Our last day in Roatan was another chilled out yet busy day. We began by swimming through another run. We then sat around for the morning recovering but as you have probably gathered this is not a bad spot to do nothing. We were very much looking forward to the afternoon as we were booked on for a dive which is, after all, what the island is famous for. We both have dived in many locations around the world but this is definitely the clearest water we have been in. There are as many dive sites as you have days to dive. Within a few minutes from leaving the Coconut Dive shop we were off the boat and into the water. Talking to some others that had dived multiple times on the island, this site held ... read more

Except for a very sweaty and slow run yesterday morning, life is pretty much grinding away on first gear. We are very chilled and relaxed here. We have spent many hours lying in the crystal clear shallows of the Caribbean. Today we decided to explore the island a little further so we hired a scooter. Leanne taking her spot at the back and warming up her arm for a day of slow down whacks and Matt was very pleased to find a 150cc scooter. Although the island is small it is still a decent size as we found out after travelling over 30km to the other side where we were still not quite at the other side. The island is quite hilly and you get some great views of the coral reef and blue waters as ... read more

Crossing Honduras was another slightly drawn out process with many of the usual bus frustrations and changes. We were extremely glad to finally reach the Carribean Coast but as it was late at night we just grabbed dinner and a drink and headed to bed. We still hadn't decided if we were going to sample the many tour activities from La Ceiba or head to the true Carribean paradise, the Bay Islands. By morning it was an unanimous decision, we were heading on the first of the 2 ferries to Roatan Island for some sun, sand and sea. The ferry ride over was on an impressive and large catamaran. Although it travels at tremendous speed it still takes an hour and a half. With the choppy sea the vomit bags were on high demand. Nurse Leanne ... read more

We found that Tortuga Surf Lodge was a great choice. We met the owner Roberto last night who was a very interesting and friendly guy. As you would expect he is surfing mad but after having a few beers with him and watching him in a surf video we realized there was more to him than just surfing. He explained the whole history both political and geographical and it was obvious this place was run more out of love of surfing than a business venture. For a tiny country El Salvador has about 10 murders per day (mostly gang related) which makes it one of the most violent countries in the world. Although you don’t see this first hand (hopefully) it is easy to believe just by looking at the number of people carrying arms. So ... read more

Finally we are at the beach and within 5 minutes of arriving at our beach side surf lodge we were in the water ducking under the waves. Its about 30 degrees here, very humid and much to our delight it seems to only rain in the middle of the night. The sea is like a warm bath which means you don't need to hurry out but we are lucky enough to have a refreshing pool with ocean views at our lodge. The village we are staying in is called El Tunco which pretty much merges into El Sunzal. This is a famous coast for its surf and although the waves are still powerful, we are lucky its small enough for us beginners to get out. Rainy season offers the best surf here. As we are near ... read more

We found another one of Guatemalas not so secret treasures, Lago Atitlan. As we arrived in our minívan we came over the hill to look down upon a large beautiful lake surrounded by volcanoes and much vegetation. Panajachel is the largest town around the lake and this is where we were dropped off. Although this was nice enough we had read about another place called San Marcos, a town on the other side of the lake where we had decided to base ourselves. We soon discovered there were 3 prices on boats around here and because we were neither locals nor long termers we forked over our tourist cash. San Marcos is a lovely little village with a small wooden jetty sticking out from the reeds growing on the lake shore. We had read that this ... read more

Just our luck that the directo shuttle didn´t have the numbers to run to Antigua. So we were up at 5.30 to get the 6am shuttle to Coban. Getting up when the shuttle is due only assures you have a seat, so after an hour looping around the village we finally had enough people to leave. This hour wasn´t boring as we learnt a new Guatemalan game of which we think we were in a winning team. This game goes by the name of "How Many People can you fit in a Minivan" and by the time we had left there were people on people, people standing and even people hanging out the window (sorry no room for pics. You will just have to imagine). We didn´t think we were badly off having the side of ... read more

Back to internet so time for an update on whats been happening. Leaving Flores our 5 hour directo bus turned out to be anything but. After 5 hours we pulled into a larger than expected town but were pleased to finally be there. You can imagine our surprise when we suddenly realized we had sailed 1.5hrs past our turn off in order to drop half the collectivo (minibus) off. Just to add to our smiles and head shaking the driver dropped us in a car park outside a shopping mall while we waited for him to pop home for lunch his wife had cooked. Finally after 9 hours we arrived in Lanquin just in time for the evening down pour. Unfortunately our bags rode on the roof and so our room resembled a Chinese laundry as ... read more

We left Mexico with a long slow drive to the border. Roads aren't too bad here but when they have speed bumps at every village that are only a couple of Kms apart, it is quite a long drive. Our trip seemed to incur multiple additional costs which left us a bit annoyed and our driver was particularly rude. To cross into Guatemala we had to take a boat ride in a long dug out canoe for 30mins up the Rio Usumacinta. Our bus driver in Guatemala couldn't have been more different than the one we had left in Mexico. He was Guatemalan and had perfect English with a strong American accent and couldn't have been more helpful. We were heading to Flores which is a small island sitting in the middle of Lago (lake) de ... read more

We learned a quick lesson today that in central America your hotel need not have a shower as at this time of year nature is quite capable of providing one for you. We got off our bus and realised it was definitely air conditioned, a heat wave hit us as we exited in the small town of Palenque. We have dropped down in altitude now from Mexico city and San Cristobal de las Casas and finally Leanne feels at home in the stinky hot humid heat. Palenque is a small town with not much happening but set on the outskirts is the picturesque and very fascinating Palenque ruins. These ruins are an ancient Mayan city dating back from 100 BC to 900 AD and lost to the jungle for almost 1000 years. With only the ruins ... read more
