Arriving just after darkness fell, we found the bus station in Krabi in darkness. It seemed that our bus was the last one of the day to arrive. It was a little disconcerting but we were able to find transport to our guest house. It seems that the bus station is usually a lively place with places to grab a snack and plenty of tuk tuks and taxis to help you move on. Rooms@Krabi Guesthouse turned out to be an excellent choice. It's not luxury accommodation but it has everything you need and the staff are super friendly. They were always willing to help and if their English wasn't good enough to answer your query, they could always find someone else. It was such a refreshing change. We enjoyed it so much that we stayed one ... read more

Always know it's time to move on when we start recognising the dogs, the one with one ear up and one down, the one bounding along happily with only one back leg, the one which prompted Sam to sing a little song 'Do your.... hang low, tralala' whenever she saw it..... It was a boy, needless to say. ATMs in Thailand - TRY NOT TO USE THEM, no security issues it seems, but there is a humongous charge of over 5% for each transaction, I paid 220b for taking out 4000b, even though my Nationwide account has free transactions abroad. Better to bring cash, large USD or any kind of GBP and go to the money changers, loads of these, they print you off a slip to show how much you are going to get, no ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Railay February 16th 2017

The glossy brochure for paradise probably resembles Railay. Stranded on the nub of a peninsula and cut off by impenetrable mountainous jungle, no roads lead in or out. Wooden long-tail boats ferry visitors along the Andaman coast, around the towering limestone headlands, and into the placid bay where the cobalt waters lap gently at the postcard crescent of powdered sugar sand. Black-faced spectacled langur and thieving macaque monkeys forage in the small strip of trees between the beach and the sheer cliffs towering over the beach. Seeping minerals have streaked the white cliffs red and black, forming stalagmites, like the wax drippings from a candle in a wine bottle, at the cliffs’ base. Wind, water, and time have rounded the tree-topped crags at the edge of the sea into knobs and towers, reminiscent of Chinese scrolls ... read more

Nothing too much to report from yesterday. We went to the beach, stopping on the way for breakfast at the Cafe With No Toilet (careful advance planning needed), but it was quite a cloudy day with some rain. Not a huge problem, just hid under an umbrella (Sam) and had a leg massage (me). We had to content ourselves with spotting sunburn and bad haircuts and watching the turf wars among the rogue beachmat vendors. There was a group of young Americans already on the beach when we got there at 9.30, with a Thai guy who was their guide, playing really loud and annoying music through his Bluetooth speaker. We had our toes redone at hut 15 too, they looked not too confident when we asked for flowers but they were excellent, very thorough and ... read more

Last night the lovely people at Palmview resort were so pleased to announce that they now had red and white wine. Unfortunately it was undrinkable. On a par with that found in Luang Praang last year. Also the tempura vegetables Sam had been looking forward to were a complete disappointmen, being infiltrated inexplicably with chicken nuggets, so we decided eating elsewhere was sensible. Armed with our torches for coming back we went to find a minimarket to stock up on snacks and water and went back to the lovely pizza restaurant. Pizza, 2 nights in a row, my son-in-law Jon would be most impressed! We walked back in the dark along the path through the palms, such a great shortcut, a bit spooky when you hear a scooter coming. Got back to the room and we ... read more

We slept well enough, once an annoying woman in a nearby hut had stopped shrieking and yapping. We left our fans on, directed at the beds and it wasn't uncomfortable, although the bedding arrangement was a bit strange. Flowery sheets and pillow cases and then a kind of stretchy towelling thing on top. Do we lie on it or get under it? I used my cotton sleeping bag instead. By morning it was actually quite cool. No animal noises, just a few birds in the morning, rather disappointing. Today was our canoe trip. We waited in reception after breakfast (the tea and coffee was disappointing, you are given a flask of hot water and a few instant sachets to make it yourself) and some other guests were waiting with all their bags. Slightly worryingly, when the ... read more

We only have one whole day here, what to do? The retired elephant was fully booked for both of the day's sessions ( poor bugger, must think oh no, not another group wanting to wash me...), so we looked at the other options. Neither of us fancied walking for hours and going to the lake was a very long day, 6am - 7pm, couldn't face another one of those so soon. So we decided to do canoeing on the river The next day. Easy peasy, you don't have to paddle, the guide does it all for you. Picked up at the resort, 1 1/2 hours on the river, depending on the current. We paid 800b each, couldn't be bothered to trek round the so-called village and get a couple of quid off. We also booked our ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Pha-Ngan February 12th 2017

Koh Pha Ngan is known the world around for the infamous Full Moon Party held monthly on Haad Rin on the south eastern beach of the island. I had no desire to go to this party nor was it the correct time of the month anyways as the moon was in a new quarter. Good timing on my part. The ferry from Koh Samui to Koh Pha Ngan cost me $200b after shopping around a bit. On the boat I was given a map of the island and decided to stay on the north west coast on Haad Yao. After taking a share taxi to the beach I stumbled into a dive shop that also had accommodation for $400b. I booked the room and also a two dive trip to Sail Rock the following day for ... read more

We've spent the last four days in Koh Samui, unfortunately for us it rained on two of those days, which is annoying. When we first got to the island we found that they offered indoor skydiving, so we thought why not! That was an interesting experience, it's A LOT harder than it looks, I thought I'd be floating like an elegant butterfly, turns out I am more like an old helium balloon flapping around in the wind. It was really fun but gave me a sore back. They also offered Go Karting which Mikey did. Something we've both wanted to do for a while is Scuba Dive, and we found the perfect trip which we booked for our second day on the island. We were picked up from our hotel nice and early and taken to ... read more

Today was a rest day, thankfully. Of course we were awake and perky by 7am, out for breakfast at 8.30 and the street was practically deserted, most businesses not open. We found one place for breakfast on the other side of the main road and had to do the Death Dash again, not as bad as it is at night. American breakfast 150b, great coffee and fruit juice, ok scrambled eggs and the scariest sausages EVER! Not like the photo in the menu, these were bright yellow hotdoggy things, like a sort of dog's toy. I think it was chicken rather than pork but who knows what bit of the chicken. Feet and beaks, probably! Wifi was good and the best thing was that we had a great view of the main road and could do ... read more
