We promised our family and friends we would set up a travelblog so here it is. This is to keep everyone updated on our travels and a way for you all to stay in touch. We depart 22nd July and stay in London before doing an overland safari in East Africa and spending a couple of months in South East Asia. We reach Sydney on 16th December where we hope to find jobs and experience life in Oz.

Africa » Zambia » Livingstone August 22nd 2012

Our days on the truck are coming to an end but we still have a lot to see and do. Today we left early in the morning to head towards Livingstone. We got to Livingstone around 1pm and got a chance to go and see Victoria Falls. It was really amazing to see, there was a rainbow in the water whilst we were there and depending on the way the wind blew we got sprayed quite a bit from the falls. We were able to see people sitting up at what was known as Devils pool, it is an area on the edge of Vic Falls where people can go swim, however there are a lot of safety concerns as there have been people who have fallen over the edge due to the current. It was ... read more

We were up and in the truck ready to depart again by 6.00am ready for another long day of travelling. Today we were heading towards Lusaka and it was another long day. We didn’t do too much whilst on the truck, spent some time reading and playing cards with other people on the truck. We stopped in a shopping area of the city and were surprised at how westernised it was. There was a cinema which looked just like back home, as well as lots of other shops and restaurants. By the time we got to the campsite we set up our tents, ate dinner and then went to the bar area where Chris played pool and darts whilst I chatted to some of the girls. We went to bed quite early due to another long ... read more

Africa » Zambia » Chipata August 20th 2012

We were up early and relieved to see that Chris’ symptoms had subsided. The nurses thought it was just from falling off the horse, by hitting his back he must have hit his kidneys in the process. Today was quite a long journey on the truck heading to the Zambian border where we would head towards Chipata. Chris took some more strong painkillers which helped him sleep for most of the trip and relieved the pain from his back. We reached the border where Chris and I got a double entry visas as our flights once the overland trip are over are booked out of Livingstone. We got a receipt for the double entry payment just to make sure there wouldn’t be any issues later. After the border crossing we headed towards Chipata. Chris and I ... read more

Africa » Malawi » Lake Malawi » Kandi Beach August 19th 2012

It was nice to get a sleep in this morning, we didn’t get up until 8!!! We went for a walk on the beach, played cards with some of the group and then ate lunch before heading off to go horseriding. We had booked to do a two hour trek in the forest and the beach. It being Chris’ second time horseriding he told the people that he had never been to ensure he got a horse suitable for novices. Chris was given Pavorotti and I was given Emma. Unfortunately the horseriding didn’t go as well as expected. In the first half hour of horseriding, we were given the opportunity to go for a trot. Chris was right behind me and said he was happy to try trotting. Whilst trotting, his horse bit my horse causing ... read more

Africa » Malawi » Lake Malawi » Kandi Beach August 18th 2012

We had the opportunity for a sleep in before brunch at 10.30. Chris and I still got up around 8am and spent some time reading – surprisingly Chris has taken quite an interest in books!!! We had brunch then everyone jumped in the truck to head to Kande, another area around Lake Malawi. We drove for two hours before stopping at a town to get some supplies and use the internet, Chris was keen to get on to find out all he could about the new Man United signing. We also bought some supplies in the local shops then jumped back on the truck to head to Kande Beach. We got there in the late afternoon and organised to go horse riding the next day. On the way to the horse riding office I hurt my ... read more

Africa » Malawi » Lake Malawi » Chitimba Beach August 17th 2012

Today we had a relaxing day around lake Malawi in Chitimba. We spent some time reading in the hammocks, walking down by the beach area, and then we went with some of the group over to the neighbouring campsite which had a large bar area. Lake Malawi is very interesting to see as it is so big you can’t see the end of it, also it has sand around it so you think it is actually the ocean. When we went over to the other campsite it didn’t take long for Chris and I to hear the familiar sounds of home. We heard some people with the Northern Irish accent. Chris took the opportunity to go and speak to them and found out that it was an elderly couple over to visit their son and daughter-in-law ... read more

Africa » Malawi » Lake Malawi » Chitimba Beach August 16th 2012

Today was another driving day as we headed towards the border of Malawi. We got up early and were ready to depart for 6am. Due to unpredictable border entries we packed our lunch in the morning and set off for another long day. The drives really are part of the overlanding experience, they can be very long but really to be able to see so many countries in such a short space of time it really is the best option. Again, everybody slept for a while on the truck, played some card games, read a little, for some reason my travel sickness hasn’t bothered me too much on the truck which is a positive as it would be a very long journey if I wasn’t able to do anything other than sit looking out the window. When ... read more

Africa » Tanzania August 15th 2012

We were up at 4.00am to leave at 5.00am. We weren’t getting breakfast before we left as we would stop off along the way to get some breakfast. Everyone slept the first couple of hours in the truck, then around 8am when we stopped off at a restaurant which had been pre-ordered. Everyone got Spanish omelette, crepes and oranges along with our choice of tea, coffee or hot chocolate. It was a real treat to get breakfast in a restaurant. It was then back on the truck for a very long drive to reach our campsite which we had been told was famous for their hot chocolates. We got there after six, which is a long day of driving, the crazy thing is that for some of these journeys the distance would suggest that the drive ... read more

Africa » Tanzania » East » Dar es Salaam August 14th 2012

We had to leave the hotel by 8.30am which we were really gutted about. We loved our time in Zanzibar especially in Nungwi where we had a chance to relax and get to know our group better. Plus it was really lovely not having to be on the truck at all over those days and just deciding what we wanted to do each day. We do love overlanding and know it is the best option for seeing Africa but it is nice just having time to ourselves and getting to relax. We had a couple of hours in Stone Town so Chris and I went to the internet café and then met Shaun and Sharon for lunch. Neither of us had a lot of shilling left so we went to the cheapest place we could find. ... read more

Today Chris and I went in search of the internet café, this resulted in quite a long walk exploring the area but no internet was found. We ended up using the internet café next to the resort which was REALLY slow and we didn’t’ get to do much apart from reading some emails. We also spent time on the beach, read some, relaxed a bit and ate lunch. For dinner, we decided to splash out and head to one of the nicer restaurants that we had seen. Dinner came to less than £20 but for us that was a treat. We both had the fisherman’s baskets which was lobster, prawns, fish and calamari – very nice! We then went and sat around the campfire with some of the group before heading to bed.... read more
