HO CHI MINH CITY - 25/03/07 to 27/03/07 We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City with a killer hangover after a big night out in Nha Trang and early flight. So for the first day, it's safe to say we didn't get up to much. The weather was not helping with a temperature of around 38 degrees and what felt like 200% humidity. We stayed in the backpackers district of HCMC which was close to some markets but far from the centre of town. The markets were not so pleasant for shopping. Although indoors, it was jammed packed with people and stuff, and no aircon or ventilation. We were quite disappointed with the quality of the shopping as it was all basically junk, even though we had been told differently by other tourists. We ventured ... read more

so yes, goodbye Cambodia, and hello Vietnam. The farewell to cambodia wasn't as difficult as the one from Koh Tao. Cambodia was a little more challenging, and a real wake up to the developing side of the world. One which is not so apparent in an Island paradise. many a beggar, children wanting to sell you 10 postcards for $1, and then reeling off more stats about Australia than i reckon i could have known. population, capital, national animals, slang sayings...quite impressive really, until you're hearing it for the 5th time in one day, and then speaking to the English tourists later and finding out they do the same for every country. These kids are just taught spiels of various languages to reel of at the tourists to get attention and $$. Anyway, they wear thin ... read more

1st Entry... Well we arrived at Saigon airport an hour later than planned due to the plane “not having all of the things that it needed to fly yet (from Sydney)”???. After collecting our baggage we steeled ourselves for the Saigon taxi-drivers onslaught only to be pleasantly surprised to find a counter from which one could purchase $US5 taxi vouchers to the city. We no sooner bought the voucher and we were being ushered, from an orderly queue, buy a uniformed lady into a taxi for our very busy 7km trip to the hotel area. We had a little problem reminding the taxi driver, he no English and we with even less Vietnamese, that “no, we won’t be giving you extra money for the trip”…I guess that he had to try. The 2 young professional ... read more

Hi all, So I've decide to tell all about Vietnam in one blog entry. I can't be bothered to write each entry individually. So here it is: On arrival In Saigon we went straight to our hotel which was right on the Mekong river. It had 26 floors, with the swimming pool on the roof. Tamara and I went to check out the view from the roof top which was trully amazing. The view stretched all along the river and the entire city. Soon after we went to bed as we were quite tired. We did not do a whole lot in Saigon as we only had a day there. There was however a rather scary moment where I lost my bankcard! Thankfully I had forgotten it in the ATM and I was able to ... read more

Ho Chi Minh City Asia » Vietnam » Saigon By Nessy and PeteMarch 22nd 2007 Saigon is a cool city, its a shame we only had a couple of nights here- and the days were spent out in the countryside. Its really lively and super trendy. We went to see the tunnels at Cuchi and some of the waterways where the mighty Mekong river disperses into the ocean. Cuchi Tunnels These tunnels are amazing. It took the country folk 20 odd years of war to make them the way they are now. When fighting, everyone lived underground where they had kitchens, sleeping quarters, mini hospitals and munitions factories. They've got all sorts of cunning tricks for staying underground and not giving away their position- l... read more

I decided to take a cooking class on my last day. If anyone is thinking of doing the same, it is well worth it. It is a change from the crazy shopping and site seeing. The cooking school is a bit out of the way from District 1, and most taxi drivers would have trouble getting there. The first time I went there to register and pay, the driver was circling for about 30 minutes around the area. He stopped about 5 times to get directions. The second time, when I went for my class, I saw the sign board for the cooking class and instructed the driver to follow the sign. He still had to stop and ask for direction. Normally, according to the staff at the cooking class, it cost 30,000dng to get ... read more

We arrived in Saigon at 8pm on Thursday after a 13 hour bus ride from Siem Reap. We were greeted off the bus by a local who carried my bags and led us through narrow alleyways to our hotel. After checking in, we walked around to find somewhere for dinner. You soon realise what a bustling city this is with narrow buildings, a population of 10 million and thousands of motorbikes filling the streets. We were up at 7am on Friday for a minibus tour of the city. We visited the Notre Dame Cathedral, Post Office, War Museum, Chinatown market, a Vietnamese Temple and a Chinese Temple before returning at 4pm. That evening, we checked out a few bars before going to a club. Saturday was spent walking around the local streets and included some DVD ... read more

Here I am alone in Saigon for the first time. PY has returned to Canada and I have 2 days before I set out to Singapore. Seeing that I have been around district 1 for over 5 days, I decided to have a change of scenery and go to Cholon, the Chinatown of Saigon. The experience became my most bitter/sweet experience. Bitter, because I got cheated and intimidated by the motorbike driver going there. Sweet, because I've met locals there that gave me hope that there is more to Vietnam than crazy tuk tuk, motorbike, taxi drivers and incessant haggling.... read more

We ended up going to Saigon by plane after not the trains were all booked up and neither Cat nor I could face another mammoth bus journey so it was a very civilised 1.5 hour flight down to Saigon and whilst on the plane we met 2 english girls who were also travelling around the world together. We joined together to get a taxi into the centre and headed for the Pham Ngu Lao area which is a bit like the Khao San area of Bangkok but a little less developed. 2 of us went of to find a hotel leaving the other 2 in a cafe with our bags. We soon realised that all the hotles were very tall and narrow so we were going to have to have a least 4 flights of stairs ... read more

Sport and the Scoundrel Saint Patrick's Day, 2007. Memories? A sickening last minute heart-breaking try by France against Scotland in Paris to deny the Irish a first rugby Grand Slam in over fifty years. On the same day the Irish cricket team was sending Pakistan out of the Cricket World Cup in the West Indies. At the same time my old alma mater, Saint Macartan's, Monaghan, was gearing up for a McGrory Cup Final with a chance to take a senior title for the first time in over a half a century. They went on to lose in injury time to a flukey score aganst Omagh CBS. Sport, in all it's forms, has a way of taking on a special meaning for the exile. I can watch a match in Ho Chi Minh or Bangalore ... read more
