As the women lay in bed, the men got up and went to work. It was now Leannes US birthday and she was seeing how far she could stretch this. Today we were heading back into the park to the very remote shores of Bowman Lake to camp and kayak. So Joe and Matt carefully loaded the 4 sea kayaks onto the roof of the truck and with 4 strong coffees in hand we headed along the long and very bumpy, dusty road to Bowman Lake. We made several stops along the way to check that neither the truck roof or the kayaks had decided to leave us. An extra stop was added in at Polebridge, a town of 2 buildings, a pub and a general store with the most amazing bakery. To keep tradition alive ... read more

After a night of gasping for fresh air through our thick fly screen, we awoke to hear the sound of pouring rain so our early start was slightly delayed for a small sleep in. Today our plan was to hike up to Iceberg Lake. This trail had only opened the day before after being closed due to numerous sighted bears. After a quick breakfast the weather looked like it was turning for the better. We headed off through very dense forest with the lovely smell of fresh rain on pine. There were plenty of people on the track jingling bells and making noise, so we were not at all concerned about bumping into Yogi or BooBoo. There was not as much wildlife on this walk as yesterdays but we did bump into a timid coyote that ... read more

A 6.30am start as we had a 5 hour drive ahead and Sarah wanted us to get to Glacier National Park in time for an evening hike. No time to rest in Montana. Too much to see! The drive up was awesome. Crossing the state we could see how unpopulated Montana is. The farmers were in the middle of hay making mode which created a very picturesque setting of rows of round hay stacks dotted around the paddocks, and always with a backdrop of mountains in the distance. You can never escape wildlife in Montana and even surrounded by farms there were plenty of wild deer to be spotted. We were to stay in the middle of Glacier National Park at an area called Many Glacier. So we got to our park run motel where we ... read more

DAY 4- Although we had other offers we opted for taking the truck and hiking on our own today. The drive wasn't too long and, as like everything around here, it was incredible beautiful. The track was once again through pine forest along side a stream and we gradually wound up to 3000m where Emerald Lake sat surrounded by patches of snow. Very beautiful and peaceful as we sat for a while watching a couple of fly fisherman. Feeling good we decided to continue for another mile up to the next lake called Heather Lake where we sat and had some lunch. Our hike back down was quick as we passed a few mountain bikers working their way up the rocky track. Leanne was startled at one stage when Matt could hear a large animal in ... read more

DAY 1- After a little lie in then relaxing in the magical Bozeman retreat garden, we set off to the Bridger Ranges. Although the ranges were slightly hazy due to bush fires in California we could still see the local beauty. Some mountains still had a little snow on them in which crazy skiers hunt down for that 10-20m summer ski run. After about 45min drive through beautiful pine forest, we reach our destination Sacagawea in which we were going to hike to the top of. So with hiking shoes on, we set off upwards through Alpine Pine forest, past patches of snow, streams and wildflowers of many colours, above the tree line, along a gusty ridge and then straight up for another 20mins or so. The views from the top were amazing, although we were ... read more

We have been in Montana a few days now and although it may seem like a poor excuse but we have been kept busy hiking, biking and running in the wilderness by the best hosts you could ever imagine. So lets go back to the beginning and get our blogs up to date. We arrived in America with the typical serious and rather unfriendly welcome from the US immigration. Matt had a rather interesting conversation that almost even resulted in being given a smile. Imigration officer (IO)-"Mr Codd, You say you live in Australia but you are a resident of NZ. This is not right." Matt-"Its a long story but i am a resident of NZ and I do intend to live in Australia." IO-"Mr Codd, this is a simple question. All we need to know ... read more

Wanting to move closer to our destination Cancun and see another place, we moved 1 hour up the Yucatan to the beautiful although tourist populated Playa Del Carman. This was quite a cheesy touristy hang out with hundreds of Souvenir shops, people hassling you to buy their stuff, and 100's of American tourists. But this place was very easy. We found a great deal on a hotel 50m from the beach. There were plenty of good cheap restaurants and bars. We spent 2 days here rolling between the beach and the water before we had to make our way to Cancun to catch our flight and end our Central American adventure. This leg will take us to the magical state of Montana to visit Sarah and Joe (sister and brother-in-law). It will be strange seeing family ... read more

We must be honest, we stopped at Tulum for the beach but it is also home to another famous Mayan ruin. So we decided although we had seen our share of Mayan ruins we would definitely check this last one out. Tulum is a funny kind of place being a very small, almost one street town. The beach is about 4-5km away and is really just a long road set almost out of site of the beach with small beach huts and resorts very spread out over 10kms with the ruins lying at one end. The Yucatan Peninsula in some ways is a small slice of America, so with spring break arriving, places get booked out which is something we are not used to i.e. planning ahead! So yesterday when we arrived late into town we ... read more

We awoke at 4.30am to the trusted and familiar alarm tune and although the trip went smoothly, various stops and delays meant it was lunch time before we were stepping off the water taxi and onto another tropical paradise, Belizes Caye Caulker. Caye Caulker is very tiny island a couple of blocks wide and sits right in the middle of the 2nd largest coral reef in the world. As Belize is probably the most expensive place in Central America and we were in no hurry, we spent a bit of time finding our accommodation which was basic but all we needed. Its not hard to guess that snorkeling , diving and fishing were on offer here through out the island and after quite a bit of thought into which company and which trip we would go ... read more

With a border crossing and several changes between buses collectivos, taxis and boats all went to plan and we arrived in Livingston. We just needed to massage our backs after travelling in a 10 seater dinghy on one of the bumpiest boats rides we have had! The backpackers we had chosen was Casa de la Iguana and this was run by the polar opposite of our last backpackers. Rusty was an English guy who was so layed back he needed a hammock to support him. He was solely interested in showing people a good time and it was obvious to see how you could get stuck here. The backpackers was a series of small wooden huts on stilts and our room had a hammock swung inside. The backpackers also had the cutest baby raccoon that Leanne ... read more
