South America » Argentina » Chubut » Puerto Madryn April 6th 2011

Yeah horse-riding on the beach is great!! :) I spent 2h on the beach and the dunes of Puerto Madryn with a very nice horse (Arab-mix) and a nice guide. We were the only 2 persons on the beach and view from the dunes was amazing. The rest of the day was very relaxed: walking on the beach, buying bus tickets, eating fish with Ean from London, watching the stars (there are many more on the southern sky). Since I saw all these cute penguins on the península, I won't do the 3h long bus trip to Punto Tombo, where the biggest Magallan penguin colony can be visited. Today I've to do some organisational stuff, to enjoy the beach again and tomorrow I'm taking the bus to Viedma/Carmen de Patagones - the gate to Patagonia. And ... read more

South America » Argentina » Chubut » Valdes Peninsula April 4th 2011

Every single day, 7 persons settle down in Puerto Madryn. Well, I can understand them, unemployment is low, tourism and industry growing and the weather great :) A 2-room apartment close to the beach is about 2000 pesos/month...maybe I should move to Puerto Madryn ;) Puerto Madryn was founded by Welsh people and close small cities such as Gaiman are still very Welsh. I did the trip to the Península Valdés today. It's an UNESCO World Heritage Site with sea lions, Magallan penguins, sea elephants, and the only place where orcas partly leave the sea in order to hunt penguins and sea lions. Unfortnately, we didn't see the orcas today, but young sea lions, some sea elephants and many cute penguins. The península is a semi-desert with many guanacos and ñandús as well as grey fox, ... read more

I'm in Puerto Madryn: the sun's shining, it's about 22 degrees, the beach is 5 min from my hostel :D yes, the south was very beautiful, but I'm obiously enjoying the somewhat warmer north. The hostel is very nice too, and tomorrow I'm going to the Peninsula Valdés - penguins, sea lions, whales, dolphins... :) and a cabalgata on the beach is planned. Argentinian computers don't like memory cards...but I'll try to take some pictures with my cell phone tomorrow.... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » Río Gallegos April 2nd 2011

I'm in rio gallegos waiting for my bus to puerto madryn. The bus trip from punta arenas to rio gaallegos wasn't that exciting. When I came to Chile it was snowing on the Argentinian side and sunny in Chile; now again, sun in Chile and rain in Argentina...but the weather changes quite quickly here in the south. At least it's getting warmer and puerto madryn should be quite nice. How do you know you're in Chile (or at least in Punta Arenas)? 1) nobody drinks mate 2) traffic light and police everywhere 3) you don't understand the people :) 4) salsa, bachata, merengue everywhere :) and rafaga! Chile usually switches to winter time on the 2nd of April, but this year they decided to do it on the 7th of may. Apparently, not all Chileans know ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Punta Arenas April 2nd 2011

Pali aike vulcano today! Great hiking together wirth Beatrice and with many guanacos (lama-like), ňandus (the emu-like ones), a fox, and many other birds. The day was great and the weather beautiful, meaning that I felt comfortable wearing 2 shirts, 2 pullovers, a warm jacket, a jacket against the wind, a cap, 2 paires of trousers, 2 pairs of socks, warm shoes, and gloves :-) but the sun was shining and we had a nice day. Tomorrow the 24h trip to puerto madryn, warm north, yeah! Pictures follow (I have about 50 guanaco pics). ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Punta Arenas March 31st 2011

City tour today. The German from the hostel (which is together with me the only guest at the moment) and I went first to one of the miradores of the city, from where we had a great view over the city, the Strait of Magallan (yeah, I found out how it's called in English!) and Tierra del Fuego. The weather is beautiful, but quite cold (about 6-8 degrees) and - again - Patagonian wind. After buying my bus ticket to Puerto Madryn (I changed plans. I won't stop in Rio Gallegos, but do the whole trip Punta Arenas - Puerto Madryn, which takes me about 24h, starting on Saturday at 11:30), we visited the Magallan museum and the cemetery, which is called the most beautiful cemetery of South America. It's not that beautiful, but quite pretentious ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Punta Arenas March 31st 2011

Let's start with the present: I'm in Chile, in punta arenas, which is directly at the Magallanian street. It's quite different from what I've seen so far, and it's quite cold. When we crossed the Argentinian border in rio turbio it was snowing...I hope there's no Argentinian reading this blog, but the Chilenos are calmer, better organised, and politer...which isn't necessarily better, but nice for tourists. Within 4 weeks I experienced hot+humid, hot+dry, warm+humid, cool+humid, cold+dry, cold+wet...which is quite tough for the body, especially the skin. Calafate is a growing city, which is surprising since it's in the middle of nowhere, and as far as I know there's no industry, no agriculture, no university...what do people do there?? And it isn't very well reachable by bus...which brings me to aerolineas argentinas. You know I'm not a ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » El Calafate March 28th 2011

After a very short night (sa-so) I slept very well during my first night in el calafate. Yesterday, I went to the glaciar perito moreno together with an Indian guy from London, a German girl, her friend from Israel, and the Galician I met at the airport in Bariloche. I can't stop talking about the Patagonian colours...! We saw every possible blue you could imagine - absolutely great! Weather was nice too (strong wind, as always). El Calafate is very expensive (do you remember the 4 peso ice cream? Here it's 17 pesos), though the kitchen is busy the whole evening. During dinner I met a guy from the USA who now lives in London and used to live in Buenos Aires, and we had some very interesting conversations yesterday and today. Today I met the ... read more

South America » Argentina March 27th 2011

Due to my heavy cold I didn't do much in Bariloche. However, I know the city centre and the hostel very well now and Andres (Uruguay), Daniel (Argentina), and Enrique (Colombia) - all of them working at the hostel - were taking care of me very well. Bariloche is a very touristic and boring city, but the landscape is beautiful and I saw the lakes at least during my trip from San Martín to Bariloche. The last day I spent with David from Israel. All these groups from Israel consist of 22-24 years old who just finished their 2-3 years long military service...some of them in Gaza... In the evening we went to the famous Don Alberto restaurant with the best meat in Argentina and I must admit that the bife de lomo was excellent! Today ... read more

As I wrote last time, I spontaneously changed hostel when I arrived in Bariloche. The reason why I did that was the following: when I arrive in a new city I first look for a map to have an idea where the hostel is. Well, in contrast to what they claimed on their homepage, the hostel I booked is quite far from the centre. Since it's low season in Bariloche, Rubby - a Venezolano who works for the hostel where I'm staying now - was at the terminal and offered dorms to the arriving tourists. That's how I landed in this hostel 'freedom'. It's a bit...hippie, a bit alternative...but the people are great and it's surprisingly well organised. It's one of the hot spots for all the groups from Israel who travel Argentina, but there are ... read more
