Megan here again. The last leg of our tour of Bolivia included the beautiful Salar de Uyuni, Tupiza and then off to Argentina. Uyuni is an amazing area in SW Bolivia that includes immense Salt Flats, hot springs, active volcanoes and amazing landscapes. We were very excited to get there, so early in the morning we boarded a bus from Potosi to Uyuni. Having heard lots of bad stories about night buses in Bolivia, especially in the south, we decided it was safest to take the approx. 7-hour bus ride during daylight. On the ride, we could definitely see why it was so dangerous. About 1.5 hours outside of Potosi you run out of paved roads. There are no street lights, the roads are narrow and there are some pretty good cliffs at times. Also, because ... read more

After managing to get some sleep in our delightful cama bus (cama means bed in Spanish), we arrived in Sucre - 12 hours south of La Paz on luxuriously paved roads. It is also at a delightfully lower elevation than La Paz, at only 2600m. Sucre is the historical capital of Bolivia, and upon seeing it, it is clear why, it has a lovely look - all the buildings are white with red, tile roofs. The main part of town has lots of wonderful colonial architecture. The city is lively and has all the amenities one might need, as well a rich history involving the liberation of Bolivia from the Spanish, and the formation of an independent republic. We arrived early in the morning and arranged a taxi from the bus station to our hostel - ... read more

The Bolivian adventure continued in the country’s official capitol: La Paz. We boarded another bus from Copacabana to La Paz, which involved getting out of the bus, en route, and onto a small boat to cross Lake Titicaca. It was quite funny to see the bus floating across the lake on a shanty looking barge. The entire trip to La Paz took about 4 hours. Just as we made our final descent into the city (Copa is at 3800m and La Paz is 3660m), we got some astounding views of the city from above. A large part of La Paz is in a valley, but the city is also built right up into the steep hills. It is amazing to imagine residents trudging up the incredibly steep hills to get to their homes every day. It ... read more

With our tickets in hand, we boarded our bus to Copacabana. A 7 hour ride to Puno, a one hour stopover and 4 hours, including a stop at the Peru-Bolivia border (no major issues, except that the bus got a flat and we needed to wait for them to change it). We arrived in Copacabana smelly (no shower since prior to the Inca trail) and tired. Having not booked a hostel we began searching and found the Colonial Hostel, which looked acceptable. We hauled our things up 3 flights of stairs and immediately got ready to have a shower. What we had failed to realize was that this hostel didn’t have hot water. We braved the shower anyways, but as it was glacially cold, there was a lot of whining by both Kara and me. Once ... read more

Day 3 started with another early wake-up call at 5am. The porters were frantically trying to dry the last of the wet clothes from the day before over their gas camping stoves. It was much appreciated to wake-up to dry jackets and pants. Luckily, there was no rain (yet) that morning, so we backtracked a bit to see one of the Inca sites we had visited the day before in the rain. It was definitely worth visiting again, as it was an amazing site, with amazing views of the Andes. After heading back to camp around 6:30am, we sat down to breakfast and embarked on what Raul called the “easy day” as it was “Inca flat” (some uphills, some downhills, but nothing as major as Day 2). We only trekked for about 5 hours in the ... read more

As there is no such thing as sleeping in on the Inca Trail (that would put us behind schedule, or, on Chilean time, as Raul called it), we were up early again on Day 2. This is the hardest day of the trail and we had to be ready for it. As I (Megan) am a total wimp, I decided to pay a porter to carry my bag for this day as we had to climb (approx - can't remember exact numbers) 800m uphill, go 600m downhill, another 200m uphill and finally another 200m down to get to our camp, I knew that I would fare better that way. As it turns out, I probably could have done it with the bag, but it was far more enjoyable for both me and my bad knee not ... read more

Kara here again. Our Inca Trail experience was quite eventful, so we have decided to split this blog entry into several pieces to avoid reader fatigue. Day one started with an early wake up call, at 4am, to make it to the main square for 5am to depart for the Inca Trail. After using my minimal Spanish to explain to the front desk boy (same one from the last entry) that we were going to the Inca Trail and needed to store our bags, we were able to securely (hopefully) store our bags and head out. We arrived at the square to meet our tour guides, porters , and the nine aussies. Much to our delight, our Llama Path tour guides, Raul and Yoshin, were really great and the Aussies all showed up in these ridiculous ... read more

So, we’ve been travelling in South America just over 2 weeks and we are now more than a week behind on our blog. I blame a couple of things, but the fact that we have been in remote areas and places without wifi are the main reasons for this difficulty (hard to find a good internet connection in the middle of the Inca Trail). So, to try to sum up our activities, we are starting with our Dec 23rd arrival in Cusco. Taking an overnight bus from Arequipa that was pretty nice (sat up top, cost about 60 soles because it was the Xmas season) we arrived in Cusco around 6:30am. We were beat from Colca Canyon and headed straight to our hostel (Southern Comfort, ok for what it was, staff could have been more helpful). ... read more

Hola amigos, This is Kara here. Megan and I have decided to alternate writing the blog entries to even out the workload, because, no one wants to be overworked on vacation! Just a disclaimer, this is very long - but after reading it, you will get a real sense of our adventures! We have arrived in Cusco and are currently acclimatizing at 3300m in preparation for our departure to Machu Picchu on Boxing Day. The last few days were spent in the city of Arequipa, exploring the lovely, cultural city and trekking into the 2nd largest canyon in the world! (2nd only by 136m!). We left Lima after only one day, as we felt satisfied with the good day we had there and we are a bit short on time, so needed to keep the travel ... read more

This blog is dedicated to mine and Kara’s 6 week adventure in South America. There are multiple purposes for this blog, but first and foremost we want to keep our friends and families updated on our progress. Also, we are hoping to do our fellow travellers a solid by giving information on what to do, prices, travel times, etc. So here we go… Lima: After about 14 hours of travel, in which I ran into some old friends on the first leg of the trip on their way to Mexico (Chessa, Max and Liffy Osburn), we arrived in Peru around midnight. After grabbing our bags and making it through security with two green lights for Kara and me, we were picked up by a taxi driver hired by the hostel we were staying at and we ... read more
