We got up for breakfast in the hotel before meeting our snorkel group – the boat was sooo rickety and stated it had a maximum of 25 people. Regardless, we counted 38 people plus four crew on our boat – we went so slowly. We watched all the other boats passing us. Africa again!!! We got to the snorkelling area two hours later and loved the experience. We seen lots of different fish and they all swam really close to us. All too soon, it was time to head back, stopping off at a different beach for lunch of rice, fish and bananas, basic but still nice. After our snorkelling trip we spent time at the restaurant with the rest of our group and went out for dinner to say goodbye to some of the members ... read more

This morning we did a history tour of Stone Town, learning about the slave trade in particular. Lots of men were taken from Zanzibar as slaves to middle eastern countries. We seen the dungeons where they were kept for up to three days without food or water, just to test the strength of the man. The dungeons were not big at all, yet they would cram 70 men into one and 50 into the other. We also learnt about Dr Livingstone who is credited with helping to finally abolish the slave trade, there had been people before who had tried to achieve this but it was his negotiations with scholars at Oxford and Cambridge that ruled that the slave trade must be stopped. After our history tour, it was time to head north towards Nungwi which ... read more

We got up at 6.00am this morning to head towards Dar Es Salaam, breakfast was omelette and toast which was really nice. The journey, although only 100km took over four hours meaning that we missed the boat we were meant to get, however we were able to get on the 11am boat. This gave us 15 minutes or so to get some supplies in Dar Es Salaam before heading to the terminal. Dar Es Salaam is a really hectic place but wasn’t like what we had expected. With it being quite a major city we expected it to be more built up and more city-like I suppose, however it was similar to many places we had passed through with litter on the sides of the road and a lot of smaller family run shops as well. ... read more

Today we had to get up at 4.00am as the plan was to drive for around 14 hours which would mean we would be able to skip out a day which had just been set aside for travelling, giving us an extra day in Zanzibar. Everyone got into the truck and fell asleep pretty quickly. The drive wasn’t too bumpy but it definitely wasn’t comfortable. We stopped along the way a couple of times for bush toilet breaks, basically heading out into the bushes and squatting! Everything was going accordingly until we were stopped by the Tanzanian authorities, pretty much they seen tourists and decided to try to blackmail us. They claimed that our driver and cook should have special permits to be able to work as they drove through Tanzania, our guide stated this had ... read more

This morning I woke up at 4.00am desperate for a pee but decided to hold off until 5.00am when everyone would be waking up for breakfast. We got up and went for food then headed off to do another game drive, seeing sunrise as we drove. Today was amazing, our guide Simba drove like a lunatic making sure that we seen a leopard, more lions and two cheetahs. It was a great game drive and we were back at camp for lunch before heading back towards Arusha where we would be staying the night before heading to Dar es Salaam. We had a great time at the Serengeti and it was really interesting seeing the difference between it and the Masai Mara due to the climate differences. The drive back took quite a while due to ... read more

We got up for breakfast around 6.00am and headed towards the crater. The crater was formed after a volcanic eruption and now has lots of different types of animals in it. We were told this would be our best opportunity to see a rhino, however this didn’t happen. We did get to see lots of other animals though and the jeeps were great as we got to stand up through the roof for most of the safari. Seeing so many wild animals is truly incredible in their natural habitat. After the crater we headed towards the Serengeti and did a game drive on the way to our campsite, which was in the reserve itself (this was something I didn’t know until I got to Africa, I promise Mum, however when I found out I decided not ... read more

Today we had a relaxing morning, getting a chance to look around the snake park and head into the city of Arusha where we went to the supermarket and got to go on the internet for a while. Chris and I were amused at some of the cultural differences in Africa, everyone is so relaxed they are almost going backwards. We went into the supermarket around 10am only to find they had no water left, we went out and spent time on the internet and looking for other shops before heading back around 11am to buy some other supplies that we couldn’t get elsewhere. We went in we seen the same girl who had been sitting at the milk section still there, she had no more milk to put away but she was just sitting there ... read more

Breakfast was to be pre-ordered the night before so Chris and I were down for 7..00am to get our scrambled eggs and toast before we packed our things into the truck ready to depart towards Arusha which was our halfway point to the Serengeti. We had to stop to cross the border from Kenya to Tanzania, this didn’t take too long but involved getting out of the truck on the Kenya side, having our passport stamped to say that we had left, then walking about 100metres to the Tanzania side where we paid $50 to enter Tanzania. We all jumped back into the truck and drove for a couple of hours again before stopping for lunch on the roadside. Everyone pitches in with lunch, cutting fruit and veg, setting out the wash basins etc and before ... read more

This morning we got up early again to head back from the Masai Mara to Acacia Camp in Nairobi, luckily it didn’t take as long as getting there and we were back by 1.30. Chris and I ordered some lunch and then chilled for a while getting ready to meet our new group and the leader that would be taking us on our three week overland trip. We sat with the members of our previous group who were also going on the three week trip, or at least a part of the trip. Our new guide is called Grace and there are 22 people in the overland group, some of the group are only going to Zanzibar with the remaining 14 of us heading all the way to Victoria Falls. We spent time getting to know ... read more

We woke up at 5.30am ready for breakfast at 6.00am. We were really excited to be heading into the national park and departed in time to be there for 6.30am. Moses was a great guide and was really good at pointing out all the animals. We got to witness the great migration, it was amazing how many wildebeest in particular were crossing into the Masai Mara from the Serengeti. We also got to see a variety of animals with the highlight perhaps being the lioness that walked right in front of our truck. Moses had noticed it from quite a distance and it literally walked straight towards us. At the lunch break we got taken by a ranger for a walk along the river bank, there we saw hippos and crocodiles lounging in the sun, it ... read more
