Ban Rotary Sai Village This blog is for Mike. Joo is the masseuse I told you about in an earlier blog. She trained at Wat Po courtesy of a friendly German couple who agreed to sponsor her short term training after the Tsunami. She had a business in Ban Bang Niang but it was destroyed by the wave. Her brother is still alive, but otherwise her only family is the close friends she has who also survived the wave. Joo is not the docile, quiet Thai woman characteristic of the South Thailand villages. She is plump with bright eyes, boisterous, loud and brash. I swear if she offers to call her 71 year old patron to be my boyfriend one more time I’ll lose it! Every time I see her she threatens to call him and ... read more

The Population of Thailand’s Dogs are Depressed. One of them is dying on the doorstep. One of them is rabid and foaming at the mouth, one of them scares the shit out of me and keeps trying to steal food. One of them looks like a cross between a scarecrow and a mule and most of them are bleeding, wounded or demented. Then there are the pets…there seems to be no distinction between the animals chosen to be pets or those that run free as “village dogs”. Qun Dam, Pee Kop’s little black pup and “Biak” a retriever type mutt that is a stupid as a shoe horn seem to be well cared for, bathed on occasion and even fed the leftovers. While a nearly identical retriever pup is literally beaten off with a stick if ... read more

Hey everybody! I have a new story for you. When I first arrived in Bangkok we stayed at a hotel for one night called the Novotel Hotel. It is very big and fancy. It is very stunning. The rooms were very organized; the courtyard is packed with lots of details from natures like real trees, gardens, and a tiny river with a bridge running through foyer. It has a big desk and a silver lotus flower on top. The flower was big. The room was a nice quiet space with one nice bed and a window through the bathroom which was very clean. The next morning we had breakfast in the restaurant. I had two croissants; very yummy, one glass of punch and some bacon and cereal with milk. The milk sort of tastes the same. ... read more

I notice the things that are really important here. It’s the stripping away of all the excess, all the unnecessary that reveals the core of things underneath. I need communication, I need sleep, I need stimulation. I don’t miss the television, the culture of want or the pace of life at home. I do miss some things though. The intensity of relationships for example. It’s difficult to reach that same level here with the extreme language and culture barriers. But still, most times it is a welcome relief from the constant management of relations. Simple things are bets. I am sitting on my front stoop watching Mae Cee make Som Tam in a mortar and pestle. It’s beautiful to watch the way she makes food. It’s simple, ingredients pounded together and served with grated green papaya. ... read more

Miles was finally hungry this evening. I asked him if he wanted eggs as I thought they might be healthy and offer some strength. He said yes and I turned around with two in my hand. Mae Cee was standing at my doorway motioning for me to give her the eggs. I wasn’t sure what to do in response as I hadn’t verbalized Miles’ want for eggs, or spoken a word, looked in the direction of her home across the street or…. It threw me. She just knew…I handed her the eggs and asked if she would cook them for Miles’ as he was sick. She nodded her head and went back across the street. I am still a bit shaken from the experience. She returned a few minutes later with the eggs fried nicely and ... read more

Noah would be so proud of the way the people here are able to tolerate the rains. It started at about 11am and hasn’t stopped since. This is rain …real rain…rain that doesn’t stop…ever. Gee I sure am pleased the apartment is built on stilts…..and we only lost two shoes today to the torrent pouring over the sidewalks… It has probably rained a good 36 inches in the last 12 hours…enough to flood the back wash area, cause all the dogs in the neighborhood to find their way under the apartments in the village and force me to move the motocyc to higher ground. We are of course assuming that nothing will float away during the night and Noah won’t be making a float-by appearance in the morning. AND…the rain wreaked havoc on my Wednesday market ... read more

Her name is Joo. It means pearl in Thai. She lost everything in the tsunami except her hope and her smile. I found her after a day out with the kids. Marrin was being a snot, Miles antagonizing her at every turn and both of them driving me absolutely nuts. I had to talk to Marrin twice about sulking because she couldn’t have a third ice cream/chip/pop treat and Miles was blundering oblivious to every item he knocked off a stall table or off a shop shelf. I kept driving past Soi Cee (our road) on purpose because I was too cranky to get off the motocyc and the wind felt good in my ears. I couldn’t hear the kids bickering behind me. We kept riding past our village and into the next survivor housing village ... read more

So the “girls” and I are on a mission to find a market not flooded out/rained in or otherwise evacuated for natural disasters. There is a significant lack of market stall shopping going on here due to the weather. We have found the market shops in the night food market to carry a few neat things…Miles particularity enjoys the plastic toys we would purchase at the dollar store. Marrin finds the trinkets super attractive and keeps asking to buy one plastic purse or another. I can’t wait for dryer weather and BIG markets! I would love to find a mask for my bedroom wall at home. So far my purchases have been household items…sigh, how boring! I did buy a couple of sarongs and a mop….does that count? I would love to find some VCDs (DVDs) ... read more

Its raining again, has been all day and most of the night. I am so glad it’s not cold though…Miles and I rode in it for some time coming back from Ban Muang. Malie stayed at the orphanage all day and had some peace from her brother. I am avoiding my Thai studies so far this time. Kat (a volunteer from Singapore) has picked up pieces of Thai that compliment what I know and we can usually figure things out between us. Nan has given up waiting for us to learn enough Thai to figure out what he is saying, so he tends to just babble on without waiting for our brains to translate it. He is so much fun! I think he is sweet on Kat, but no one is willing to point it out. ... read more
