After almost 22 hours of travel time, I landed on my first point of arrival in south east asia. Never "Truly" knew what jet lag was until now. This is also my first arrival to a still communist country. Ho Chi Minh or "Saigon" is the largest and most modern city in Vietnam, but the communist feeling was felt soon after arrivial. The city has about 8 million population, and and I think there are about 8 million vespas. :) The Windsor Plaza hotel looked nice on the outside and very spacious inside. People are very friendly here, but still there are the elements of Policing and "KGB" influence that feels a bit strange. For example, I was told that direct contact with Vietnamese people were restricted to certain hours?!! ... read more

Today we boarded a public bus that would take us to Phnom Penh, capital city of Cambodia. Before the bus left I ate beef pho soup for breakfast, a dish that Vietnam is famous for and I felt I shouldn't leave without trying. (It wasn't bad, either!) The difference in wealth between Vietnam and Cambodia is clear as soon as you cross the border. Many families live out here in simple shacks propped up by the side of the road. On arrival in Vietnam we are decided to go to the firing range - as this is one of the cheapest places in the world to get your hands on any weapon you wish to fire. And I do mean any weapon. On arrival we were shown to a table and given a menu - ... read more

If Hanoi was bad for the swarms of beeping mopeds then Saigon is twice as bad and the heat doesn't help the concentration as you edge across the road letting the young lads and lassies dodge you and keeping an eye out for anything big, like a truck or a bus. You can see where the money is at and this feels more like the capital than it's northern brother. The influence of the west is much more prominent here ane everything seems newer, brighter and more affluent. On the negative side, HCMC has a lot more hawkers selling books, postcards and other tourist paraphanelia which they push on you even as you sit eating a meal inside a restaurant. This was very annoying and you wonder why the owners tolerate letting these people constantly ... read more

Our last night in Bangkok was a tough one. Molly had food poisoning and was up for most of the night. Needless to say our goal was to get her back on her feet as soon as possible. Thankfully the flight was only one hour to Ho Chi Minh City so we quickly found our hotel and took it easy for the rest of the day. The next afternoon we felt up to taking a walk so we checked out some of the sights nearby. The amount of motorbikes on the Vietnam streets is staggering. It makes for an adventure when you need to cross the road. We basically grab eachother and take a step into the teaming river of beeps and honks as they flow around us until we're safely on the other side ... read more

Leaving the real land of smiles Before heading into Vietnam, we had to contend with one last, early morning tug of war at Phnom Penh bus station (we were the rope). No matter, the same rucksacks that hindered our progress to the public bus, as Tuk Tuk drivers and various vendors tugged in demand of our dollars, made useful battering rams where several smiling "No thank you"s clearly were not going to be enough. Nonetheless, Cambodia had been amazing. Ten days had not been enough. We were saddened to be leaving behind the most incredible, friendliest, smiley people we'd ever met (blog: ). It took a good 4 hours to reach the border with Vietnam and a further couple to get to Saigon...I mean Ho Chi Minh. It was easy to forget the name change, given ... read more

I would like to say our trip into north Vietnam was great, that it was fantastically organized that the people were great and we loved it all.. i would like to say that... but im unfortunately it would be one huge fat lie !! we managed to get out visas in Vientiane probably the most chilled out capital city in the world and booked on to the (now nickednamed) hell bus.. which as it turned out was 27 hours of yep u guessed it.. hell. it started off ok but every so often we would stop and pick up more people untill to everyones dismay we realized it was overbooked and people had to sit in the isle, and as there was no air con it quickly became a sauna.. anyway after randomly sitting in ... read more

With such a long trip, things can't go on perfectly forever. Especialy during a time when you are racing around to try to pack as much fun into a short amount of time as possible. It's bound to happen that people get sick, timetables change, and unavoidable things can happen with transportation. All you can do is roll with the punches and hope to get back on track soon. In Nha Trang is when things finally began to catch up. At first we were having a blast. Since we didn't have time to make it to an island, this was our beach bum time. During the day we would pick out chairs laid out with long pillows, get a round of beers, and wait for the food to come to us. Women covered from head to ... read more
