Wake up – well not really wake up since Susan and I didn’t sleep well but we got up and headed out with Nicky and Tim. For breakfast, we ate pastries at a local bakery that was right off the square. After breakfast we headed out to visit the town. Nicky has a guide that she tore the pages out of (that was recommended) and we followed the walking route backwards (as we were where the walking tour ends). Our goal was to get to the aqueduct which is a UNESCO site. In the city center, Nicky tells us the city “seal” is the aqueduct which can be seen on many of the buildings. Along the way we stopped at the fortified houses with the cut off spires and Nicky read some history to us there. ... read more

Remember there are more pictures after the end of the blog. In our hotel we see a sign in the elevator that says on Dec 24 and Jan 5 that the elevator is reserved for Santa Clause and the 3 Kings. Kings day here is the big day to give presents….. Nicky, Tim, Susan and I took off to grab a quick breakfast, get some money out of the ATM and find a present for Hector. I suggested a Smart Box. I love these and sure wish the states had them. You buy a type of book, like lodging, food, adventure…. And in it are a list of places all over Spain where you can get hotel nights, food or whatever the books says, for free. We bought an adventure book and a food book for ... read more

We woke up feeling so much more alive. Susan and I took off to find breakfast and a bank. The bank was across the street but Susan’s card didn’t work. Turns out she didn’t get up with the bank before coming. We then walked and walked looking for a bakery and finally found one. This was great with wonderful pastries. We then took off wondering the city and saw one of the churches from last night. It was now time to head back towards the hotel but it didn’t look right so we just retraced our track and got back. It turned out we had been just over a block away but…. It’s easy to get lost in the town as it has several central areas with spokes radiating from each and intersecting at odd angles… ... read more

Sunday – Day 1 Our next trip begins. Susan and I are heading to Spain to visit Nicky and Tim. I’m leaving from the beach and meeting Susan in Raleigh for our flights. Shelly is heading to Brazil and leaving out of Raleigh also. She is taking her surf ski so she has to take the truck. I head out and am on the road when Shelly calls. The truck lost its brakes about 7 miles from the coast. She got it back home and got a cab to the ILM airport where she had rented an SUV (1 way) to get to Raleigh with her ski. She found it for $98 online. Well she got to the airport and they said they had no cars – online lies sometimes, they said. She went to the ... read more

Sunday Susan, Pam and I wake up – normal hour – and talk, check Facebook and work on the blog. We then call mom and Sally about 9:30 and find out that Mom’s room got flooded. We head down. Seems the walk in shower was all slanted wrong and when she turned the water on to get the temp correct, it flooded into the bathroom floor and out the door, not into the drain which is in the middle of the bathroom floor. Mom tried to contain the damage by herself but it turns out that after close to an hour she finally woke up Sally who helped. Oh I wish she had called. She did lose a pair of shoes to the water. Susan, Pam and I head out the door and there are people ... read more

Saturday Today we are going to head to visit Aunt Lolly (mom’s sister) and her son, my cousin and his family. We were not going to leave the hotel until after 11 so mom and Sally wanted to sleep in. Not the sisters. We got up early had a quick breakfast and off on our adventure. Our first stop was the “Walk Across the Hudson”. It is an old railway bridge that has been converted into a pedestrian bridge. We didn’t have time to go completely across and back (would have been 3 miles total) but we did get out about ¼ of the way and made a few pictures. Our next stop was the Vanderbilt house. We drove thru the area and saw another one of their houses. Wow, they sure had money to have ... read more

Friday We had breakfast at the hotel (it was included – well 4 were, we had to pay for 1). We then left to head on our day’s journey. We had to pass back thru Darmouth College on our way out. We crossed the river and arrived in Vermont. Oh yea, I’m down to 7 states now (but that was yesterday). We saw the longest wooden bridge in Windsor (Cornish WIndsor Road Bridge). Crossing that bridge we arrive back in NH. We continue onward and saw a sign for “Fort at Number 4” so we went to see. It is an early 1700s recreation of the northern most fort at Charleston NH and it was at plantation #4 so that is how it got its name. Along the way we googled more facts. Barns are red ... read more

Thursday We’re losers. The lotto ticket was worthless. I guess we should have bought it at the Dunkin Donuts the first day. After eating at Panera bread, I fill my big glass with a giant diet Pepsi. Guess where it ends up? Luckily it lands in the multiple cups holds so there is not too much damage but it did take a while to clean up. This morning’s drive was heading inland and we saw barns, trees and rural scenery. I worked on the blog in back seat. Our first stop was Concord NH (the capital). We made mom walk around the lovely downtown and capital. We saw statues, a fake liberty bell (bell painted with the crack) at the capital. There was a clock tower with bell that the hammer struck on the hour and ... read more

North America » United States » Maine July 24th 2015

Wednesday Oh, in yesterday’s blog I forgot to mention – For my state count New Hampshire was new. I now only need 9 more states. Today that number becomes 8 as we head into Maine. We eat breakfast at the hotel and then head out to go up the Maine coast. Today’s travel will only be in small towns and along the ocean or at least that is what we thought. Wow, the coast here is nothing like I’ve ever seen. It reminds me of Lake Tahoe. You are driving thru the woods and hills and the next thing you look at a house and what do you see behind the trees and houses – but ocean. This area does not have the coastal feel we are all used to. It is just crazy to be ... read more

Monday Today’s Score Card Elevator 1 – Susan 0 : We started the day early as we knew we had a long day. We got all our luggage together and Susan and I went down to checkout and the get car and pack it. We got in the elevator and on the first floor Susan holds the door for me while I get the luggage cart out. Then Susan heads out of the door and I’ve never seen an elevator move so fast and not stop. It caught her mid stride and pushed her over into the wall. Susan had even seen the door coming and put her hand out to stop the door that was one messed up elevator door. Whoa…. The front desk heard about that. Dunkin Donuts 21.2 : After leaving hotel we ... read more
