Travellers Diarhea (TD): When the toilet is your worst enemy, but at the same time....your best friend. Well, I got hit. I had avoided the TD for as long as I could. They say if you make it past the first 2 weeks travelling in Asia you're in the clear...well, "they" are wrong. It lasted about 16 hours and obviously timed itself right when I was going from Viet Nam into Cambodia on a 8 hour bus ride with no toilet...none of them have toilets here. So, I popped a couple of immodiums and hoped for the best. Fortunately, I [View Full Entry]

Chow to Laos

Asia » Laos » South » Bolaven Plateau
As I mentioned in my previous blog, everything in Laos runs on Laos time...if everyone back in Canadania thinks that the new early switch to day lights saving time threw people off, then you'd be shocked to visit Laos. Locals simply judge the time based on where the sun is in the sky. This can pose quite the problem when its cloudy...or especially at night time. After becoming adjusted to Laos time, we decided it was time to see if Viet Nam ran on the same type of clock. Well, to get there, we opted not to fly up to Ha [View Full Entry]

Laos

Laos....I spent a week there once. "I cant believe I'm in a country that I didnt even know existed until a year ago"....Josh Cameron Maybe a few of you dont know about a little country in S.East Asia named Laos. Its most notoriously known for being one of the most bombed countries in the world. After allowing the N.Vietnamese to smuggle arms through their borders and into South Vietnam during the Vietnam War and the Americans finding out, they were none too happy. And we all know when the Yankees get upset, they bomb the hell out of a place...well, Laos [View Full Entry]

More Chiang Mai

Asia » Thailand » North » Chiang Mai
Here in Asia, Cameron and I have been struggling a little bit with everything we have to think about on a daily basis in order to stay alive. Daily we have to worry about: taking a malaria pill right after breakfast, crossing the street is always an issue, people pickpocketing you, not drinking any tap water (even when brushing ones teeth) and the ever scary travellers diarhea (among others). In Chiang Mai, we were staying at a very nice guesthouse where we were forever greeted with a friendly, outgoing and helpful staff. We befriended one lady who booked us a couple [View Full Entry]

Chiang Mai

Asia » Thailand » North » Chiang Mai
After almost breaking down the door at 5 am to wake up Sylvia and Josh we made it to the airport for a flight to Chaing Mai. Its a city in northern Thailand and was a relaxing break from Bangkok. I took a cooking course one day and am now an expert at making spring rolls and Pad Thai, however, still sweat and cry like a baby if I eat anything relatively spicy. We went on a jungle trek that took us 3 hours out of the city and within close proximity to the Burmese (Myanmar) border. Which is as close [View Full Entry]

Bangkok

Whenever I'm sitting in an airport and I hear "Excuse me, this is the final call for Mr. So and So to make it to gate 6A, your plane is waiting for you" I always gave a good chuckle to myself and think, what was that somebody possibly have been doing that was more important him/her, that they jeopardize making their flight. Wel, let me answer that one for you. When you go to visit your University friends from back home in a foreign country for only a couple of nights, you tend to want to enjoy the time as much [View Full Entry]

The Great Ocean Road is not just a clever name. Built as a war memorial for those who passed away, it is an incredibly scenic and windy road that would be found in those porsche carrera commercials. While there are oodles of bus tours that go along that road, I felt that the whole bus tour thing was a bit played out and I wanted to drive it myself. This was the first time during my trip where I found myself in a situation where I really wish that I had 1, 2 or ultimately 3 others to join me for [View Full Entry]

Adelaide

I flew from Cairns down to Adelaide to visit my friend Phil Deacon. I hadnt seen him in almost a year as he is studying med school down in Oz at Flinders Uni. It was during my week stay with him that it hit me, that most people actually have daily lives with lots of responsibility. Deacon is definetly no exception. This man accomplishes more by 10am than most do in a full day. He was voted president of his med school program by his peers last year, which is a huge responsibility and also finds time to socialize more than [View Full Entry]

The roadoften travelled continued up the coast to my final destination of Cairns. Along the way I stopped at a place called Magnetic Island where I met up with 2 Canadians and 2 guys from Denmark that were my roomates back in the Whitsundays. We rented a 4X4 and drove around the island in a couple of hours...not that exciting really. I then decided that since I'd been to Nz and Oz and hadnt done anything extremely riveting, I'd try my hand at White Water Rafting on the Tully River. It has always been something that I've wanted to try and [View Full Entry]

not sure why captains seem to let me drive the boat over here.
I dont want to become a product of my environment, I want my environment to become a product of me ...Jack Nicholson in the opening line as Boston's head Irish Mob Boss, in Martin Scorsese's, The Departed. The next stop on the over commercialized and beaten track of Australia's East Coast was Airlie Beach. This time, think Sauble beach I guess...I dont know, or really care at this point, they're starting to all look the same. Each little place consists of hostels, bars, a lagoon, beaches (that you cant swim in as it is currently "stinger season"), bars and annoying travel [View Full Entry]
