We are now on the island of Ko Yao Noi. After six weeks on Ko Lanta it was time for a change. The journey here consisted of a four hour mini bus ride interrupted by a ride on the small car ferry to take us to the mainland then onto the pier at Krabi via Ao Nang. Unfortunately as we arrived in the mainland it began to rain and soon became a torrential downpour, flooding the roads. We bagan to dread the boat ride over to the island but miraculously 15 mins before we arrived at the pier it stopped and the sun came out. A huge troop of monkeys came from the mangroves and greeted us at the pier as our mini bus pulled up. The boat was an old large wooden long tail boat ... read more

As we have already traveled to many parts of Thailand, the goal for this trip isn't to sightsee, but just to pick a spot to hang out in for a couple of months and experience daily life with the kids. But which island? Ko Phangan? Too much partying. Ko Phi Phi? Too overrun and expensive. Ko Samui? Too much sleaze. Phuket Island? No, just no! Ko Kradan or Bulon Leh? Nice, but not enough infrastructure for staying long term with small kids. We need access to medical in case something goes wrong, and a minimart for essentials - diapers, wipes, snacks... It had been ten years since we'd last been on Ko Lanta. We had good memories of it being at that right level of development. Not overrun by large concrete hotels, but with enough infrastructure. ... read more

With just one more day left, it's time to wrap up my blogs on Ko Lanta. I've already written a blog about the first ten days at Somewhere Else Bungalows, and another blog about our three weeks "flashpacking" at Good Days Resort at the other end of the beach during Christmas. Our final few weeks were spent back at the northern end of the beach, this time staying at Best House. It's located right behind Somewhere Else Bungalows so we could still go there every morning to eat our breakfast on a platform overlooking the beach. It was nice to be back. While it was handy to have a pool at Good Days Resort, it was nicer to be back at the best part of the beach. Location, location, location! My parents also moved into a ... read more

Hit and Run, six countries, one month, two girls! We have a month off school for winter break. A whole month to explore Asia. After looking at a lot of different routes and working out the best one financially, Val and I decided to go to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, The Philippines, Taiwan and Japan. Unfortunately the Irish had friends from home coming for part of the holiday so couldn't join us so they spent two weeks island hoping in Thailand. Our first stop was Krabi. We were only there a night before getting a boat to Ko Phi Phi where we were staying for five nights. Once we were checked in to our hotel on Phi Phi island we went to the beach. It was the 16th of January and we were in the sea, it ... read more

After a day zooming around the island on the truck tuk we felt we'd seen a good proportion of the it. However as our truck tuk driver had taken us mainly to the well known tourist places we had noticed other interesting looking places that we would have liked to investigate more. Motor bikes are super cheap to rent on most Thai islands and are a popular way to get around. Ko Lanta is no exception. Bikes are less than £4 a day The roads tend to be in a bad condition, large potholes , mud patches and gravel. Stan's an experienced bike rider so I put my faith in his skills. Unlike most tourists, however, who tend to ride around in skimpy clothing or even swimwear I put on long trousers and a fleece. I've ... read more

Recently, my husband Archie and I decided to visit a beautiful Koh Yao Noi island. As much as we love our home in Chiang Mai, a periodic change of scenery can be a great source of inspiration and motivation. After searching through various Koh Yao Noi hotels, we ended up finding a private villa at Coastal Escapethat suited us quite nicely. It's located close to popular destinations, but there is some distance from the massive tourism that sometimes overruns other Thai islands. I feel like it's important to maintain a healthy work-life balance, and these islands ended up being just what we needed. Figuring out how to get to Koh Yao Noi was an easy, painless process. The island is located between Phuket and Krabi, two popular travel destinations in Thailand. Afte... read more

Smashing it! Back in Phuket once again and ready for a fitness kick! I’ve been to Chalong, Phuket a number of times and it’s a great way to train and get fit. This time I stayed for longer, getting stuck in and making a change! Some things had changed since my last visit - a few more tattoo parlours, and some more healthy eating restaurants along the street. The classics are still there - Reggae Bar and Tony's! It's a street with everything you need and maybe some of what you don't need but want ie reggae bar! Laying by the pool between workouts was pretty awesome for a few days! Then there was a four day rain storm which was fun! I had a frog take home in my shorts that were on the line ... read more

We're not used to spending so long in one place but this time we decided to try it instead of rushing around from place to place, even county to country. Also the main reasons is that Sharon and Scott are here with the two children. The area of Ko Lanta we are staying in is beautiful in its own way and very lively so we never get time to be bored. Having said that after over a month here we began to feel a bit claustrophobic and wanted to see more of the island. We debated whether to get a bike or not, I wasn't too keen. Then we came up with the idea to rent a tuk truck and driver for all six of us. A tuk truck is a kind of open back truck ... read more

10th Jan: I was up fairly early as I was leaving Ao Nang today. I wish the weather had been better and that I could have explored the area some more, but I guess that wasn't too be on this trip. I was taking the boat to Ko Lanta and my pick-up was arranged for 9:40 am. That came and went and I was still sitting there. The people who were getting the minivan to Ko Lanta were picked up at 10 am, and I was still sitting there. I was coming to regret my decision to take the boat. The poor guys on reception called the travel company a few times and kept telling me that they were on their way. Finally, well after ten the driver turned up. There were a few people already ... read more

Travel with little kids requires a lot more "stuff" than when we travelled before kids. It's amazing how someone so small can require twice as much packing space as someone four times their size, and the smaller they are, the more they need. Anyone who has travelled with a baby can attest to that! Of course, they need their own little sets of clothes, and lots of them. The smaller they are, the bigger the mess they make at mealtimes. Hence the need for exponentially more clothing. And then there's the diapers. In the BK (before kids) days, we travelled with just one large backpack and one small backpack each. We brought along the very same ones on this trip but added to it a huge wheelie suitcase full of cold-weather clothing for South Africa. The ... read more
