This was a stop we did on the way back from the Philippines in 1999. We had about 22 hours to wait, so we decided to take the train and visit Tokyo for the evening. It was an impromptu visit, but gladly, we had a japanese friend, Minako, to help us!! We gave her a gift: a good size bottle of maple syrup. She really enjoyed it!! We took the train from the airport. One thing I noticed is how clean and well organized the country is. Culture fields are well cut and clean. When we arrived in Tokyo, the city starts abruptly with lots of buildings. It's very different from North American cities, where the suburbs stretch very far from around the city, (and not always pretty). In the city we visited the video game ... read more

Mount Slamet or Gunung Slamet is an active stratovolcano in Central Java, Indonesia. 3.432 meters above the sea level is the highest volcanic mount in central java, and second highest in java island. It is also one of Java's most active volcanos, with many eruptions recorded since the 18th century. It has a cluster of around three dozens of cinder cones on the lower southeast-northeast flanks and a single cinder cone on the western flank. The volcano is composed by two overlapping edifices. Four craters are found at the summit. the area of mount slamet comprises four forest areas, which are montane forest, hilly dipterocarp forest, ericeaous forest, Mt. This trip was for a wedding. We were based in Manila and had to go shopping a couple of times. It wasn't easy then to go too far, especially because we had to cross the whole congested city to go anywhere and that with the rainy season, some roads were difficult. In Manila we stayed in a middle class neighborhood. It was very comfortable, but we only had ac in one room, and temperature was well over 36 Celsius and 100% humidity all the time, so it was tough. In the city lots of slums, metal sheet "houses", but also very rich places, often side by side... which is a culture shock. Also, almost at every store in town, one or more armed guards. It's also a shock..but after a while you get use to it. ... read more

When I worked as a travel consultant, one of my favorite destinations to sell to honeymoon couples was the Maldives and Seychelles. When I visited the island of Maldives in 1999, the largest promotion of the Maldives was being run with a huge sign that read ""MALDIVES . . . The sunny side of Life;. This slogan has been Maldives tourism selling slogan for as long as I have known the island as a destination of choice. I cannot agree more with the saying, the white sands, the sun and the sound of the sea each morning and night is as tranquil as it gets to make life rosy! The dazzling blue waters has an almost spiritual side to it, I remember many couples did yoga right on the beach, there were many people meditating right ... read more

On the Road The plan leaving Siquijor was to hop across Negros Island and arrive at the capital city of Panay Island, Iloilo, where we’d then catch a 28 hour ferry boat crossing the northern Sulu Sea destined for Puerto Princessa, Palawan. Palawan is considered the final frontier of the Philippines. Most people fly to Palawan. For about $50 return flying is a good option. But we’re on a tight budget and boats are less than $50. That was the plan anyway. On Negros we made a brief stop at a cheap guesthouse run by an Australian man and his much younger Filipina wife. Down under he was in the cement business which had also taken over his place here. With a huge concrete wall meeting the ocean, concrete patio, concrete bungalows and concrete planters there ... read more
