Saigon. or is it Ho Chi Minh City? The answer is both. Saigon is generically used by all Vietnamese, although the official title is Ho Chi Minh City. Either way it is a place to behold. Just go and have a look on YouTube and search for Saigon Traffic to see proof. We were in Saigon for 4 days. In that time we saw the war museum, a collection of photograhs and artifacts documenting the war. Some of the most harrowing pictures you will ever see are housed in this collection, from the famous "Girl in the picture", a very small burned naked girl running from a napalm explosion, to a GI holding part of a corpse. I have never really studied the war before, but I know that a lot of people were against it ... read more

I started my Vietnam excursion from Chau Doc in Mekong Delta. I didn't do too much on the first day as my mood wasn't brilliant. I was still frustrated about the taxi scam on the Cambodian side and then there were all these people wanting more money from me. What I mean is that I encountered the thing that annoys me most in Vietnam many times already during the first hours. That is that every time when you bargain about something and eventually reach the solution and do the thing (most often the motorbike drive) the person who has been serving you asks for more money. It seems that they agree to a low price only to get the deal and then think that they can freely ask for more. Anyway, that makes me so angry ... read more

Good Morning Viet Nam!! Ho Chi Min City is a massive place with a population of 11.5 million ppl. Unfortunatly it is the only stop that I will be making in Vietnam because my visa runs out on the 5th of May. Ohh well there were many good times had here! The majority of the trip was spent in suit shops, markets and of course my wonderful a/c room with T.V. and a fridge for the beers. I purchased 2 dinner/ sport jackets, a full suit and 3 shirts that came with a tie! My purchases also included 30 DVD's 6 box sets of T.V. series and shirts. I had a blast bargining with the ladies and hitting the small eateries along the way. I visited the war museum and the old Communist building of ... read more

Rebonjour a tous!

If someone were to ask what my mood was today, I'd have to say sombre. It is our first day in HCMC and we've been to the Reunification Palace where the tanks invaded on 1975. after this we went to the War Remnants Museum which we had been told is quite graphic. They weren't kidding. The first room we went into was of photographers work during the war - many of whom died for their trade. images of not only the soldiers but the families that were effected and had to flee from their homes. There was also Robert Capa's last role of film on display, a photographer that stood on a land mine whilst photographing the scenes around him. After this, which I thought was quite harrowing we went into another exhibit with even ... read more

HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM - (April 2007) Sat 21st - Tues 24th April - (Saigon) I set off from Phnom Pehn (Cambodia) by bus in the morning heading to Saigon in Vietnam, or to use the official Vietnamese Government name for the city, Ho Chi Minh City. There’s not much to say about the journey itself as it was fairly uneventful except for the condition of the road to the border which was dreadful being full of pot holes every few meters and not being surfaced. However, there were no problems at the border, unlike previous border crossings on this trip, although I still had my passport checked to see if I had the right stamps and visa in about 6 different times over a distance of about 10m - It must be a way ... read more

Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City as it is now known, proved to be a great city for us as we had a very enjoyable 3 days here. On the history side of things we have visited the Cu Chi Tunnels and the War Remnants Museum. The Ch Chi Tunnels was very interesting and something I had been looking forward to ever since our round the world trip had been planned. Having researched the tunnels in the past it was great to actually be here and see how ingenious the Vietnamese really were. The tunnel network became legendary during the 1960's, for its use by the Viet Cong. The tunnel system stretches from Saigon to the Cambodian border, and there was over 250km of tunnels. To think that they lived in these tunnels for weeks, ... read more

On the basis of our previous 12 hour bus journeys I was expecting another night of uncomfort and torment as I boarded the bus for Sai Gon in Nha Trang. It appeared my fears were being quickly realised when immediately the woman in front of me fully reclined her seat into my legs. "Excuse me, I don't mind you reclining your seat, so long as the seat next to you is left upright - my legs dont fit in the space" I explained. Whether she misunderstood or was simply pure evil I will never know, but she then fully reclined the empty(!) seat next to her, fully boxing me in. Luckily there were only about 10 people on the entire bus, so I immediately moved. With two seats to myself this turned out to be ... read more

11th Entry..... We caught a nice little Pacific Airlines flight (the Ryan Air of Vietnam) from Da Nang to Saigon (for $US35 !), another 60 minute journey. Again easy to book on-line, lovely staff and we actually had jet engines this time...hey, hey. We have already blogged about Saigon so not too much to write. We decided to save the Mekong Delta till when we come back to Vietnam. We were a bit tired by then and after the Ha Long bay overnight trip we decided that to justify visiting these lovely spots we reckon that one would benefit from spending 2 or 3 nights in each place, at least. During the 2 day/1 overnight trips a lot of the time is spent travelling to get there, which if you are staying for a while is ... read more
