This weekend we decided to hire a car and take off on a day trip with our friend Kathleen. Our first destination was the historic, Roman city of Bath. Bath is famous for its hot springs, Roman period baths, Medieval heritage and stately Georgian architecture. The drive to Bath took approximately 2 hours. We made our way to a car park and then wandered the streets and visited the Roman baths. The baths were built by the Romans about 2000 years ago and were later rediscovered by the Victorians. The baths are fueled by England's only mineral hot springs. The hot springs were sacred to the Celtic goddess Sulis, whom the Romans later identified with the goddess Minerva. After we toured the Roman baths we were given a complimentary glass of 'spa water'. We thought that ... read more

Well, we just got back from a week of traveling with 44 students to Germany. We traveled with two other teachers, Ben and Kerrie, both of whom are from Australia. We survived five days of hearing "Are we there yet?", "How much longer?", "Can we put another film on?" (on the coach bus), "Where are we?", and "What's for dinner tonight?" It was a new experience since neither one of us has ever lead a trip before and we had a great time! We boarded the coach and left from the school at 6:30 am on Monday morning. After about 3 hours on the road we reached the Eurotunnel which connects England and France going underneath the English Channel. After exiting the Eurotunnel we stopped for fuel and food and drove for approximately another 10 hours ... read more

Hi again! We just got home today from a 4 night stay in Costa Brava on the coast of Spain. We stayed at an all-inclusive resort called the Sunrise Hotel in the region of Lloret de Mar. Our resort was located only 300 metres from the beach. We spent our few days lounging by the pool and on the sand next to the Mediterranean. The 'sand' along the beach was surprisingly rough. It wasn't as soft as we had imagined, but rather a cross between sand and gravel. We soaked up a lot of sun and came back to the rainy country of England with a bit of a tan! Malibu rum and pineapple juice was our main drink of choice while we relaxed on the beach chairs by the pool. Bri worked up the courage ... read more

Hello again! This weekend is a long weekend for us (Monday is a holiday, although we have no idea what the holiday is.) We've been rather busy enjoying our three days off! On Saturday we went into Milton Keynes to watch a football match (soccer) with some colleagues. We met up at a pub for a few pints before the match and enjoyed a social day out. We had a great time! It was the last match of the season so the fans were in high spirits! On Sunday we ventured to Windsor to see Windsor Castle. We took a train from Aylesbury to London where we then hopped on the tube to Paddington station. From there we took another train to Windsor with a transfer in Slough. Windsor castle is the oldest and largest occupied ... read more

For the last leg of our journey we visited two cities: Verona and Venice. After leaving our hotel in Pisa, we made the three and a half hour drive up to Verona. It was the longest stretch of driving we had to do all trip and we managed to drive it successfully without getting lost. After checking into our hotel we drove into Verona for the rest of the day. While we were in Verona, we saw the Arena (the third largest preserved amphitheatre in Italy, built in the first century AD), the local market, and the Casa di Giulietta (house of Juliet). Underneath the balcony at the house of Juliet, there is a bronze statue of Juliet where many tourists stopped to take a picture with her. For some reason that we do not understand, ... read more

Ciao! Our four days exploring the region of Tuscany has come to an end. On Thursday we picked up our car in Rome and drove a scenic route along to the coast to Siena. Siena is one the most beautiful medieval cities in Italy, second only to Florence for its artistic and architectural treasures. Siena sits on top of a very high hill and has many narrow streets. After spending the afternoon and evening in Siena we headed towards Florence (Firenze in Italian) to find our hotel which was located in Campi Bisenzio (about 10km outside of Florence). The drive took a couple of hours longer than expected. The roads around Florence are difficult to navigate, it was late at night, raining, and we were lost. We tried calling the hotel but the night time clerk ... read more

Buongiorno! It’s our last night in Rome so we thought we’d put up our pictures before going to bed. Tomorrow morning we pick up our rental car and start driving north. Our plan, as long as we don’t get too lost, is to make our way to the beautiful medieval city of Siena and then finally we will arrive in Florence tomorrow evening where we will stay for three nights. After Florence we will be spending one night in Pisa, one night in Verona, and then three nights in Venice. We will put up another blog post later with more pictures from our Italian adventure. For now here’s an update on our time in Rome. We arrived at Rome Ciampino airport last Saturday morning and made our way to our hotel. We spent the afternoon and ... read more

Happy Easter everyone! We spent Friday and Saturday of our long weekend visiting Stratford-Upon-Avon and Warwick Castle. We've put up lots of pictures for you to look at. Stratford is a very pretty city! We rented a car for the weekend so we can now officially say that we've driven on the wrong side of the road and did not cause any accidents! Driving on the left definitely takes some getting used to, but we managed to go the correct way around all the roundabouts. We began our day on Friday driving along the winding roads to Stratford-upon-Avon. On Friday we visited 5 houses that belonged to the Shakespeare family. The first place we visited was Shakespeare's Birthplace and we walked on the home's original stone floor. The second house we visited was Nash's House. This ... read more

Europe » Germany » North Rhine-Westphalia » Cologne February 21st 2008

We just returned late last night from spending three days in Germany. We went to inspect the locations and hotel that we will be visiting in June with 45 students. We flew into Cologne early Monday morning and were greeted at the airport by the car rental agency that we had rented a car from. They drove us to their office where we picked up our car, a Toyota Auris. Bri was the driver since Will isn't quite 25 and also because our colleague that came along is an Aussie and he's used to driving on the left side of the road. It was quite the adventure driving through the Germany countryside! The sights along the Rhine river were spectacular. We will have better pictures to post in June when the weather is warmer and the ... read more

Hello again everyone! We're at the beginning of another half-term here in England. We've decided not to go traveling this week since we're saving up for a two week trip to Italy in April. Well, more accurately, we've decided not to go traveling on our own dime. We leave for Germany early Monday morning for an 'inspection' trip! We're going to Cologne and Boppard to 'inspect' the locations that we're bringing 45 students to in June for Activities Week. It's a "vacation" so to speak that we aren't paying for! We're traveling with another teacher that we work with and we have a rental car to drive around to the necessary locations. However, Bri has been registered as the driver. Ah crap! Not only have neither of us driven since August (not to mention that we ... read more
