We are exploring. Would be easier if we had thought to put the road atlas in the car but we didn’t and are reliant on the incar SatNav and my phone which frequently loses all signal. Today we went to the East Coast, under the pig’s ear so the more sheltered side. We waited for the overnight rain to pass over and hopefully set out in summer wear. All good. The sun did come out, the grey clouds vanished and we had a mainly lovely blue sky day. Pwllheli first. Neither of us have been before so no idea what to expect but we hit a traffic jam as we approached the centre, just cars trying to get from one side to the other. A really strange layout of a place. We drove through a typical ... read more

Moved on today a little further along North Wales. Not a long drive. Up the few miles to the coast then followed it along via the Menai Straits past Anglesey and down what I always refer to as the Pig’s Ear of Wales, the Lynn Peninsula. Can’t be specific as to where we are as really we are just somewhere surrounded by fields and quite lovely views, including to the sea about 2 miles away. This is a CL, Gwyn Tawel and we are nicely set up with fully hooked up water again. We decided to try attaching the awning and after only a couple of wrong moves managed quite well. We were told it takes 10 minutes and maybe it took us that plus an hour but now we know what we are doing will ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Conwy August 23rd 2023

Today was all about the beautiful National Trust Gardens at Bodnant. We had intended to visit there and then go on to Conway. There is a castle there which we have seen before when we’ve stayed at Ruthin with sister Liz and Graham, where there is a frequently used Lancs & Cheshire camping DA holiday site. We never made it to revisit the Conway Castle though as we were so delighted with the Bodnant Gardens we decided very quickly we would stay all day. We did have a slight issue getting there from the campsite and were truly grateful we didn’t have the caravan in tow as the Sat Nav took us on one of its Jollies in an attempt to cut 10 metres off our journey. We realized as soon as the road had a ... read more

Going to be two days rolled into one otherwise I will be behind myself before I’ve really set off. So, on Monday 21st, the caravan was persuaded to leave the drive and advance up our narrow road with the aid of the trusty auto motormover. The car reversed down the road and the two met harmoniously in the middle. Only blocked the road for 3 minutes but the man waiting in his Maserati was impatient. I did Not apologize. And we were off. Up the M6 and then the M56, all nice and easy and then some of the more interesting narrow lanes of North Wales, but none too testing, to our campsite, in farmland just above Colwyn Bay. Plas Farm, a very pleasant site, nicely kept and we are on a fully serviced pitch as ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Staffordshire August 20th 2023

It has been an absolute whirlwind of 2 months since we got back from France at the end of June. First of all, we had made the decision, while away, that we would stop motor homing. The complications of towing Smart Arse though OK in England and France are not as straightforward elsewhere in Europe and meant we were pretty well restricting our future trips to France and nowhere further afield. We originally considered just touring as we have done but, in the car, using campsite statics and we may do that in the future. For now, we have decided to try caravanning for a while. So first stop the Caravan dealer where I fell in love with a Bailey but was told it was a bit too heavy for our Qashqai to tow. Next dealer ... read more

Europe » France » Nord-Pas de Calais July 12th 2023

As had been forecast it rained in the night but happily it had cleared when we woke. We have been exceptionally lucky with our weather all month. When it got too hot at 35 degrees in the Camargue we moved a little further north and had some cooling rain, but nearly always at night so never a problem and never much. Perfect really. We had decided a walk on the beach was the order of the day as we have not seen much sea this trip. When we were in the Camargue it was too hot to walk on the sand. So I picked a spot on the map and we headed out, to Wissant. The overnight rain might have cleared but we discovered it had left everything shrouded in sea style mist. This was the ... read more

Europe » France » Lower Normandy June 26th 2023

We love driving through France for so many reasons. The super roads of course, many long and straight, traffic always so much lighter than in the Uk. Very few traffic jams or holdups. Roadworks always seemed to be managed much better and don’t cause major delays. And then the change in the countryside as we drive along. Pretty villages with hardly any people about anywhere. Buildings which look as if they have been there for centuries and will be there for another couple more yet. And the different styles of buildings too. As we got further north and into Normandy the buildings have more pointy roofs, some timbered buildings appear and the roof tiles become darker. Just a delight really. Our campsite for the night was a little odd. Camping Les Berge de L'lton in the ... read more

23/6/25 Driving Day heading slowly north. Though it was a driving day it wasn’t too long a drive as we had inserted the Brantome, previous stop, into the originally planned itinerary so it reduced the miles to travel to next stop. A pleasant drive through lots and lots of agricultural land, fields stretching for miles in all directions and full of sunflowers and potatoes and of course golden grain. Harvesting has already started and we saw lots of farmers cutting their crops. We bypassed Poitiers where a massive amusement park Futuroscope is located. We saw some of that as we drove by but were not tempted to stop. Campsite for the night was Camping du Lac de Saint-Cyr at Beaumont Saint-Cyr. Sunday, a big leisure lake and a gloriously sunny day. The turn into the campsite ... read more

Europe » France » Aquitaine » Brantome June 24th 2023

Had a choice of directions to explore the area but settled for Bourdeilles 10km away as it promised a chateau. As it happened we didn’t actually visit the chateau itself. Drove down the narrow road through the village to the river and found a parking spot then went across a bridge to the other side of the river. What can I say but it really was a wonderful spot to sit and watch the world, or more precisely, the river go by. Just such a beautiful peaceful spot. The bridge is ancient, vaulted and arched and the river so pretty. Much clearer water here than at the campsite where it is quite brown which could be accounted for by the boats which go up and down there. We sat down to admire the view across the ... read more

We were quite surprised really to find that we hadn’t been to Brantome before as it is such an obvious place to visit, well on the tourist trail. We have stayed not far away, a little further north near Nontron, at Chateau le Verdoyer a couple of times in our very early motorhoming days and remember a lovely visit to Nontron with sister Rosemary and husband Barry when we all met up at the campsite so have very happy memories of the area. I’m including a tiny photo I found of them there as it makes me happy to see it. Saturday is market day in Brantome and the market is enormous. We had no real need of fresh food but a French market is always a delight to wander around so that is what we ... read more
