We're not used to spending so long in one place but this time we decided to try it instead of rushing around from place to place, even county to country.
Also the main reasons is that Sharon and Scott are here with the two children.
The area of Ko Lanta we are staying in is beautiful in its own way and very lively so we never get time to be bored. Having said that after over a month here we began to feel a bit claustrophobic and wanted to see more of the island.
We debated whether to get a bike or not, I wasn't too keen. Then we came up with the idea to rent a tuk truck and driver for all six of us. A tuk truck is a kind of open back truck with a roof and seats along each side.
The kids loved looking out of the open sides as we zoomed through the county side ,stopping of at several bays for photographs or a swim.
The first stop we made was at Klong Khong. Kyla and Jake were fascinated to watch someone with a very long pole knocking coconuts from the tree top. They landed with
a massive thud. Reminded me to never walk under a coconut tree. Wouldn't want one of those to drop on my head!
Next stop was Kantiang bay, said to be the best beach on the island. The first thing we noticed was a bush full of colourful butterflies, right by the car park, we spent several minutes watching them.
The bay was pretty, backed with a collection of rustic beach bars. There was very little shade though so after a chocolate shake and a quick dip in the sea we were off again.
After negotiating steep hills and sharp bends we arrived at Bamboo Bay. This was by far the best beach, beautiful sweeping curve of sand and very little development. . We had another dip in the ocean then lunch in a beach restaurant which took way to long to be served. They are so efficient near Long Beach, where we are staying, that we forgot how the old style Thai is. Slow or very slow! To be honest who can blame them in this heat?
Anyway lunch eaten, finally and with two very bored children we went and found our tuk truck driver and woke him up.
He'd strung a hammock in between two tuk trucks and was deep in dreamland.
We backtracked along the road stopping at a view point we'd seen on the way up to take a photo of Bamboo Bay.
Then onto the official view point overlooking the opposite coast for more photos. Poor Jake had fallen asleep by this point, practically standing up. Bless him.
Next stop was the old town .We dropped Sharon and co off at a playground and we took a stroll along the main street.
It was lined with quaint wooden houses some built over the waterfront on stilts.
We all met up again at the playground which had definitely seen better days and to make things worse, leaves were being swept up and burned right in the middle of the play equipment. Not much health and safety going on here!
After a hasty retreat we made our way via a different route across the island back to our accommodation on Long Beach. It was fast approaching four o clock and time for us all to cool down in the sea.
