Chicken Head Island
One of the many islands we passed on the way to Phi Phi We hopped on the ferry in Krabi and headed to Phi Phi. The boat was filled with locals, eager to talk and ask where we were from. We ended up meeting a guy who was on Phi Phi for the tsunami, he was at work when it hit and climbed up on a roof to wait for a boat to come and get him. Getting off of the ferry you would never have guessed everything was washed away only a few years earlier, it was so built up.
Failing to research about Phi phi at all when the hotel told us a shuttle would pick us up from the dock we didn’t think they meant a boy pushing a cart. It was then that we learned there was no motorised vehicles on the island, if you wanted to get somewhere you had to walk. In the 15 mins it took us to walk to our hotel we both got badly burned and spent the next few days peeling and trying to avoid the sun.
Walking around the island it seemed like it was a dedication to Bob Marely, his picture was everywhere and so was his music. It was
definitely a party island, people walked around in swimsuits and the drinks were cheap. Unfortunately we had to refrain from the drinks one night as we wanted to take an early morning boat ride.
We hopped on a wooden boat with an engine that looked like it was made out of old tin cans and explored the beaches around Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. Monkey beach was probably a favourite of Ashley’s. Monkeys ran around everywhere and you were able get up close with them when feeding them bananas. Our boat ride also took us to some breathtakingly beautiful bays that were only accessible in high tide, along with the famous Maya Bay, the beach where the movie The Beach was filmed.
Unfortunately we couldn’t stay long in Phi Phi because accommodation was so expensive so we left after three days and two nights on a ferry for Phuket
