Pulling into Vietnam was an experience in itself. We were to port in Ho Chi Minh city, formerly known as Saigon, which was further inland and required us to sail through the narrow rivers of the Mekong Delta. For an hour that morning our massive ship cruised along the waters, taking up the majority of the space except for a few fishing boats. Since the port was in a gated harbor, we could walk the twenty minutes to the downtown area or take the shuttle provided by SAS which left about every half hour. For those brave enough there was also the option of a motorbike, whose riders would take you into the city for a $1. Motorbikes and motorcycles were absolutely the popular mode of transportation in this city, outnumbering cars maybe 10 to ... read more

I natt skiltes vaare veier. Skilte? Hmm... Petteeeeeer?! Men rosa? Det ble han for det om. Jeg har lyst til aa skravle saa masse. Om Vietnam. Men jeg faar det ikke til. Det er saa masse aa si. Men neiggu om det kommer ... read more

I have never seen soo many motobikes in one city before in my life, there are literally millions of them everywhere. This makes crossing the road a unique and interesting challenge for first timers to the city. There is literally a constant stream of bikes so the only option if you want to cross is to step out into the traffic and hope for the best. The best metaphore I can give is to imagine the waters movement around a stone breaking the surface of a river, like the water the bikes literally flow around you as you creep to the other side and to saftey. If there is any solid objects like cars or buses your done for there is no where to run! Vietnam is definatley more commerce orientated that other SEA nations ... read more

In a city of 4.3 million motor cycles it will be no surprise to you that the roads are overflowing with chaotic activity! With traffic lights regulating only the very biggest on the big roads and the red light not strictly adhered to, crossing the roads can't be anything other than perilous... or so it would seem. On a tour to the Mekong delta yesterday out tour guide told us that there was in fact an art to road crossing. "Close your eys and pray to Budda," were his words of wisdom! To go by the advice would of course be to sign one's own death warrant. However perhaps there is a modicum of sense in the first part of the advice. Although not literally closing one's eyes, the answer seems to be to step ... read more

April 26 - 29 The bus ride was pretty crazy. It was just a local bus that stopped for anyone on the side of road. The driver drove super fast with his hand on the horn the whole way to HCMC. He had a sidekick that would yell at traffic and people just in case nobody heard the horn. This guy also would jump off the bus to determine if people on side of road where going to HCMC. The guesthouses are different here in that they are termed "minihotels" that are peoples homes. You basically enter and exit through the homeowners living room. In the evening I ran into Gill so we grabbed some dins and chatted. She was leaving for Dalat the next morning. When I was checking into Cu Chi tunnel tours ... read more

We checked into a hostel an stayed in for the rest of the night as we where on the top floor up 8 flights of stairs Lauren was not happy about the fact there was no lift in the hostel and had to walk up or down the stairs every time we decided to go out or come back. Hello All Well here we are in Saigon. It is soooo hot! We really noticed it when we got off the plane on Tusday night. We had a beaut trip over with Jetstar - managed to score seats near the exit door! Stretched the legs out and enjoyed! We thought it very Aussie when they served us meat pies with tomato sauce just before landing in Saigon - not your usual airline type meal! We were late arriving and caught up for ages waiting to go through immigration. It seems lots of aircraft arrive around the same time in the evening so there was a huge backlog. Anyway once through grabbed a taxi and whizzed into town and there were Adele and Craig sitting outisde the bar with a beer (not Craig) waiting for us! ... read more

Well we made it into Vietnam. BUT not with incident ! We got stung by our Hotel Owner in Cambodia with regard to our Vietnam Visa's. The bastard ripped us off and gave us a 15 day visa instead of a 30 day + the $hit bag visa he gave us cannot be extended inside the country, so we will only be able to go as far north as DaNang and then we will have to skip over into Laos travel up and fly then into Hanoi ! Pain in the arse but what can ya do ? Anyway, Vietnam is great, best place I have been so far. got to Saigon (HCMC) and are staying in a really nice guesthouse just on the outskirts of District 1.
