I had another pretty long journey down to Koh Tao - 27 hours door to door from Siem Reap which involved a pretty scary share taxi journey from Siem Reap to the border - the whole way I was planning how I would get to a hospital in bangkok when we crashed and how i would contact home and the people i knew in the area who would be able to come and help me - but as it amzingly happenned i didnt need it and i got to the border safely, crossed and instantly saw how different thailand is from where i had been for the past 6 weeks - it seemed positively developed! Motorbike took me to the bus station and i got there with 5 minutes to spare so grabbed a bag ... read more

I have got incredibly lazy and my blog has kind of suffered as a result so I am sorry in advance that this is going to be a bit of a mammoth entry. Onarrival in Phnom Penh I headed to the Lakeside to try and find a hostel that Cat had recommended - but no-one had heard of it but I kept thinking that they were lying to me because they wanted me to stay at their hostel (however I got it wrong and they were actually telling the truth - whoops!) I stayed at the lazy fish which is right on the waterfront with beautiful views over the lake and a free pool table so I got in a bit of practice! Phnom Penh was quite nice, not as developed as Vietnam but more ... read more

One thing that I had not seen last time I was in Vietnam was the Mekong Delta so I decided that I would do a 2 day trip through the delta into Cambodia. Day one it was a mixed group with people on 1, 2 and 3 day trips all on the same bus, but luckily it was still quite a small group. It took about 3 hours to get to the river where we got on to a ferry type boat and headed to our first stop - a coconut candy factory! The day was basically made up of a series of stops at bizarre places, the next stop was a cafe where they had one bee hive and a kid on roller skates came out with a massive python round his neck. I decided ... read more

We ended up going to Saigon by plane after not the trains were all booked up and neither Cat nor I could face another mammoth bus journey so it was a very civilised 1.5 hour flight down to Saigon and whilst on the plane we met 2 english girls who were also travelling around the world together. We joined together to get a taxi into the centre and headed for the Pham Ngu Lao area which is a bit like the Khao San area of Bangkok but a little less developed. 2 of us went of to find a hotel leaving the other 2 in a cafe with our bags. We soon realised that all the hotles were very tall and narrow so we were going to have to have a least 4 flights of stairs ... read more

The weekend that I was arriving into Vietnam was Tet - the Vietnamese new year which was why the bus had been so busy. This meant that all the tailors were shutting down and nothing was operating as it should be - which was probably just as well because there were less places to go shopping! It was really nice to be able to be here then though because there was quite an excitable atmosphere and the people were all really busy getting the last minute preparations which seems to be these tiny orange trees, yellow blossom trees and lots of flowers to it is all very pretty - and generally multiples of these would be ferried around on their motorbikes. I arrived into Hoi An and I recognised the hotel that I had stayed at ... read more

TYhe journey - Vientiane, Laos to Danang, Vietnam. Estimated time of arrival (according to the man at the bus station) - 5pm Wednesday Actual time of arrival - 1am Thursday I got picked up from my hotel at 4.30pm on Tuesday afternoon to start my journey to Danang and taken to the bus station where there seemed to be some confusion whether I was able to get on the bus or not but they eventually conceded and let my put bag on board. It seemed that we wouldn’t be leaving for another hour or so but the bus was very stuffy so I had to hang around in the bus terminal (I was the only falang around). Eventually at 7.30pm we left and the Lao certainly know how to make the most of the space. I ... read more

The trip down to Vientiane was another saengthaw but we didn’t break the record for the number of people in it this time. Vientiane is a funny city - it is the capital but it didn’t seem at all together and there didn’t seem to be a particular centre, it was all broken pavements, open sewers and road works and there would be one bar on the road, another restaurant on the next street - no atmosphere I thought. I wasn’t there for long but did the Lonely Planet walking tour on the first day where I went to see the Laos version of the arc de triomphe (sp?) which had a very funny plaque describing itself as a monster! There are lots of temples and I also went to the morning market which was a ... read more

The trip to Vang Vieng was by local bus but unfortunately the locals don’t travel so well so I put my earphones in and tried to ignore it all as I watched the beautiful scenery! I had been recommended to stay at the Riverside Bungalows and I am so glad that I did - it was a really beautiful setting just outside of town and you had individual bungalows with verandas and nice views. I immediately met some nice English girls - Georgina and Hannah who I was with for the whole time I was in Vang Vieng and we decided to go tubing the next day. Tubing is basically where you float down the river in a tractor tyres inner tube - I don’t know who thought it up but it is a lot of ... read more

I was staying at the Viradesa GH in Luang Prabang in the only dorm in the city for $2 a night! However the room was a little like a dungeon though so when I arrived I headed straight out again to explore the town. It was evening so the night market was in full swing. All the items for sale are laid out down the road and they varied from t-shirts, to art work to light shades and really nice duvet sets - but I refrained from buying the duvet sets - they looked a little too heavy! The next day I set out to explore the sights of Luang Prabang, which started very nicely with a trip to the Joma Bakery and a chocolate croissant for breakfast. Luang Prabang is a really nice town and ... read more

Next stop after the Gibbon Experience was Luang Prabang, however to get there from Huay Xai you had to get on a boat for two days down the Mekong. We had bought our boat tickets from an agency in the town to make sure we got on the boat but when we went to pick the tickets up we found that she merely gave us some money to go and buy the tickets from the ticket office, needless to say the money she gave us back was less than that which we had given her - we felt a bit duped. There were no problems getting the tickets but we had to have our passports checked and the immigration man noticed that Helen’s visa ran out in 3 days time and she wasn’t going to be ... read more
