Tuesday (8th) was the horse riding day. Marcelo, el polista, picked us up at the hostel and brought as to Cabalonga, about 1h from Córdoba (West). Although one can't compare the material to Swiss standards, everything worked and the horses looked fine and were very nice. We did a 3h trip through the (pre-)Sierras and the landscape was simply beautiful. Afterwards asado (what else) :) I learned a lot about politics and daily life in Argentina from Marcelo's father. E.g.: A single person needs about 2500 Pesos per month, a family about 5000 to live more or less quietly. The cook in the close bar-restaurant gets 100 Pesos per working day (works there Thursday-Sunday), an employee who's paid by the government gains up to 7000-8000 (pesos->francs: 1/4). This year are many elections here in Argentina and ... read more

South America » Argentina » Córdoba » Alta Gracia March 9th 2011

On Monday (7 March), Kelly (from Brazil) and I went to Alta Gracia, a little town in the Southwest of Córdoba. This is one of the places where (rich) Argentinians spend their holidays. The differences between the life style of the original habitants and the tourists is quite striking. But Alta Gracia is also known for a beautiful little church and the grotto of the virgin from Lourdes (gruta de la virgen de Lourdes) and since Monday and Tuesday were holidays because of the carnaval, many Argentinians pilgrimaged either to the virgin or the tennis court of Alta Gracia. Another highlight of this town is the Che Guevara museum (I would call it Che Guevara church...). Che used to live here as a child because of this asthma and this house is now a museum, which ... read more

Little correction: the university was built in the 17th century and is the oldest in Argentina and the 4th ot 3rd of whole South America. To build the close iglesia de la compañía de jesús, several thousand indios in the north of argentina were educated and they made all the pieces of the church, which then were transported to Córdoba (where no trees grow that could be used to construct such a building). Today I walked through the whole microcentro plus extensions. On a Saturday, half Córdoba is there for shopping, eating, having coffees etc. Fortunately, there are many possibilities to quickly sit down because it's still quite hot. After the city tour, I visited the Evita museum (museo superior de bellas artes). On the way to the museum I passed by the only gothic church ... read more

Today I went with the americanas to the muesum of the university of Córdoba, founded in the 16th century by Jesuits. The building is very beautiful, but imagine studying for 16 years, then defending your thesis during 3 days in front of everybody more or less important at the university, and passing this exam with a chance of about 5%... Nowadays, the best college here in town (Monserrat) does something similar by chosing only the best students, however, this selection is based only on the children's skills since the college is for free (btw: first girl accepted in 2001). It's very interesting to learn about the history and educational system over here (also we wouldn't call this university very old..). We enlarged our knowledge even more by visiting the museo provincial de bellas artes, where they ... read more

First day: survived! :-) I spent my first day mainly with buying the most important things and visited thus the most central part of the city. It's a very beautiful city and for tomorrow, a real city trip is planned. But most importantly: they found my lugagge and brought it to the hostel! Beside shopping I was mainly sleeping. The trip, the jet lag, and the climate here make me very tired. I read again the entry from yesterday: I hope you understood it :-) ... read more

South America March 3rd 2011

I'm in Argentina!! And I could write a whole book about the last 30 hours...First, all flights were punctual and without any complications, however, I'm luggage-free, meaning that I have only what I was wearing plus documents and money! But at least I'm in the hostel in Córdoba and the airelines are searching for my luggage. Apparently, Zürich thought that the rucksack would go directly to Córdoba whereas Buenos Aires says that this isn't possible. But let's start with the fligth Zürich-Sao Paulo: I didn't sit next to a handsome Brasilian...but to a Polish guy...who went to Brazil with his friends because of the carnaval...his English was bad, he asked me which language people in Brazil would speak, he was snoring and telling me we would be above Israel (it was Spain)...and he used to sip ... read more

Everything is packed! And believe me, it isn't easy to pack for such different climes and actvities... but finally, everything fitted in and I'm still able to lift the rucksack :) (just think e.g. about the shoes you need for all this...!) Tomorrow is take-off: Zürich -> São Paulo (12h) -> Buenos Aires (3h) -> Córdoba (1.5h) where I should land at 6 PM local time (10 PM in Switzerland). In total it takes me quite exactly 24h and I just hope for a calm flight (no sharks ;) The weather in Córdoba looks very promising: min 17°C, max 29°C for Wednesday! 3 Monate, 4 Klimazonen - Wandern/Stadt/Schule/Tanzen/Reiten... Alles ist gepackt! Glaubt mir, es ist nicht einfach für so verschiedene Klimata und Aktivitäten zu packen...aber schliesslich hat alles rein gepasst und ich kann meinen Rucksack noch ... read more

These are my plans (so far) for my trip: CH - Córdoba - Mendoza - Neuquén - San Martín de los Andes - Bariloche - El Calafate - Punta Arenas - Rio Gallegos - Puerto Madryn - Viedma/Carmen de Patagones - Buenos Aires - Correintes - Puerto Iguazú - Foz do Iguaçu - São Paulo – CH Little hint for orientation on the map: Córdoba is in the middle, then I go south (along the Andes) till Punta Arenas and north again (Eastern coast) till Buenos Aires. Finally I'll visit the very north parts and Brazil.

This is the blog about my trip to Argentina (and Chile and Brazil) in March-May 2011. Dear friends, I hope you'll enjoy reading about these 3 months. I haven't decided yet about the language of this blog...I guess there's no language that would be understood by everybody. It might be a mix of English, German, and Spanish, and if somebody is interested in the translation of a particular entry, just write a comment, email, or facebook message :) Enjoy! Sehr ... read more
