Since my last entry I did the last things on my list: I visited the Plaza San Martín, the Museo Evita, and the Puerto Madero. The Museo Evita is one of the best museums I've seen here in Argentina. It is informative, quite complete, and has good illumination. Especially the exhibition with creations of Argentinian artists - all containing the same two busts of Evita and Perón - was very interesting. The Puerto Madero is one of the most expensive barrio. I walked along the Reserva Ecológica, which separatres the city from the Rio Plata and had a typical Chorripan. On Saturday I did a guided tour called "historias, mitas y leyendas" through the cementary. Are you superstitious? Maybe this true story will turn you superstitious: one of the sons of the president Mitre and two ... read more

I got quite a bad cold this weekend (yes I know, too much running through the city and partying), thus I haven't done much since Sunday except for watching the ballet (magnifico), studying the preterito de subjuntivo, and going to the tango classes. I've seen many things that were on my list, but I still need to go to the Evita museum, walk around in the puerto madero, dance tango en la plaza dorrego, and watch 'dracula', an Argentinian musical. Today we discussed the tango 'cambalache' at school. This song from the 1930's contains the sentence 'el que no llora no mama y el que no afana es un gil' (literally: the one that doesn't cry doesn't get breastfed and the one that doesn't steal is a dope). I think - and so does my teacher, ... read more

Wow, already two weeks over! There's so much to do in Buenos Aires - day and night. Because of the semana santa we had classes only on Monday to Wednesday, but I worked quite hard on the imperfecto de subjuntivo! After classes I had tango lessons (my teacher, Carlos, told me that I could almost be an Argentinian :), visited the MALBA (Museo de Arte Latinoamericana de Buenos Aires, great fotos by Grete Stern!), the Mueso Nacional de Bellas Artes (I really do like the Argentinian art of the 20th century), had a coffee at the famous Cafe Tortoni, went to the Plaza de Mayo, waved from the balcony where Evita held her speach, did some shopping in the calle Florida, went to the "world's most beautfiul library", which used to be a theater/cinema, went dancing ... read more

First week in Baires is already over! Although I speak mostly in English with the girls from school (they're all beginners), I've learned a lot in clases and practised at home and in the city. I got upgraded, so this week I'm in level B2 and I have classes in the morning now. I bought a 48h ticket for the city tour bus, which brings tourists to all important barrios. I did a first part on friday with the girls and the rest on saturday. Saturday was a really busy day with an Argentinian schedule...it started with the city tour bus, which brought me to the barrio La Boca, where I spent most of the afternoon and where I had good cheap lunch just one street further away from the 2 touristic ones. The tour continued ... read more

Days here in Buenos Aires are just too short...! Homework, school, going for a drink, tango lessons (we got a few more guys today), visiting the Japanese garden, going from one place to another...traffic is quite an issue - not only on the streets but on the side-walks. To be honest I was a little afraid of Buens Aires after all the stories I heard from my dear Argentinian friends as well as from tourists, but I love this city. Although the buildings are huge, it's very beautiful, the avenidas are nice and there's so much life and movement. And if you follow some rules, it isn't a dangerous place, especially not the barrio recoleta. Additionnally, the porteños aren't that sarcastic and cold, they're usually nice and try to help. Homework for today was to write ... read more

This very long day started with a Spanish test at 8 (I found the school! It's only 12 blocks from where I live, thus I can walk there, which takes me about 20-25 min). After the test they told us the level, schedules, and teachers and since many girls of our newby group had lessons in the afternoon, we went together to the recoleta cementary, where the grave of Evita is. At 1 PM we got some information and pizza, and at 2 our lessons started. In my class are only 3 students and we were basically talking during 4h. School bell at 6. Then I went to an intenet coffee to organise some stuff for my PhD, went home around 7 (12 blocks again), changed quickly before taking the tube to go to the dancing ... read more

I'm in Buenos Aires! After a 14h trip in a very cold bus and with 1.5h delay I arrived yesterday morning. My host famiy is very nice and lives in Recoleta. Yesterday, I already went to the barrio San Telmo to meet Beatrice (Punta Arenas) and to visit the famous market. Well, I've to go to school now (exam!). I'll tell you more a bit later.... read more

South America » Argentina » Río Negro » Viedma April 8th 2011

Since coffee shops are the only places with bathroom (and internet), I'm sitting close to the Rio Negro, watching all the people who are jogging, sailing, cycling, rowing... These cities on the coast must be quite nice places to live. Infrastructure is good, it's quite safe, people live in very nice houses (in Puerto Madryn Bolivians own the construction companies, that's why they have solid and beautiful buildings - according to Alejandro, one of the guys working at the hostel. However, I'm a bit afraid of talking about construction and buildings since I know that an architect is reading this ;-) and the weather is agreeable too. The hostel in Puerto Madryn was one of the best ones: central, close to the terminal and beach, nice people, ok temperature in rooms, breakfast without restrictions (a la ... read more

South America » Argentina » Río Negro » Viedma April 8th 2011

With 2h delay I arrieved yesterday evening in Viedma, which is in the province of Rio Negro and on the southern side of the river, and went then to my hotel in Carmen de Patagones on the other side of the river and thus in the province of Buenos Aires. The two small, beautiful cities are connected by two bridges and a taxi-boat. Carmen d.P. was one of the first villages on the coast of Argentina and was funded in 1779 by Don Francisco de Viedma and the first habitants were from Galicia. The city was very important place for import and export and played an important role during the conflicts with the Portuguese in Brazil. The woman sitting next to me in the bus (= new invitation in BA) came from Punta Arenas and went ... read more

Yesterday I spent most of the day emailing and organising my PhD. I'll make it short: I'm going to Tübingen for my PhD and I'll start around mid-June. Though, everybody, I'm back on the 24th of May -> let's meet then! And of course you're welcome to visit me in Germany, it's not that far from the border. After sitting in front of the computer most of the time, I enjoyed again the nice beach, the 29 degrees aire temperature, as well as the 16 degrees water temperature...(Argentinians think I'm crazy). Next stop is Viedma, well, actually, Carmen de Patagones. Bus's leaving at 2 pm and it's a short trip of about 6h. Btw: comments still welcome ;) I'd actually like to know who's reading my blog...!... read more
