Chiang Mai in the North of Thailand was our last stop in Thailand before moving on to explore the rest of Southeast Asia. It’s hard to believe we spent a month in Thailand, it went by so fast! We had some big plans for Chiang Mai: trekking, riding elephants, bamboo rafting and visiting local tribes. However much to our disappointment and frustration we didn’t get to do this as we ran into some major problems with our tour company. It all began on our very first day with them; we were told to be waiting in the lobby at 6am! So [View Full Entry]

Floating Market: Early one morning we headed to Bangkok’s largest floating market which was located in a small village on the city outskirts. Instead of roads this village had canals. Ashley spent the 20 min boat ride to the market trying to prevent the brown water from splashing on her after she was informed that the random pipes leading from houses into the water were sewage pipes. She was even more horrified when she saw people washing their dishes and laundry in the water, right next to the pipes! Driving up the canal and into the market was an amazing site. Ok so this entry is a long time coming, it seems like we were in Thailand so long ago! Writing this particular entry seems quite daunting because we have so much to say about Bangkok, we did some really exciting stuff while there. But before we could do anything we spent three days in the hotel, well Alex did as he ate or drank something to upset his stomach. We suspect it was a coffee he drank at a locals hang out that was made with warm water, instead of boiling. So Ashley spent the next few days running around nearby [View Full Entry]

Mmmm...fried any and everything!
Knee deep in some spots

Upon arriving in Phuket we took a bus into town in search of a hotel. Everyone on our bus had pre-arranged hotels and as usual we hadn’t , so we just told the driver to drop us at a random corner. We seem to be developing a pattern of being at an utter lose when we first arrive somewhere, but we somehow manage to wing it! The first hotel we looked at was the famous On-On Hotel, this was the hotel featured in the movie the Beach. Obviously people only stay here because of that reason because it was actually disgusting....it stank, [View Full Entry]

Breakfast
Breakfast
Ashley was a bit fearful when she found out this was breakfast...a cocunut milk rice with sardines and a spicy red curry all wrapped in a banna leaf and newspaper.
Our overnight train from Malaysia ended in Hat Yai, Thailand. It was our plan to travel on to the town of Krabi, a popular jumping off point to all Thai islands on the Andaman coast. It was not until we stepped off the train that we realized we had no idea how to get to Krabi, as this broken down platform we were standing on was hardly the transportation hub we expected. Perhaps reading the confusion on our faces we were bombarded by people trying to sell us bus rides into other cities and adventure packages. Learning that a bus ride [View Full Entry]

One of the many islands we passed on the way to Phi Phi
We hopped on the ferry in Krabi and headed to Phi Phi. The boat was filled with locals, eager to talk and ask where we were from. We ended up meeting a guy who was on Phi Phi for the tsunami, he was at work when it hit and climbed up on a roof to wait for a boat to come and get him. Getting off of the ferry you would never have guessed everything was washed away only a few years earlier, it was so built up. Failing to research about Phi phi at all when the hotel told us [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Kuala Lumpur after a six hour bus ride from Singapore. We were lucky enough to be given front row seats on the top of the double decker bus allowing us to get some really good photos and views of southern Malaysia. We reached the city at 10pm and were dropped at a random corner on the edge of the city, needless to say we were completely at a loss as to where we were and what to do. Just standing on the corner we realized how easy it was for us to get a cab. Within seconds we [View Full Entry]

We headed here straight after dropping our bags at the hotel.
This was the starting point of our journey! After a delay in Alex's flight and his parents kindly driving him another hour to the next closest airport we finally met after 3 months of being apart. We spent 3 days racing around the many sights of Manhattan and attempting to gather final supplies... and of course enjoying the food and shopping. We indulged in everything that we thought might be our last luxuries. [View Full Entry]

Finally in Asia

 Asia » Singapore
We can't beleive we're finally arrived. After 21 hours on a plane and the airline losing Alex's bag in Dubai we arrived one bag short in Changi Airport, Singapore. We were taken to our hotel, The Royal Peacock, and in desperate need for a toilet, we were shocked to find that what we thought was a closet door was indeed our restroom. After finally falling asleep we awoke the next morning, however as there was a lack of windows (any) in our room we failed to realize it was only 3 a.m. Ashley is yet to correct her sleeping habits and [View Full Entry]
