We woke up and packed then went down for breakfast. Ah champagne was on the buffet. Of course, I had to make a mimosa. Susan had some too. I checked email and sure enough we got a message back from the hotel in Berlin. It stated Dear Claire, thank you very much for your kind email, after your check out, we just needed to paint the room. It is a normal maintenance handling in our hotel. We want that all of our guests are satisfied with our rooms. Ha, so we didn’t destroy the room like the family thought. We checked out, left our suitcases at the hotel desk and took a taxi (nice town car) into town. This was one the hotel set up for us (we thought it was going ... read more

Neither Susan or I slept well. My legs didn’t like yesterday and cramped bad all night. Susan had back and shoulder issues. We did not want to get up but we knew we had to take the train this morning and we had to catch it. We got ready then headed down to eat breakfast in the hotel and checked out and they called us a taxi. It was only slightly more than the subway and got us there directly with no more damage to the knees. Also, on the way we got the added benefit of going thru the park and seeing the Victory Column. We arrived early, but not knowing what the traffic would be like, that was ok. We found our coke light and settled in for the wait. About 30 minutes before ... read more

I woke up and ate breakfast. Don had gone to the store and gotten some croissants and I used Dennis’s honey butter. That stuff was really good. Susan walked to the store to get her and I a coke light. Ahhh some caffeine. We packed and headed to the airport in two rounds. Dennis drove half of us over and then went back and got the rest of the gang. Dennis and ViNi joined us for the Berlin portion of the trip. This was our gift to them. We took the local train from Dorfmart and then the ICE train from Hanover to Berlin. Oh my – I’m so glad Susan bought these tickets beforehand as we had assigned seats. Several of us got to our seats and people were sitting in them. They got up ... read more

We all woke up late, well we didn’t get in until late. I woke up and already had 4500 steps for the day. We tried to be quiet since Dennis and Vinnie got in even later. Their poor cat was outside meowing. This cat was even more shy than Izzy. We opened the door to let the cat in, “you’re not my master”, poof gone. We felt bad. I moved the food and water to the porch as I knew the cat had to be hungry since it just wasn’t coming inside because of all the people. A few minutes later, I saw her coming up and eating. The kitchen counter was covered with pans of food from last night - we will have food today. Dennis and Vinnie wake up around 1 and we talk ... read more

This should have actually gone in yesterday’s blog. So, I called to get the pins for my credit cards. Susan said they were able to set the pins for their USAA cards on line. I tried getting it online but couldn’t find out how, so I called American Express first. This was for my Delta Reserve card. You know this is a card many businesses travel with. So, I got an agent and ask him how to get the pin. “we don’t have pins”. What, “nope, we don’t have them and you just need to find someone that will take your card and not sue a kiosk”. Are you kidding me, this is a travel card and I can’t use it at any kiosks??? I keep asking and I tell them about the USAA cards. He ... read more

Wed late afternoon I drove to Charlotte to stay in a hotel for the night. My flight was much cheaper (like in the $700 cheaper range) to fly out of CLT over RDU. The flight didn’t leave till 4 and I didn’t want to waste a vacation day driving so I headed to Charlotte to stay in a hotel for the night. The next morning, I got up early to start my work day and about 9 my boss sent out a request for a meeting (conference call for me meeting for everyone else) for 1pm. Hum, that was the time I was going to leave the hotel. Change of plans… I left for the airport around 11, finally found a long term parking place, checked in for my flights, grabbed a lunch to go and ... read more

This is a trip to Arizona with Lou, Patty and I. The trip out was nice. Lou and I got upgraded to 1st class on the first flight and we all watched movies on the 2ndflight. We land in Phoenix and wait and wait and wait for our suitcases. Seems ours, and maybe 2 others, ended up on a different baggage turn style. Ok, at least it came. So we get in the Lyft to our destination (oh for the folks in Raleigh where it was in the 30s, it was in the 80s). We look up info on the “resort” and it says it’s an rv park… huh?? Well, it will be what it is and the Lyft driver had never heard of it. We get here and it’s a little retirement neighborhood with manufactured ... read more

Europe May 20th 2017

It’s been 2 days since I’ve written. Yesterday we were in Passau, it is a small town in Germany near the Austrian border. We got there early and did a city tour. Our guide was great – funny, personable, informative… The thing that amazed me the most was the flood level that was drawn against the wall. The one in 2013 was the second worst (the worst was in 15 something)… after the tour we took a city busy up the hill by the river to the castle. What a site, you could see the whole city. We had a lovely lunch. Well, we waited too long and missed our boat.. No, we didn’t panic. Why? It was an alternate itinerary. You could stay in town longer and take a bus and pick up the ship ... read more

Yesterday we spent most of the day touring Vienna. Because we had all been there in 1992 and seen A LOT of the city, we only took the included day tour then peeled off and spent the rest of our time wandering around looking at the sites. It has not changed much in the last 20+ years. Yes, it was still beautiful, but it was nothing new.. there was a lot of traffic in the city and we enjoyed a lot more learning about Sisi but that was the only new thing we learned. Then we took the subway back to the river and joined our boat. Nancy and John had a night excursion. Susan and I stayed on the ship. Few people were at dinner, most went into the dinner that Nancy and John were ... read more

So let’s see, my last post ended with free time on the deck. Shortly after that, we had our emergency briefing. Yes, we had to bring our life jackets but they told us, “Really all you need to do is grab a drink and go to the top level. The Danube is not that deep and the top deck will be out of the water”. This was the quickest briefing I’ve ever had. So now, we are sailing up the Danube and watching the sites go by. At first we were just in Hungry, then Hungry was to our south and Slovakia was to our North. We saw several really yellow fields, so Nancy googled and it turns out these are canola oil fields. Well, no they are rape seed fields and they make canola oil ... read more
