funny story! Next time you should just MOOve out the way!

Beautiful
Thanks for your story and wonderful pictures of this very remote area. Gorgeous and fascinating.

Shower time.
I have laughed out loud to myself imagining this shower carry on. So funny. The rhinos must have managed.

Thanks to the country's jungle, there is wonderful chocolate, and some pretty good stuff here in Peru, too! Potosi and La Paz have now prepared you for Copacabana and Cusco--enjoy your high-altitude adventures!
