We started our journey around 10:30. We left in the car with Esteban, Ellen, Simone, Henry (Ellen’s dad), Susan and I. Ellen’s dad lives in the house. He has a separate suite off the upper-level terrace. Her dad is 89 and is in excellent health. Our first stop was to Ellen’s brother’s place. Simone was going to stay with them for the day. We got to meet her brother and her niece. The 5 of us then took off to the markets in Otavalo. The traffic was slow but the drive there was beautiful. Otavalo is about 1.5 hours away but with the slow traffic and 3 stops it took us longer. The views during the drive were dramatic. Our first stop was for views at Mirador El Pisque. We saw a canyon and took pictures. ... read more

Thursday night Esteban brought home some flowers that the company he works for grows. We will tell you more about his job when hopefully we get to visit next week. The flowers are small and delicate and are only grown like this in Ecuador. They would lovely in a bouquet. Friday morning started out with shoe shopping. Before covid, Ellen used to have a shoe store in another part of her house. We found this new room when we went out on one of the terraces. She sold shoes by appointment only and served coffee and juices in a relaxed atmosphere. Clients could bring their kids and relax. During covid, she shut the business down. She still had some inventory so Susan and I went shoe shopping. Luckily, we have bigger feet than Ecuadorians so there ... read more

After Ellen’s nice breakfast, we got to tour her business. She has a small business, called Laurelis, and makes food for some grocery stores and restaurants. It started out with Danish pickles but has expanded to many different foods and juices. She has 3 employees and the facility is located on the first floor of the house. It has been upgraded to full commercial standards and is continuing to grow. Some of the products are different kinds of pickles, pickled zucchini and jalapeno peppers. The company also makes many kinds of juices using local produce and some recipes are made by specific restaurants and she is not allowed to share them. We were very impressed. After short break she drove us to the food market. Oh my, where did they get all this fruit? I’ve never ... read more

Susan and I have tried to do this trip twice before. The first time was in the fall of 2019. We were within a week of leaving when there was civil unrest and the government was temporarily moved out of Quito. We cancelled the trip and rebooked it for March 2020. Well, we all know what happened there and we had to cancel again. Luckily, we hadn’t attempted it because if we had, Ecuador and the US completely shut down and we would have been stuck here for months. So, this trip was our next shot. We were so nervous that something would happen again. We heard Cotopaxi was erupting. Oh no. We heard that the government was dissolved and there would be new elections in August. Oh no. Well, none of that has been a ... read more

Europe » Sweden September 9th 2022

We started our morning in a ghost café. Nobody was out, but us, and it was 6:30. We came back to the room to check on the times and saw the schedule 6. 9. Ok, we were there at 6:30. Turns out I looked at the dinner times, which I thought were the all-day times. Ooops, it didn’t open until 7. What? we are old people; we like to eat early. Ok, this is our first breakfast out since we had done room service EVERY day (not necessarily or choice). But we were not the only confused people there because when we went back up there were 5 other couples. Following breakfast, we took a bus tour of Stockholm. Our guide seemed to have issues. Alcohol? We were glad to figure out and do the town ... read more

Europe » Finland » Åland Islands » Mariehamn September 8th 2022

It’s finally filling like a sister’s cruise, drinking free wine in the room and writing the blog and laughing our heads off. We awake to cruising into Finland, no, THIS IS NOT HELSINKI!!!. Originally, we were supposed to go to Helsinki, Tallin and St Petersburgh. Blasted Russians, so instead we are in Mariehamn Finland. This is a cute little, but boring island. It is a vacation spot for Northern Europeans, we are not Northern Europeans. Claire decided it was time to move out of her private room back into the sister’s quarters. I did miss my sister and Susan appreciates that. We figured that turning off the TV(“no signal”) was a sign along with our covid release forms from the Dr. After combining rooms, we embarked on our 2-hour tour. We saw houses from the 1800’s ... read more

Europe September 7th 2022

Disappointment, no Northern lights. Susan didn’t even sleep with her earplugs in so she could be sure to hear the phone call. We each had our clothes laid out on the bed for the call, all to no avail. Today was a day at sea. WHY could this not have been during quarantine? We figured today we would be washing clothes. Well, since we didn’t leave our rooms for days, no need for that, we’re bring clothes back that haven’t been worn. We started the day with a history of the Vikings lecture followed by a lecture on the night sky at the planetarium. Son you would have enjoyed it, but your pictures of the planets are even better. After lunch we attended another lecture by our astronomer about comets and asteroids. We returned to our ... read more

Europe » Poland » Pomerania » Gdansk September 5th 2022

I, Susan, woke up this morning to the most beautiful rainbow I have ever seen. The pictures don’t do it justice. Not long thereafter, I was able to snap a picture of a Polish lighthouse with the light on. Then we passed the WWII memorial, this is where WWII started when Germany invaded Poland. Of course, Claire called me and said, “did you see the monument?”. Well of course I did, what a great morning and we hadn’t even left the ship yet. We took our included tour into town. It was not advertised very well. They said a walking tour of Gdansk and the old city. They neglected to say that Gdansk was one of the most beautiful cities in all of Europe, blocks and blocks of brightly colored facades. An interesting fact, Gdansk was ... read more

Europe » Denmark » Region Hovedstaden » Bornholm September 5th 2022

Today we come into port on Bornholm, Denmark. Bornholm is an island that is closer to Sweden, Germany and Poland that it is to Denmark, but it’s part of Denmark???? Our ship docks outside of Ronne, the main city of the island. Now you can tell this is not a normal place for the ships to come but since they dropped St Petersburg, Finland and Tallin, they added some extra stops. Look at the pictures where I ship docked. You had to take a shuttle into town which we did early. We took the 9:30 bus in and the 10:00 bus back and we had plenty of time. The 2 main attractions are the church and the light house. We even had extra time and did lots of shadow pictures. An hour or so later we ... read more

Europe » Germany » Mecklenburg-Vorpommern September 4th 2022

We got up early this morning, especially early since my (Susan) breakfast was delivered 45 minutes early and I was still in bed. We left to visit Schwerin Castle, one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. It took about 1.5 hours on the bus to get there, but we considered ourselves lucky. Those who were going to spend the day in Berlin had to leave at the crack of dawn and were on a train 3.5 hours each way. We had both been to Berlin at least twice, so we chose to visit the castle. Both of us decided we would never make it living back in the time the castle was used. Besides the boredom, we couldn't stand the heat, especially in the layers and layers of clothes they wore. We both got overheated ... read more
