I arrived to Jesolo around 7am, instead of 8am. An Italian lady was supposed to pick me up at the coach station and bring me to Cavallino-Treporti. As I was there an hour earlier, I kept a close eye on the lady, let's call her A. I thought she might turn up earlier. I did see a small Fiat stopping at the parking lot and a lady in her 50's got out of it. She noticed me, the only person waiting there with lots of luggage, and she went straight in the waiting room of the station. At the beginning I thought I don't have a reason to think that that lady is A., as she would have approached me by now. In the next half an hour she cleaned her car in the coach station: ... read more

Dear Family & Friends! The day has finally come to depart to Italy! Some of you had an idea what day I'm going, some of you just knew that I'll be in Italy at some point and some of you were well informed. I only have a few hours to catch my bus and I just wanted to write about the work l I'll be doing for 6 months in general. On the maps you will see exactly where I will be. I'll work in an Italian restaurant as a waitress during the summer season. The contract with the agency is from the 23rd June till the 23rd December - exactly 6 months. This will be my internship for college, working 40 hours a week, meaning that I'll have 2 free days every week! I had ... read more

Whether the receptionist girl, M. and I will go to Zakynthos today was indefinite as recently she fell sick from the food they gave us in the hotel. Her stomach is so sensitive to every single dish that it doesn't matter what she eats, it will come out soon. Besides, she was unable to swap her night shift - she finished at 7am and we departed at 7.30am to Skala... The trip was breath-taking and I would have regretted if I hadn't gone for it. I let the pictures talk instead of me. We got back at 3.30pm. I got sunburned, again, and the whole day was really tiring because we were outside under the sun all day. The air is really humid and you're not only sweating from your face and your back... no, you're ... read more

This title should have been posted two months later but things change... Two days ago I received my salary. The accountant came to the bar around 8pm with a smile on his face telling me that all the problems had been sorted out and I can see him in the office. I was relieved that finally they realized that the so-called days off are to be paid as well. Well, as a problem he meant deducting my non-existent flight ticket from the 230 EUR salary when I told him I came here by coach. So he meant to say that he solved this problem: he investigated that I indeed came by coach. By that time, I decided to come home - I was just avoiding the moment, or sorry: I was looking for the right moment ... read more

It all started with me not having a salary for a week now. I've talked with the accountant here, we agreed to talk and meet on Sunday - he never showed up. In the meanwhile, the Slovakians had June as a whole month, worked through. NO ONE received a decent salary. They have the same contract as I do: 400 EUR/month, 48 hours a week, 6 day work per week. Meaning that we work 6 days and 8 hours and that one day is our rightful day off. All nine of the Slovaks have the very same contract, only that their flight tickets of 270 EUR will get deducted as the hotel said to cover the costs of transport. They should get 130 EUR for June. Some of them received 99 EUR, some got 185 EUR, ... read more

This is going to be a short post, it's just to update you guys with the latest information. The pictures are from the hotel and the coffee is the famous Greek one. Let's start with the fact that the doing the dishes really dries your hands. Everyone knows that but no one should experience it. It's not nice. I'm getting faster in washing the dishes and as the Slovak boy got a day off today, I did everything: even the big and the ceramic containers. They are really heavy and slippery. I finished with everything around 1pm and headed back to my room when the general manager stopped me to talk. From tomorrow, I will not wash the plates in the kitchen, I'll help out in the restaurant with the two girls: I'm gonna be a ... read more

Allow me to share with endless joy and four hours of experience to all of you, that since yesterday which was 3rd July - I work in the BAR! Where should I begin... I've already mentioned the girl with swollen knee - she went home on the 2nd July and the bar has been empty since. The other two waitresses were told to check on the bar from time to time if there's anyone wanting to have a drink but most of their attention focused on the restaurant - understandably. As a result, the guests and the waitresses never crossed each other's way... My she-boss had this delusional dream of me quickly doing some rooms in the morning, then go to the bar in the evening all smiling and happy. Two birds with one stone right? ... read more

We've come to another day off of mine, and today I decided to discover Skala. But first, let me tell you some things that happened recently. One of the girls is going home to Slovakia as her knee was swollen from something. Probably it was too much standing and running around on the job. Anyways, the general manager sent her home as she is unable to work. My lady-boss, the manager of the chambermaids suggested me to ask the manager to move me to the bar to replace the girl leaving. I am the only one from our cleaning team who speaks English - like, in sentences. However the she-boss would keep me for one or two rooms to clean besides the rooms. I don't think the role of maid-barista exists. I could definitely wave goodbye ... read more

It was a Friday afternoon when every normal Hungarian sighs with a relief that the weekend is here! It doesn't matter anymore that I'm working on the weekends as well, I know this before, I don't mind. But knowing that the Greek Gods truly do hate me... that actually hurts. I needed to move - as you might have already guessed it from the title of this post. Let's start from the beginning - shortly though. You already know my Slovakian colleagues. Well, three of them who sleep together in one room got into an argument and from now on they are not BFFs. Meaning that they cannot live under the same roof - one of them, the one that's feelings have been hurt: she needs to move. By the time I finished working, everything was ... read more

Yesterday I was thrilled to hear that I’ll have the day off today! As my lady-boss said: „Tomorrow Adriana sleep. S. (herself) sleep.” So, I planned a day trip to Argostoli, the capital of the island. I’ll go there by bus, I’ll take loads of pictures, walk around and enjoy the sun. It is pretty hard to keep a secret here or keep anything to yourself – for example that you’re not going to be in your room or in the hotel on your day off. One Slovakian girl heard it than at lunch time everyone asked where will I go. When I replied with the name of the above mentioned town, such looks were given in response as if I have said that on my free day I’ll swim all the way to America and ... read more
