We arrived in Denmark in the morning. The whole country of Denmark is very flat. Apparently, the average elevation is just a little above sea level. Sadly, Claire is still in covid jail so I had to tour on my own and take pictures for both of us. Our guide was a retired school teacher who was very knowledgeable. We started at the fountain which was supposed to put on a show at 3:00. I went out after I returned from the excursion to catch it, but there was nothing to catch. We went to the old castle and stood in the courtyard. The outside is painted all white, however the courtyard side of all of the buildings are half timbered. There was a dungeon in the inside corner. The buildings are being used by the ... read more

Today I (Susan) was released from my quarantine to go on excursions and the parts of the boat outside my room! Of course, I was masked the entire time I was out. I certainly miss doing things with my sister, but I headed out anyway to take pictures for both of us. We drove around Oslo where I was able to get a few pictures from the moving bus of the fortress and the parliament. Oslo has some beautiful architecture in the old part of the city. The rest of the city is much more modern. Norway, once a poor country, is now a very rich country. They do many exceptional things for their citizens including almost an entire year of fully paid parental leave for each child. They want to grow their population since it ... read more

Today we were not getting into port in Oslo until noon, so no alarm today. The nurse came by and took vitals and all was well with both of us. They tested Susan to see if she can get out of quarantine. We watched as the ship came down the fjord. This fjord doesn’t have the high mountains like before. Susan said it looked like a cruise on Lake James. We got to Oslo around noon and luckily, we docked again on the starboard side. Today was like yesterday, food, movies, reading, email,… Just boring. Susan’s results were supposed to be back around 4, but no call. She called down to the medical center after it opened and they said the Dr would call her when he had time. Around 5:45, she got the call. They ... read more

So, what is it like in quarantine? First, you set your alarm an hour before going into port so you can see some of the scenery from your balcony. You pray the ship docks on the starboard side so that you can see into the city. Yeah, it did today. (Well really yesterday) One of the nurses comes and takes vitals in the morning. Then, you start your routine of room service, movies, reading, checking news and emails… for me a nap was also needed. (thank you Cathy for suggesting- In an Instance). After that Susan and I message back and forth and call on the ships phone. Yep, that is our day. Susan tries to do steps around her room. I don’t have a ton of energy. Then about 6, the DR calls to check ... read more

Well today started out good for me. I woke up in my separate room, they didn’t want me in the room with Susan. I do miss her though. My room is only a couple of rooms away from Susan and we can wave to each other on the balcony. I first headed to medical for my PCR test, then took off. I masked up and headed to the bus for the waterfall and catamaran excursion that we paid for. Susan’s excursion is being refunded. On the way up to the waterfall, the guide kept saying, you might not see it and we don’t have time to wait for the sun to burn off the fog. What??? We paid a lot of money for this. Well, when the bus arrived, it was still a bit foggy but ... read more

Well today is not what we expected. Susan woke up not feeling great so decided it was time to take a covid test. Boy it pop’d up positive too quickly. We both put on masks and I opened the door to the deck. Then I called the front desk and told them. They said medical would be contacting us shortly, Well,…. Medical opened an hour later and I called and they had not heard anything from the front desk. They asked us to show up at 9. We did and they did a rapid test on us both, Susan – positive, me – negative. They then did a PCR test for us both. Susan is quarantined in the room, I’m free to go about as long as I’m masked. I leave to go for a long ... read more

We started bright and early and drove to the National Park. This park is a UNESCO world heritage site, and is the place of the first parliament in Iceland more than 800 years ago. For several hundred years the delegates, their families, and support community would meet for about two weeks in the summer. They camped and fished in the lake. The lake happens to be in the rift valley where the American plate and the European plate are constantly pulling apart from each other. The lake formed when the part in between sank, and is the largest lake in Iceland. The earliest settler in Iceland was said to have arrived in 870. Man it was windy today, serious wind, the kind that is hard to stand up in. Our bus traveled from the American plate ... read more

Most people don't need air conditioning in Iceland, and normally we wouldn't either, but our room is hot even with the windows open and the 50 degree air blowing in. And yes, we checked to make sure the heat was not on. Anyway, it made for a hot night's sleep. We headed out in the morning to the spectacular Blue Lagoon. There we donned our swimsuits and joined in the fun. The water is hot water from the ground and is full of minerals and sicilia. It is very milky looking. We made our way to the bar in the lagoon where we were able to get a free sparkling wine. It was relaxing and beautiful. We came back for lunch and then toured a museum of some of the oldest houses in Iceland. They were ... read more

After getting no sleep on the overnight direct flight from Raleigh, we finally landed in Reykjavík. The five minute border patrol took one hour, they needed to make a new sign. We boarded a bus for the hour-long ride to the hotel where we met four or five other buses from other cruise lines arriving at the same time. What a mess! After a quick breakfast we checked in and took a short rest. However, we don't like wasting even a minute of a vacation, so we headed out to see Reykjavík on foot. We walked the harbor and then headed to the shopping district which had some quaint, Icelandic architecture. In the midst of all of the nice shops was a "Phallus Museum". Needless to say, you don't have to think very hard to realize ... read more

Europe » Germany » North Rhine-Westphalia » Dortmund November 22nd 2021

Our last day, so sad. We got up early so that we could do the 3 hour drive to Dortmund. Dennis had bought us tickets to the soccer game. Dortmund is supposed to be the 2ndbest team in Germany and tickets are typically impossible to come by BUT, with Covid and the requirement of a vaccine passport to enter, tickets were available. We got to Dortmund way before the game so we ventured into town to visit their Christmas market. It was similar to the one in Bremen that we visited the other day. We then headed to the game so that we could find parking. It still was a challenge to find a place to park. We got close to one lot and then they closed it so we had to find another one and ... read more
